Well folks, 19 years ago today I was (long and personal)

In Florence, SC getting ready to watch MNF and turn in early when my sister called me from Greenville. She said you need to get up here, dad is in ER and they don't think he's going to make it. I honestly didn't believe it. No way he could die. He was really healthy for 69. He was supposed to play golf earlier that day. But I headed to the truck to drive to Greenville. Just as I was getting ready to pull out, I heard what can only be described as a "still, small voice;" "go get your suit."
Driving I began to consider the possibility he might die. I hadn't spoken to him that week. We always talked, especially in football season. But I was slammed running my own business, and we'd just gotten spanked by Georgia 30-0 nine days earlier, so things fell through the cracks. He'd just called his 403rd Tiger football game 2 days earlier, ironically against Furman, and it was an uneventful game. I'd catch up later that week.
When I arrived in Greenville he was in emergency surgery. The surgeon came out periodically to give us updates as hours passed. About the third time, he had actually realized who he was operating on. He was a Clemson fan. He told us his heart is perfectly healthy. He smoked for 50 years so that kind of surprised us, but as he explained things through his own emotions, he told us the aneurysm that had ruptured in his heart was in a place it could not be repaired. He was going to die. We were all just in shock.
Me, my sister and mom headed over to his condo after he passed. His alarm was set and none of us knew the code, so I climbed into the attic and ripped out the speakers. I called Tim Bourret, informed him, and asked if the school could release the news. Then I called my fellow long time spotter Sac Bagley, who just passed in the last few weeks. Then down the list, calls I never thought about making. Everyone was in disbelief.
After 3 hours on the phone I took a break, flipped on WCCP to see if the news was getting out. Dan Scott's old show was on, and it was wall-to-wall Jim. I was overwhelmed. I called Dan in a commercial break to thank him and he put me on the air. The response was just amazing, how many lives he had touched. Not just as "The Voice," but as the man. As we watched on TV crowds of all of you laying flowers at the Rock on the hill, person after person, were contacted by I have no idea how many of you, read the tributes in the media, and just a compilation of thousands began by someone who later gave them to us, it looked like a dictionary it was so thick, all from fans and friends. It carried us through that week.
Clemson was amazing. I met several times with Billy D as we worked through how we'd handle things. It just kept getting larger and larger. The outpouring of love. We had to move the visitation from Mackey Mortuary to the President's Box at the stadium to handle the crowd. Done. I asked that Tim Bourret be allowed to call the next game as dad's long time partner. Done. We went from Bob Fulton speaking at the funeral to calling a series in the MTSU game. Done, and, touchdown. Everything we asked for and needed. Done.
The week was a whirlwind. I didn't really grieve until after that MTSU game on which I was part of the pregame and post-game radio broadcast. As we signed off with George Jones "Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes," the release finally came.
Every year, this time, those memories flood back. The regrets of not getting to speak with him one last time. That he never got to hear me as a preacher, as that all happened afterwards. Never saw me married. He's missed so much he would have loved, including what has happened with Clemson football. But, those regrets are short lived. He led as full a life as anyone could ask. Did exactly what he was meant to do until the day he passed. Hung out with his heroes, but remained down to earth.
I have a unique joy. I can still hear his voice anytime I want to. Just have to go to YouTube and he's there, doing what he loved. To all of us, he was "The Voice." But to us, me and Terri, he was dad. We did pretty well in that department.
Thanks for all the love and appreciation expressed here, regularly. I can tell you first hand, he never got over how much Clemson loved him.
Now I'm going fishing. Y'all have a great day!

his last, and finding out 3 days later he had passed and couldn't believe it. I will always remember some of his play calls and the way he said it: - Rodney sets them down in the I, takes out... _ The kick is up, the kick iiiissss gooood! - The Ricochet Rabbit bounces off a would be tackler! And so many more. Hard to believe it's been 19 years. He's still missed.

They don't go under center or use the I much anymore, but when they do, that's how I call it, with JP in mind.

of the Clemson Family tree and it is pretty cool who your Dad is, too.
Thanks for sharing some incredible sentiments.
My Dad died unexpectedly 30 years ago and I still miss him nearly every day. A true Clemson Gentleman.
Your Dad was a much beloved link between my Dad & I. We’d be in the basement in NC as I was a little kid, working on projects, fixing things, etc - listening to Tiger Basketball and sometimes football, too. Your Dad would paint the picture so perfectly, I also saw myself being there and promising myself that someday I would be there in person to see what Jim Phillips was so enticingly describing.
By the Grace of God - was in the middle of all of it for six amazing college years.

