We are 1 player away from a Natty…
Dec 17, 2021, 9:33 PM

This is in no way a negative message towards anyone but we are a baller at QB away from winning another Natty…we were this year and we will be next year…I dont really care who it is or how it happens but it’s that’s simple…I actually hope it’s DJ as I supported him all year and would live to see him go off next year, but that’s a huge leap from a few months ago…if it’s Cade then fine, but that’s a huge leap in 9 months time and a big ask…if it’s someone else then also fine…seems to me with all of the good QB’s entering the portal we should go after at least one that’s has playing experience and is mobile…it’s simple math…the more you have that are capable and compete the better odds you have that one of them will get the job done … and we are that close!!!
Anyway, just a fans opinion!!!

If we could just play for the Natty next season, that alone would change recruits minds about our new coaching staff, and with that being the case of continuing to recruit top shelf talent, DJ should have only one chance to prove that playing QB at the college level isn't to big for him. with just one outing like any game that we've had this season with him at QB, Dabo, and staff must make the call to sit DJ, period!!! IMO, our FB program is bigger than having to risk playing any player that will be the cause of holding it down!!!

Wehave a chance to be very good-but I don't think we will have the depth to be a play off team.

I worry less about Clemson (Dabo in charge) than I do College football in general. Dabo will get good recruits and he did quite well in ‘15 and ‘16 with good but less than stellar recruiting classes.

Without commenting whether it was one player or not, we were close in our losses this year. We could have easily made the playoffs with a little luck or something.

Re: We are 1 player away from a Natty… Lamar Jackson

It would have taken Lamar Jackson to make up for the poor WR play, circumstantially unfortunate OL play, and RB injuries to have been the QB to get us to CFP.
Neither T.Lawrence (who will be a better NFL QB than L.Jackson) nor D.Watson (already proven as a better NFL QB ... when he's not in trouble ... than L.Jackson) could have made up for our glaring offense's deficiencies in 2021.
L.Jackson did it all nearly on his own; T.Lawrence and D.Watson maximized the abilities of the teammates. If the teammates on the Offense are (again for various circumstances) not good enough to be 'made better' by a great QB, then the athletic freak type QB would have been our only possible ticker to CFP in 2021.

Yes they absolutely could and denying it is crazy. All of the names you mentioned are top 3 QBs and 1st round NFL talent. DJ this year was ranked 120 out of 126 and dead last for passers passing over 250 attempts. According to advanced stats DJ costs the team an average of -.6 points per pass attempt. He's so awful he's the reason why we barely won half our games with a top 3 scoring defense. DJ has no anticipation or timing and his receivers have no idea when the ball is coming. He's the worst QB we've had statistically in over 30 years and to say anyone else would have the same result is crazy.

Wow, it is the Christmas season and the time that dreams come true but your idea is a fantasy. Our QB did not lose the 3 games we lost and with all the injuries we had on both sides of the ball we did a great job of winning 9 games. No, DJ was not great but we have a long way to get to be a championship team again and it is more than him.
We will not sign a QB and all the big time ones are already off the board.

I admire your ability to somehow gloss over some really dreadful offensive performances, but that being said, we were closer to having a losing record than making the playoffs. The QB, WRs, and OL were all weak, as were the Offensive coaching staff.

we got a Natty with a freshman QB . so that is possible. But Trevor had a lot of supporting cast. We aren't where we were then . . not now anyway.

We are about twenty four and five star players on the offensive and defensively lines away from the Natty. We still have nowhere near another Tee Higgins, Michael Williams, or Hunter Renfrow on the receiving corps. Nowhere near a five star Mitch Hyatt, nowhere near a Christian Wilkins, Clelan Ferrell or Skalsky on the lines next year. Other than that, we’re looking really good.

We’re not as far away as you make it sound especially on the DL. Bresee, Murphy, Davis and if KJ comes back have the potential to be as good as any we’ve had. Twin towers at WR along with Stellato and maybe Will Taylor look pretty good. We’ll be fine.

Our DL is loaded

Our OL improved substantially when we could actually play the same 5 guys.
I do look at WR as a question, but was very pleased with the development of the Collins pair. Ngata seems poised for a breakout if he can stay on the field. The guys who left all underachieved except Ross. I'm excited to see what Stellato, Taylor, Williams, Randall and a healthy Spector add.
I've been saying what the OP said for weeks now. Get QB fixed, however that transpires, and all returns to normal.

striperfan I agree in that the 2022 team has the potential to be a National Championship if the following happen:
Offense (1) If if if the O-Line comes together (which I think will happen), (2) If if if the WRs catch the ball and block and stay healthy (reasonable chance that this will happen), (3) If if if the RBs stay healthy (reasonable chance that this will happen ... especially if we can get 1 more quality RB [signing day or via the portal]) and (4) If if if (as the OP had suggested) the QB play improves dramatically.
---and---
Defense: As you (Striperfan) had stated, the DL is loaded and has quality depth. No worries here. But with the other D-units, we need for the following to happen: (1) The LB Corp can replace the know-where-to-go and when-to-go-there and leadership (i.e., helping the OTHER defenders to go the right places) which we are losing with graduation of Skalski and Spector. (2) The Safeties Corp can replace the same issues as what the LB Corp will face in 2022. (3) The Corners can replace the excellent play in 2022 which we lose from exodus of M.Goodrich and A.Booth.
In summary, there are a pile of "ifs" which also need to happen for the 2022 team to be back in postion to not just make the CFP, but to also win the Nat.Championship.

LB needs depth

I think Bentley is ready to step in and shine. Simpson is an emerging superstar. WILL is a question, but great athleticism with Carter and Trotter. MaGuire and Allen have played very little. Woodaz could play immediately.
Not to worried about safety. Mukuba is already a star. Mickens, Venables, Zanders and Phillip's have all played a ton and Covil coming in looks strong.
CB will be an all out competition with talented guys in Jones, Wiggins, Davis, Greene and the two top 100 freshmen.

I don't know about next year (with all the players and coaches we are losing), but, this year, we were very close to winning those three games we lost with one of the worst QB's in the country (just a fact). Even with all the other issues we had, better play by the QB could have made the difference. I don't know about winning the whole thing, but we could have made the playoffs, again. Very different year. Pretty amazing to win nine (maybe ten) games with such poor QB play. Credit the defense and the coaches. Let's go win the bowl game and end on a good note. GO TIGERS!!!.
