turnovers in a season?

Our opponents always seem to run them back for points too.

I remember multiple turnovers during the coot streak of wins early in Dabo’s first few seasons as head coach. In fact, we probably should have won several of those games if not for the turnovers! If I remember correctly, I think Steve Spurrier even said he couldn’t believe the gifted turnovers.

Turnovers per game and national rank

2023 1.6 T82nd
2022 1.5 T81st
2021 1.3 T54th
2020 1.3 T45th
2019 1.1 16th
2018 1.2 T32st
2017 1.2 T33rd
2016 2.0 T106th
2015 1.8 T96th
2014 1.4 T34th
2013 2.0 T88th
2012 1.7 T57th
2011 1.7 T52nd
2010 1.8 T65th
2009 1.7 T54th

My take away from this is WOW how good were those 2016 and 2015 teams despite the turnovers.

What’s not included in this is how the turnovers are happening. Those 2015 and 2016 teams were about throwing the deep 50/50 balls and having dudes make a play. Watson’s INT number through six his sophomore year was astronomical, but he settled in later though still giving up INTs.

To add a comparison, here are the PPG for some of those seasons:

2023: 25.4 74th
2022: 33.1 24th
2021: 24.4 85th *Cheez-it Bowl*
2020: 43 4th *Playoff*
2019: 44.9 4th *Runner up*
2018: 44 4th *National Champion*
2017: 31.2 40th *Playoff*
2016: 37.8 17th *National Champion*
2015: 37.5 16th *Runner up*
2014: 27.3 70th *Russel Athletic Bowl*
2013: 38 12th *Orange Bowl*
2012: 41 6th *Chick-fil-A Bowl*

If you’re going to turn the ball over a lot, you better be able to score points at will. We currently do not possess that ability, but possess the second lowest PPG average in a decade, third lowest since 2010 when we averaged 21.3 PPG.

If we want to start winning at a high level again, we need to start scoring almost 40ppg, the average of 2015-2020, and stop with the basic fundamental turnovers. Sure, I’ll give up INTs if we are throwing down field and still averaging 40ppg. But we aren’t. We funble snaps and handoffs and average 25ppg.

Interesting that the national average seems to be coming down

Maybe in relation to rule changes that have reduced the average number of plays in a game?

The difference is the teams of the 14-19 years were good enough to overcome turnovers but this team has not been able to do that yet.