All who have come after him are just standing in for awhile. And, remember as well, he might not have been here physically for all those things you mentioned at the end, but he was watching from afar. The pride of a Father in a Son for a job well done never dies. You will see him again, just as I will see my Mom and Dad on the other side.
The Circle Will Be Unbroken.

I can assure you that you will never find a Tiger fan who will say a single negative thing about your dad. He was admired even more so that coach Swinney…. And that’s saying something.
Several years ago when I moved to the NC mountains I was able to pick up on radio your dads Clemson show in certain areas. On the evenings of his show I would drive around the high altitude areas until I could hear the broadcast. Eventually I found an area where the signal was ver good so I bought the land and built my home on that spot. I swear to the validity of this post.
He will never be replaced … in a lot of ways!

Time flies by. Surpised 19 years went by so fast. Your words are very eloquent. I met your dad by chance a couple times at road games. He was a very nice man and a person I would love to have talked to at length about Clemson. Every time I hear a clip of him I realize how wonderful he was and how blessed all Clemson fans were to hear him. He was the best. Prayers sent to you and all his family.

I had no idea who your father was. It has NEVER been the same. I was watching YouTube and fell down the rabbit hole of old 80s games when Danny was the coach and these were my first memories of Clemson football as a child. Your dads voice calling games and saying Touchdown brought tears to my eyes. The Treadwell kicks. The kick is up,..the kick is…Goooooood! He was the best. I miss him so much.

Before nearly every Clemson game was on TV, Jim would keep us connected to every play and the emotion of the game. When I couldn't make it to a home game or for away games, I would have an earmuff AM/FM radio set on my head (with the little antenna sticking up) while cutting grass or working around the house. I will never forget that voice, a gift to every Clemson fan...back in the day.

Stripper fan, I didn’t know know Jim was your dad. I always enjoyed listening to your dad who made me feel like I was there at the game. Your dad was a part of my dove shoots for years via radio. I know you miss your dad. We old school fans miss him too. However, you and I know that we will see him again. Enjoy your fishing, even if it’s strippers (more of a Bass man myself . Dad, but to hear him call a game was basically listening to a Master at work.
Yesterday I was literally thinking about what it would have been like to hear him call these last 2 National Championship games. I am sure I’m not the only one who has had this thought.
That’s how great and special he was to us, that fans would still imagine hearing his voice in those great moments?
Thank you for sharing this very personal story with us. I was wiping away tears and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

I had the opportunity to speak with your dad at a golf tournament in Anderson in the 1990's. I found him kind, considerate, and genuine. He didn't have to spend any time with me. But, he did. One of my great memories.

When I first moved to Atlanta in 93, many Saturdays I would be coaching my kids football games and couldn't go to Clemson. After my kid's games I would have to drive up 85 for about 30 minutes to pick up the end of the Clemson game on the radio. I would be driving and listening as hard as I could through the static for your Dad's voice to break through. Win or lose he was the one you wanted to hear.
Still miss him! Thanks for the reminder. Go Tigers!

I believe he had heard every sermon you have delivered and probably even helped you with a few and he is looking down at you right now and proud of the man, the preacher and the husband that you became. RIP Jim. We all miss you.

Your dad is sorely missed! He will always be the voice of Clemson Sports...
He was a Clemson man, just as you are now...
Jim Phillips would love to have seen what Dabo did to the football program.
Also, died right before the resurgence of the time of Clemson Basketball under what Oliver Purnell did at Clemson.
I hope you and your family are well. Please keep Jim's memory alive with your strong and respected opinions on this site ...
God bless and prayers...

Your Dads voice was a gift of my childhood. When we tuned in on the radio, we knew we found the right station as soon as we heard his voice. If anyone found the role God meant for them, he did. No one will ever replace that golden voice and how much it meant to so many Clemson fans. Thanks for sharing what I know is a bittersweet memory.

Thanks Striper. I’m 57. He will always be the voice of the Tigers to me. Every big win in basketball and football in the 70s and 80s before we were on TV all the time was heard through his voice. As a kid I would pretend he was calling my name as I scored the winning TD for the Tigers in my front yard.

I would drive 70 miles to get a station, buy lunch, sit in car and listen to him. Or was it listen to Clemson football.
I think it was listen to him.
Then i would drive home.

and sharing with us!!!
I’ve stated on here before that if my Dad and I weren’t in Clemson on a fall Saturday, we were wading the Russellville Flats catching a few meals . . . at daybreak, we’d part ways scouting for the most productive areas . . . as 1pm approached, I’d make my way towards Dad as he always had the transistor in his top pocket with the antenna fully extended . . . your Dad spent those afternoons with us . . . he is as much a part of our love of Clemson as the hills she sits on.
Just as much as fried fish, grits w/ sliced tomatoes and “light” bread w/ cane patch syrup is comfort food to me . . . Your Dad’s voice is the comfort to my soul.
Again . . . Thanks for sharing . . . and a warm Go Tigers!!!!!!!
(My Dad graduated this earth on Oct 8, 2013 . . . he was 81 yrs young.)

your dad does the play by on, I feel like I've connected with an old friend, even though I never had the pleasure of meeting him. He was great as the voice of The Tigers, but I have never heard of anything but praise for the man he was, personally. God bless you and your family.

