Tiger Woods

Aug 7, 2013, 10:01 AM

The intimidator is back - the pretenders will just watch (and choke) as he picks up major #15 this week.

Re: Tiger Woods

don't think so...he'll choke just like the last 20 times in a major. No one is scared of him anymore. He is the best of his era but not intimidating

Re: Tiger Woods

Aug 7, 2013, 10:08 AM

Doesn't matter if he is intimidating or not. He has shown this year he is the best player in the field. The only question is if he can clear the mental hurtle he has created for himself. The rest of the field doesn't matter if Tiger has confidence in his ability to win he will win. If not he will let another one slip through his fingers.

In the majors...nothing has changed

Winning the Flintstone Open means nothing much at all.

All-time greatness is measured in victories in the majors.

great point, but when the well is dry.....

Lee Westwood says Hi! The Majors are a whole different animal. I do think he will break the streak sometime, but not this weekend.

Aug 7, 2013, 10:26 AM [ in reply to Re: Tiger Woods ]

He showed last week against 48 of the world's Top 50 players (I believe that is correct) that he's back in control.

If he can stay focused and play like last week then #15 is his to take on Sunday afternoon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do people still love Tiger?

Aug 7, 2013, 11:00 AM

He will win a major some day, but he is not back and never will be back. He ruined his career. I have no sympathy for him.

When Tiger plays in thick rough he doesn't do as well b/c he doesn't control his driver well enough. If he can hit fairways with his driver he is very good.

I always thought he should hit more stingers off the tee for control. When he does that his odds of winning go way up.

Re: Tiger Woods

Aug 8, 2013, 10:34 AM

Tiger has 4 big records he doesn't have in golf

1- majors - 4 back (jack)
2- most PGA wins - 2 back (sneed)
3- most masters - 2 back (jack)
4- lowest score at the us open (mcilroy)
Tiger just lost it to mcilroy in 2012...he has the largest margin of victory in all of the majors and holds the lowest scoring records in all but 1 major tournament.

Tiger has 7 less active years than jack and doesn't play every event like jack did. He holds the highest win percentage ever on the PGA and has done all of this with half of the starts jack did it in.

Anyone who says tiger is not the best golfer ever and can't or won't take the majors record is just a jack homer who can't be reasoned with.

Tiger is the best active or retired....no question.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

tiger feasted on the same tour that a 60 year old watson

Aug 8, 2013, 10:46 AM

embarrased not so long ago at the british.

there are more golfers, not more champions. tiger got fat on a fat tour. he's one of the greatest competitors of his time, hands down, as he didn't need someone to embarrass him to be competitive. the tour he joined, not so much.

Tiger blessed w/ the most ability of any golfer in history!

Aug 8, 2013, 1:53 PM [ in reply to Re: Tiger Woods ]

And he can still become the greatest golfer ever. It's still possible.

But, until he wins those 4 majors he still needs, he ain't "Jack".

I will be happy to eat any words I've said that are critical of Tiger's chances of breaking the record for victories in majors (the only record that means anything) if, and when it happens.

Aug 8, 2013, 3:05 PM

That means john daly is a better golfer than Steve stricker and Eli manning is better than Marino.

That logic is flawed. Majors are important but to be the best the whole body of work needs to be judged.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

now you're going to attempt to drag a team sport comparison

Aug 8, 2013, 3:33 PM

into an individual sport discussion?

nice tiger apologist mantra & save alcoholism taking daly's career, i'd say he is.

i'd also suggest john daly is a great example of how weak the tour tiger feasted on was. he was the perfect all or nothing bomber, much like an andy roddick only with an additional title.

it's a shame what's become of us golf & tennis. we should dominate, but the recent ryder cup is what's become of us.

give me connors, mcenroe, nicklaus, floyd, trevino... that would rip your heart out while they stomped a mud hole in you.

that's what tiger brings and i laud him for it, but it does not make him the greatest player ever. he's feasted on a bunch of lambs fattened by titliest, nike & calaway. these guys don't have to win, they didn't have to win when tiger came on tour. nicklaus, norman, boom boom and many others set a nice fat table. tiger made them work, they needed to do so.

Re: now you're going to attempt to drag a team sport comparison

Aug 9, 2013, 12:17 PM

You think john daly could be/is better than Steve stricker save his alcoholism? I can't agree with you there.

That Ryder cup was terrible for America but it could be easily argued that the Americans in the 70s faced weak competition from over seas. Tiger now has to face stiffer competition from the entire globe (see what I did there). We won't know until his career is done. The one thing that I don't understand is why jack gets the benefit of the doubt when he didnt own every stat during his career or after. Tiger doesn't. I suppose it's because of his transgressions off the field.

We do need some Americans to step the f up in tennis and the Ryder cup. I'm tired of seeing us get embarrassed each year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jack did not play in every tournament........

Aug 8, 2013, 3:44 PM [ in reply to Re: Tiger Woods ]

He played as little as Tiger. This only goes back to 1970, but you can see he didn't play much. He spent most of his time being a father to his 5 kids, often flying back home in the middle of tournaments to see his kids play in sporting events.

I'm not a Tiger fan (not a hater either)....

Aug 8, 2013, 10:38 AM

But if Phil, Bubba, or one of the Clemson guys do not win, I'd like to see Tiger get #15. It would shut the media up in one regard, but likely fuel the fire of chasing Jack's 18.
