We ran 15 times for 42 yards and were down 17-0 and 27-7

Oct 21, 2013, 1:10 PM

in the first half.

How can anyone say we we ran the ball "pretty well" and "abandoned the run too early?"

Offensively, we didn't do anything particularly well including running the football.

I disagree...

Oct 21, 2013, 1:11 PM

we turned the ball over fairly well

we threw into triple coverage awesomely well too

along with missing open receivers and whiffing on tackles

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

we made loud noises well too

Oct 21, 2013, 1:13 PM

just not a record

Tajh did a good job missing wide open receivers ..***

Well when you run it one time on first down every 3 possessions they won't look that good. When a team is rushing 4 guys and playing coverage you keep running the ball and make them play the run. You don't simply heave it more hoping for a different result.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you run it 15 times and gain 42 yards do you

Oct 21, 2013, 1:17 PM

simply run it more and hope for a different result. And we don't have a home run hitter that could possibly pop a long run if given the ball enough.

We aren't going to beat a good team simply running the football. Especially when we are down by 3 scores. The coaches know that from watching practice and games.

Re: When you run it 15 times and gain 42 yards do you

Oct 21, 2013, 1:22 PM

2.8 ypc....Problem is, we would run for 5, pass for a 1st, run for a 1st then pas, pass, pass, punt....then do it all over again.....

We didn't run the ball enough....

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have to keep at least trying to run.

Oct 21, 2013, 1:14 PM

If not, they drop everyone back like they did in this game. Boyd got a few 15+ yard runs because everyone was in coverage. We needed to exploit that more.

Down 17-7 is no time to abandon the run regardless of the YPC we are realizing on the field.

I'm no coach, this just just my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We ran it 15 times in the 1st half and 26 times in the 2nd.

Oct 21, 2013, 1:21 PM

We didn't abandon the run, but it was obvious we weren't going to catch them doing that most of the time.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. But, people shouldn't point to YPC for the game

Oct 21, 2013, 1:31 PM

and pretend that we ran the ball well when it mattered.

Our rushing yards per carry were skewed by our success running in the second half after the game was over. We could not consistently run the ball in the first half and we were turning it over and having to play catchup.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Will we play with

Oct 21, 2013, 1:16 PM

Until they can prove someone other than Boyd can gain yardage on the ground opposing defenses are going ignore it and play the pass. Kind of like Bud Foster did in Blacksburg a few years back. Stacked the box and dared Proctor to throw. Everyone else followed suit. Just the opposite now.

Re: We ran 15 times for 42 yards and were down 17-0 and 27-7

Oct 21, 2013, 1:21 PM

That's about 3 ypc. That's what you want in the run game. We only ran it 15 times in the first half. You're proving our point.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

3 yards per carry will end in a punt.

Oct 21, 2013, 1:23 PM

Is this a joke?

Re: 3 yards per carry will end in a punt.

Oct 21, 2013, 1:25 PM

Yeah beacuse we never go for and pick up 4th and 1?....you must be the one kidding...

And you're assuming it's 3 straight runs every time. When you mix in passes with the running game you're gonna pick up that 1 yard. running the ball 3 ypc will open up the middle as the LB's cheat in.

We didn't run the ball enough. Once or twice per drive isn't going to do it. McDowell had 5.5 ypc and only 11 carries all game. FAIL

Re: 3 yards per carry is what you want???????

Oct 21, 2013, 1:28 PM

Mixed in with a passing game yes. You assume we'd end with 3 ypc. You have build on the run game to open up other facets of your offense. That in turn will open up the run even more when passing the ball becomes more successfull.

I'm not going to argue with people who don't understand football...

This year FSU's 5* on D played like 5* and we made way too many mistakes.

Re: We ran 15 times for 42 yards and were down 17-0 and 27-7

Oct 21, 2013, 1:44 PM

Throwing the ball didn't work well either, but we kept it up.

Perhaps we should have gone with the strategy Cumberland used all those decades ago and just started punting on first down.

If you become one dimensional, you take whatever chance you might have and throw it out the window. See the orange bowl for example. We abandoned the run during that game after the fumble and that pathetic mountaineer defense clamped down for the rest of the game.