To greet the team upon their arrival at GSP. Lo and behold, we missed the team. Well, wasn’t gonna waste a trip to the airport without getting a drink. Walked into the bar and there sat Jim Phillips. He waved me over and we sat there and talked for quite awhile, enjoying our drinks and a smoke. Got the pics. What a great time we had. ❤️

I was at that game and remember the absolute shock I felt the next week. Your dad was a part of countless Tiger families' lives. His absence left a void so large that Tiger radio is still struggling to find their identity.

All the great calls:
When I was at home listening to your dad call the 79 ND game (There's alot of orange in South Bend)...I can still remember where I was in our house, afraid to move because I didn't want to jinx anything...
Treadwell's kick in Athens...."the spot, the kick, its up and itssss gooood" One of the few games we didn't go to.
Buckner Jams, Buckner Jams
But this gives me chills......I know your dad was smiling in Heaven when this happened... https://youtu.be/qcSi_x7-7Mw

My favorite call of his is from that Notre Dame game

Billy Lott's TD run. The staccato delivery with his voice perfectly lined up with Lott's steps as he hit the yard lines. It is an absolutely perfect play by play call. That game was one of the highlights of his career.

...Lott at the 10, the five....TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!
Just amazing I can still hear his voice call that play in my head as clearly as the day I heard it live when I was eight years old. Profound impact.
That too was my favorite sequence....it just rolls beautifully

He and Dean Smith actually became friends in the strangest way. For a long time dad smoked Courtside in basketball, but of course that changed. When it did, at halftime. Dad would head for the tunnel as quickly as possible, lol, and leave things to Tim. Dean was a chain smoker. He'd leave the halftime adjustments to assistant Bill Guthridge and also head to puff a couple. For years wherever they played they'd talk the whole halftime about everything but basketball getting their nicotine fix ?

I know it hurts that those last few days deviated from the norm for you guys & you didn't get to speak to him like you normally did. But based on what most of us normally see from you on here (& willing to bet anyone who's met you in person can vouch too; plus knowing you're involved in the ministry), that Mr. Phillips did pretty well outside of the broadcast booth.
Remember being a freshman @ Clemson when left these earthly bonds. The halftime tribute that the school did during the MTSU game after his passing was beautiful.

the band spelling "Jim." My favorite part is still Bob Fulton calling that series on the radio. All the fans in front of the booth didn't even watch the TD drive. They had their radios on watching Bob call a Clemson game. He hadn't called a game in 9 years and was nervous as heck, but he nailed it. He and dad were such good friends

Never knew you were The Voices son. That is amazing tribute to your Dad. You obviously loved each other very much, and I’m very sure he knew that. I’m in a place near your Dads age when passed. I wish my kids called more, but they do have their own lives. Thankful and joyful for every day! Go Tigers!

Your Dad is the Clemson Goat

He was the best hire Frank Howard ever made & the best thing to ever come out of Ohio ever!
Just think he could have stayed at Kent State or ended up at Ohio State, but God had plan for his life that would change Clemson forever!
No way Clemson is Clemson without him.
I was born in November of 1967, he was all I ever knew as the voice of Clemson!

Truth is your Dad was responsible for helping put Clemson on

Truth is your Dad was responsible for helping put Clemson on the map, he framed Clemson so well with his voice, warmth and love being the greatest Interpreter of all things Clemson in the most professional and productive way possible, his life to many of us was Clemson.
I can’t imagine how incredible of a father and leader he was to you and your family. He was so loved by most of us to the point we were convinced he was our family too.
When I think of Clemson I hear your dads gift in my head calling a Clemson play or always greeting us and signing off like he’d be back in a moment.
Jim Philips should be in the ring of honor as the best to ever do it, so much so that no one will ever be good enough to be the voice of Clemson!
One day we will all get another shot to tell him how much we appreciated him. Can’t wait to see the joy on his face as he narrates our entrance into Heaven, wouldn’t that be incredible!

Back in the 70's , we went to every home game. But not every away game. My uncle and I listened in on many away games from his man cave. I was his bartender. Jim Phillips "The Voice" made those games sound like you were there. Great memories from THE BEST in the business.
