Hiring Riley was great, and much needed, but we will need some continuity with him. If he leaves in a year or two, we won’t benefit much from him.

I am not convinced that Goodwin and Conn are the answers at DC. Our defense underachieved despite tons of future NFL talent. If we want an elite defense, which we need if we want to win another national championship, we will probably need another DC who is proven at this level.

Finally, we have to use the portal. Elite teams are using it to acquire difference-makers, while we sit back and do nothing. It’s impossible to overcome that with Dabo’s current strategy.

So keeping Riley for more than a year or two, plus a top notch DC, plus using the transfer portal is the only way I see us having a legitimate chance at another title.

I disagree on several points. I think Goodwin will grow into a fine DC. This past year Breesee was incapacitated for much of the year while MM was on cruise control. And our defensive backs had to be juggles due to injury. I can't blame any of that on Goodwin.

I think Riley will stay for more than 2 years. If he does as well as I expect him to do here, he will be in great demand, but I think he will want to wait for an excellent opportunity to open up. Plus lots of people here are focusing on what we can get from him, but I think part of the reason he came here is that he wants to run a program like Dabo's and he came to learn how. We have paid the money and managed to hang on the co-ordinators before so I see no reason that we cannot again. I think we get at least 3 years, maybe more - depending on what programs come a calling.

Finally, I don't think we HAVE to use the portal. If we continue to recruit well and use our NIL money to keep athletes in our program, I think we can compete, especially in a 12 team CFP. QBs seem to be the most impactful of transfers and I hope our problems there are over for the foreseeable future. WR is the other transfer position and we need to recruit better there, but we can do that.

And again, the CFP (and getting into it) is going to change quite a bit going to the 12 team format.
