Was just talking about the game with a non-Clemson fan

Who apparently watched the whole game, as he is a sports fan and doesn’t have a dog in the fight. His first comment to me was, “the Clemson team I saw on the field today would get destroyed by the Clemson’s team from three years ago. What has happened?”

It’s a fair question. I didn’t have a good answer for him at the moment, but after thinking about it, and comparing Clemson teams from 3-4 years ago and the product we see on the field now, I think it boils down to five elements:

1. Defensive philosophy: Brent Venables was a master of tackles for loss, I’ve just not seen that under Pork Chop.

2. Boundary wide receivers. I can’t for the life of me understand how Clemson now has no receiver on the boundary that scares anyone. It handicaps us.

3. Lack of wheels for the quarterback. For many years, excluding DJ, we had quarterbacks who could hurt the opposition with legs. Cade is just pedestrian in this aspect.

4. Lack of creativity on offense: even with this new, so-called guru offensive coordinator, the playcalling is very predictable.

5. Explosiveness: where has it gone? There’s not a single player on Clemson’s’s offense that is actually explosive. Tyler Davis has shown flashes, but the explosiveness seems to have gone.

If you combine all these elements, you end up with a Clemson’s team that is two and two

Sounds like he hasn’t watched us much in the last 3 years. There’s little doubt what he said was true but most of us knew that already.

On the other hand, I think this team is better than last years but may wind up with a worse record. There’s skill on the way if we can hang onto them until signing day. Can’t argue about tackles for loss though.

1. High School player evaluations.
2. Recruiting misses

I can't believe how much wrong is in your post.

I agree with 1, 2, 5.

Not as much with 3 and 4. Cade is pretty fast and as his decision making improves I think that aspect will develop.

I thought the offense was pretty good today other than the fake reverse play and the RPO.

We are definitely lacking in explosiveness. We got what we got so the only way to fix that is through recruiting (since we are not allowed to use the portal).

The biggest thing that changed was Jeff Scott and im not talking about his coaching. He was THE PIPELINE to Florida recruits.
