The cheatin' beat goes on in Knoxville......

Jan 31, 2015, 8:40 AM

How short a time ago was it when the coaches at all three main men's sports at Tennessee were simultaneously under NCAA investigation?? Football, basketball and baseball. Doesn't seem very long--mainly cuz it wasn't

But an interesting phenomenon is getting ready to occur this afternoon. Disgraced former UT basketball coach Bruce Pearl returns to Knoxville in his new position as the HC at Auburn. (see link)
http://www.knoxnews.com/govolsxtra/basketball/timeline-relive-bruce-pearls-rise-and-fall-at-tennessee_73981786

The interesting part of this "profligate homecoming" is not just the crocodile tears surely to be shed by Cousin Brucie and the pi$$-orange colored vol fans.....No. The interesting part is that current UT basketball coach Donnie Tyndall is facing an NCAA investigation and likely accompanying sanctions himself--this time not because of sins committed in the mountains of Tennesse. Donnie came to Knoxville from the lowlands of Southern Mississippi....and So.Miss. is currently facing the wrath of the NCAA. Players have already been suspended and will likely be dismissed for infractions that occurred under Tyndal's tenure. And the NCAA has the power to sanction Tyndal even though he's moved on....Tennessee obviously exercised what the SEC refers to as "due diligence in hiring".

As I've posted frequently in the past, the NCAA needs to set up a branch office in Birmingham....once they get finished in chapelhole

Vols' Donnie Tyndall on the spot in Southern Miss probe
David Climer, dclimer@tennessean.com 11:34 p.m. CST January 22, 2015
Veterans Classic Tennesse vs Virginia Commonwealth

In response to rules violations on Donnie Tyndall's watch, Southern Miss has imposed a postseason ban on its basketball program.

Et tu, UT?

Although the two campuses are almost 500 miles apart, the goings-on in Hattiesburg, Miss., are hitting close to home in Knoxville. Any NCAA sanctions against Southern Miss could — and should — impact Tyndall at Tennessee.

Tyndall's contract with the Vols allows the school to fire him for cause if he is found to have committed an NCAA Level I or Level II violation at another program. Various media reports have indicated the alleged wrongdoing at Southern Miss involved improper financial aid to two players, which would constitute a Level I or Level II violation.

Will it come to that? It depends on what the NCAA investigation uncovers and any sanctions that could be handed down. If there are major penalties — probation, longer postseason ban and/or loss of scholarships — imposed against Southern Miss because of improprieties under Tyndall, UT should remove him as coach.

Donnie Tyndall's old school imposes postseason ban

In Southern Miss' situation, I'm not sure a self-imposed postseason ban is going to resonate with the NCAA. The Golden Eagles are 5-12 and winless in Conference USA this season. A postseason ban appears moot.

UT, on the other hand, is 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the SEC. The Vols have won three SEC road games. A team that was predicted to finish near the bottom of the SEC standings is currently sitting in second place. UT has won eight of its last nine games.

When it comes to Vols basketball, it's always something. This program is subject to some serious mood swings.

After two decades of largely inconsequential basketball, Bruce Pearl pumped life into the UT program, coaching the Vols to a No. 1 national ranking in 2008 and taking the 2010 team to the Elite Eight. But Pearl ultimately flamed out and was fired in 2011 after lying during an NCAA investigation.

Last year, Cuonzo Martin's team took flight at the end of the season and won three NCAA Tournament games. Shortly thereafter, Martin bolted for California.

Contract lets UT fire Tyndall with cause if allegations true

Enter Tyndall, who arrived in Knoxville with considerable baggage. When he was coach at Morehead State in 2010, that program was placed on two years probation for an impermissible relationship with a booster. If the NCAA determines he is a repeat offender, UT would be compelled to take corrective action.

Just because a head coach might not have direct involvement in rules violations, that doesn't take him off the hook. In August 2013, the NCAA revised its enforcement policy to place more responsibility on head coaches to maintain an air of compliance in their programs.

Tyndall has said repeatedly he is not allowed to answer questions about the investigation at Southern Miss.

"All I can say is I've cooperated 100 percent and if I need to, I will continue to do that," Tyndall told reporters after UT's 66-62 victory at South Carolina on Tuesday night. "That's all I can say on that matter."

Vols' Donnie Tyndall on NCAA probe: 'Very confident'

In announcing the self-imposed postseason ban, Southern Miss officials acknowledged the NCAA investigation centers on the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. Those are the two seasons Tyndall served as coach of the Golden Eagles before accepting the UT job in April 2014.

In a prepared statement, Southern Miss athletics director Bill McGillis said the postseason ban was "a painful but necessary decision based on information gathered during the review process" by the university.

For the moment, UT is on hold. The university released this statement:

"It's not appropriate for us to comment on decisions by other institutions, nor do we have any other updates to provide."

These days, though, the updates are being transported across state lines.

Didn't Mike Bellamy post a pic of the money he was handed when he came to Clemson?

I wonder if that had anything to do with not playing much?

no rules - just a stupid act by an immature kid. That in no way has anything to do with this topic of cheating and lying by a head coach.

Well Bruce jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire in going to AU, the most sanctioned team in all of College Sports (at least they are in FB).
