I read an article that said Clemson has the 10th largest fanbase.

Dec 14, 2012, 3:53 AM

While I do believe the coots outnumber us in South Carolina, I also believe Clemson reaches out more nationally.

and it's only getting better.

Especially with distance ed growing, I know of one graduate program that reaches internationally.

had people coming up asking me if my cap was a Clemson hat almost every day that I wore my last year's grey pinstripe Nike cap with the Paw Logo on it.

In 2002 I met a girl from Germany when I lived in Atlanta, who had a gold charm on her necklace of our Paw Logo and she had no idea of Clemson. Said she just liked the design.

given the difference in size of the two schools. Yet, I wondered if our national exposure over a long number of years via bowl games against nationally prominent teams, the national championship and even the renown of both Frank Howard and Danny Ford were contributing factors. If so, then we're speaking of a long period of time wherein the interest and/or attraction to Clemson would span two or three generations, and, hence, the numbers indicated. I believe our academic programs would enter into the picture, even considering those of S.C., some of which are nationally prominent, also.

(old and unwanted) for a project we were doing with the children. A guy brought in one with Gamecock logos all over it. I told him we could not accept it. Small children would see that and be influenced. He said "Oh no, I think it's some kind of school or something." HA! But everyone here knows Clemson's Tiger paw!

My brother was in Hawaii recently wearing his Clemson t-shirt. A number of natives approached him saying how they loved the Tigers and watched them religiously on tv.

I had a similar experience in Hawaii.

Several folks asked if I went to Clemson or was just wearing the shirt. Gladly I said I attended.

Dec 14, 2012, 8:10 AM

Bobby Hartin show, tons of South Carolina junk in every store, stickers on tons of cars.

If there has been a statistical study it must have been done tracking grads.

Also, I travel and never see either school represented anywhere else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't doubt more stickers and flags...

Dec 14, 2012, 8:19 AM

but I believe you're seeing a lot of band wagon fans who haven't been around until, say, the past four years?

Clemson has a much more steady following. Seriously think back to 7-8 years ago, it was an embarrassment to fly a SCar flag. Now that they are winning, their fans are vocal about it because they've been in the closet so long. Doesn't mean there are less Clemson fans in an area, just means SCar's bandwagon is full for now. Granted this is all IMO (no hard numbers to back it up), but I base it off of my observations over the past decade.

I lived in Charleston '89-'95 and don't remember seeing any chicken stuff back then! Believe me, I'd remember - for I nearly puke every time I see anything connected to them. When things return to normal, that stuff will disappear. I type this in a Clemson sweatshirt in the state cesspool... uhm, Columbia.

We have a more recognizable brand.

That doesn't mean we have a larger fanbase.

The Tiger Paw was a stroke of advertising brilliance.

When you see this you think CLEMSON!

Notice the Copyright Symbol too!

Just in my small town in Florida alone there are two or three different schools at all different levels that have some take on the Clemson logo. Don't worry I double checked to make sure none of them are using the "clef" (just kidding--sort of).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

England, Scotland, Hawaii-Clemson is known.

Dec 14, 2012, 8:28 AM

My first trip to Nottingham England I was sitting in a local restraurant and someone came up to me and said go Tigers (Had a Paw shirt on). Then in the airport hotel in London I had two South Carolina undergraduates come up to me. They were really glad to see someone from Clemson that far away from home. They were headed to Spain to study for a semester. I also had folks come up to me in at the Hilo Hawaii waterfalls and ask about Clemson. They had a friend that graduated from CU so I let them put on my jacket and text a pic to their friend. You can go through most any airport in the US and have someone comment that they like the Tigers. My friends from Wisconsin love us.

Got on a tour bus in Edinburgh Scotland to take a tour up to Loche Nest and there was a Clemson graduate on the bus. Sooo nice to see CU everywhere.

Dec 14, 2012, 9:05 AM [ in reply to England, Scotland, Hawaii-Clemson is known. ]

Also ran into a Clemson graduate/former soccer star on the beach in California one year. His young son knew all about the tigers and was so excited seeing someone wearing the paw. We definitely have a national presence from my experience. I think we have a farther reach than the coots because our grads are more likely to branch out all over the country after school. And as anyone who knows a Clemson grad will tell you, we LOVE Clemson and LOVE to talk about it (my Wofford grad gf might say a little too much).

I don't know which article you are referring to. However, I think the NY Times had an article about schools and teams with national followings. Clemson was in the top ten. So, it doesn't matter what the people in Charleston think. Its about NATIONAL recognition and NATIONAL following. Essentially, its about fans who for some reason pick a school outside their area to root for. Clemson is up for whatever reason.

There's quite a Clemson crowd up here in the Boston Area. I drive by a house in Winchester proudly displaying TWO Clemson Flags.
