Watched the game again last night...

Sep 5, 2014, 9:36 AM

We moved the ball with complete ease in the 1st half. About as easy as we've moved it against anyone. I believe we punted three times, but that was largely due to the fact that we had some terrible drops to kill a couple of those drives.

At the end of the day, I don't think we came out in the 2nd half and forgot how to play football-- how to execute-- just as UGA's players didn't just decide to start playing their assignments and start tackling.

When you dominate one half and then get one 1st down and 15 yards in the next half, it's because the defense is doing something different and you're probably doing the same thing.

It boils down to Pruitt making some great adjustments and Morris not reacting to those adjustments. This is not the first time this has happened with our offense under Chad's watch. He gets a ton of credit when we win, but he aught to get some of the blame when our offense is anemic. He's a big part of the reason we lost that game.

did you also slowly pull out your fingernails with pliers?

because I think that is what it would feel like watching that game again.

I haven't watched another second of it since last Saturday.

tmitchell,

It was painful.

I think the field position argument is also a valid one.

Sep 5, 2014, 9:41 AM

Sure, we can dissect Chad's play calling all day, but when your offense is starting on your own 10 over and over again, it's hard not to be conservative. On the flip side, UGA is starting on their own 40 and even close to the 50 over and over. Eventually something had to give, and it certainly did.

Spiller,

Totally agree regarding the field position argument-- BUT, at some point, you need to take a chance or break out a gadget play. Or maybe throw it to a tight end. Your defense is on the field the whole half-- you need to cut them a break. You also need to flip the field. Chad tried the same approach for, what, 7 drives in a row?

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure, I'm not saying that I agree with the play calls,

Sep 5, 2014, 9:54 AM

but I am saying that I understand the overall tendency to be conservative in that situation. Heck, I wish Chad had taken some shots.

That's a chicken and egg argument

Sep 5, 2014, 9:48 AM [ in reply to I think the field position argument is also a valid one. ]

Not saying it's irrelevant, just saying the offense not moving the ball forward means that they continue to have their heels on the endzone.

When we got down 31-21, and definitely when we got down

38-21, what did we have to loose?

I would rather have seen a "pick 6" at that point than another 3 and out.

isn't it the play calling that kept putting us in bad field position and Ga in good field position?

I rewatch all of them, to reassess my first assessment, to

Sep 5, 2014, 9:51 AM

make sure I didn't mis-assess intially.

What I saw in the 2nd half was Uga only rushing 4, getting a lot of pressure b/c the OT's were getting owned, and we did nothing to combat that, i.e. max protect or roll the qb.
We also didn't run it enough and tried to throw on 3rd and short which is retrospect was a mistake.

We also don't know what was called and what the QB's checked us into, but Chad deserves a good bit of criticism for not countering Pruitt. Again.

If anything good can come of that second half ...

Sep 5, 2014, 2:03 PM

...it is to serve as a reminder that this offense does not benefit from constant conservative play calling against a stout defense.

I'm hoping since it was a lesson learned early this year it won't be an issue later. No one can stop us unless we give them a hand ... either through turnovers or calling plays that defeat the strength of the HUNH.

Better days ahead.

Did Coach Morris allow Gurley to run at will on us?

Sep 5, 2014, 2:06 PM

Last I checked he was coaching the offense.

The highlights show lots of missed tackles and overrunning plays by our defense.

The offense definitely needed to score some points. But the defense didn't do their job either.

Re: Did Coach Morris allow Gurley to run at will on us?

Sep 5, 2014, 2:11 PM

the defense did all the way up until 9 mins to go in the game, due to the offense not producing anything in the 2nd half, which lead to the defense being on the field all 2nd half, so what the point is that if the offense could have moved the ball. The defense would have been rested which would have lead to less mental and physical breakdowns

adjustments at half. The thing he told his players was to cut down on missed assignments.

Otherwise, I think starting inside the 20 over and over and over wears on a team mentally.
