What will be the last straw for the portal?

Oct 13, 2023, 1:13 AM

When will Dabo change his approach? Just simply being out of playoff contention (maybe)?

If you look at the most likely teams to make the CFP this year, they all brought in numerous transfers.

The portal is also something that has incredibly helped Brownell. Even though they have not postseason success, the regular seasons have been pretty good. It is something that works for Brownell. And you don’t see any misconduct by any of the transfers really ever at Clemson. You can control it.

Wouldn’t Clemson be a major spot for top transfers? The brand has been set and it’s not going anywhere. I feel like opening up to at least the best players could bring us back.

I'm all for using the portal in football to offset..

the exfil from it but not limited to that purpose. That being said, if CDS ever does relax his postion of "portal abstinence is best"; we will most likely face an uphill battle. We've put a huge target on our backs for negative recruiting as it relates to the portal. Take any casually informed player in the portal and it's reasonable to expect a hesitation to consider Clemson as possible destination. Doubtful it was intentional but he has all but ensured that our portal intake will remain minimal. Even with a 180° turn from our current position of abstinence to a program that welcomes transfers and embraces the portal.
Basketball is a completely different animal-Brownell has leaned far too heavily on the TP; most likely cause it's less work and he hates the bare bones of hs recruiting. But he was 'this close to getting Zion, then somebody got to Zion' and from there the situation Brownelled up in his face—"

Who you you propose that we kick off the team to free up a spot for a portal player?

Holden Caspersen and Philip Florenzo were apparently the 2 competing for the last scholarship before the season.

Yeah, at least one of these guys to bring in a top receiver that would actually impact the team.

Tired of being the Mickey Mouse Playhouse with some of these players. It’s a football team when it comes down to it, and Dabo can keep his values and everything aligned all while using the portal. Because it’s for the betterment of your team.

I think Dabo is just not up for the job.

I hate to say it.
He clearly is incapable of running a football program.

Maybe ESPN was right the whole time.
D+ hire!!!
Maybe even a F!!!!

That’s what we get for going cheap and hiring a guy who’s never even been a coordinator.

Oh well…

You think we still recruit the same if Dabo left right now?

Wouldn’t want to see the turnover from that. We’d have 5 losing seasons in a row.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does not matter.

The guy has never had a clue how to win anything.

Shoulda never hired him in the first place.
We’d be so much better off now.

I can think of two statements that MAY be true..

1). Dabo and his staff revolutionized the sport with awesome quarterbacks and wr play that was a blueprint for playoff appearances and national championships.

NIL and Transfer Portal happens

2). Being a former walk on himself, and a man who hates quitters and believes that in life, there are no handouts,….Dabo Swinney is at odds with the current state of the sport not just in opinion, but it goes against everything he believes as a human, coach/player, and the way he operates his program.

Dabo is certainly the same man he has always been. He is a winner at the highest level and even a better man. But the current state of the sport is not made for a man like Dabo.

I’m not sure Dabo can give in to things that are completely against what he believes life and football are all about. And that’s admirable.

The only problem is he gets paid 11-12 million dollars to be the man that makes playoff appearances, and wins championships.

Something has to give…

This disingenuous idiotic #### is getting so #### old, Dabos offered several kids in the portal it didn’t work out. He also didn’t expect Ruke,TD,XT to all come back which didn’t leave room for extra scholarships. Y’all honestly believe Dabo is dumb enough not to use a tool there to help his team? What he’s not going to do is replace HS recruiting with it which nobody should, and he’s not going to run guys he’s committed to off. #### is annoying asf how many of our fans believe every dumb ### narrative the media pushes

The issue isn't that he hasn't offered a couple kids. The issue is that he took a hard stance against it from the start, set a tone, and then was late to the party in trying to establish a plan to use it. When the new portal rules came into effect, other programs immediately began forming committees and establishing plans on the portal (and NIL). We watched the train pass by and now we're trying to get a grip on the caboose before it's gone entirely.

In any business (which is what CFB is) you have to have the ability to pivot and adapt to your market. You can lament that college football is changing as a fan, but when you are in the business of college football you have to accept it and move with the times. The other option is to stagnate while everyone else is changing and get left behind.

I think Dabo and this program has built up enough credibility with the recent success to recover and get with the program. I just hope he's willing to do it.

For Clemson sake Im still more concerned about NIL than I am the portal

While it would be nice to pick up actual decent players in the portal who are going to contribute and not just be excuses to say we’ve used the portal… I’m more concerned about Clemson being able to keep up with programs that can for millions and millions of dollars to NIL deals We are Clemson will not/can not

You may be right about the NIL, but we won't know that until we start using the portal to our best advantage.

Take a look at our LB depth chart and I

Oct 13, 2023, 9:01 AM

think you have your answer. Once Carter and Trotter leave we will be quite thin with experience and no depth. I know sammy brown is coming in but I don't see how you can justify not bringing in some experience there.
Of course we could have said the same with wide receiver the past couple years and OL year before last.

If your program cannot stand a few transfers without disrupting the "culture", then it was not a very strong culture to begin with.
