Two excellent basketball signees today!

As I'm sure many of you heard, we signed two top 100 players today, P.J. Hall and Olivier Maxence-Prosper. Hall is the #1 player in SC, top 10 at his position, and top 50-60 overall. Maxence-Prosper is a consensus top 100 player. Interestingly, both are the third- and fourth-highest rated basketball signees we've ever had, although we must keep in mind that recruiting rankings are a relatively new phenomenon which doesn't include players like Skip Wise and Sharone Wright. Still, these guys are among the most talented we've brought to Clemson over the past 30 years.
Our top rated recruit ever (according to modern rankings) was 5-star Milton Jennings, who was a McDonald's All-American and a top 30 player nationally. Our second rated recruit ever was 4-star Noel Johnson, who was considered a top 40-50 player nationally. Both of those were part of our top 20 ranked recruiting class of 2009. We all know that neither Jennings nor Johnson turned out to be stars. Jennings had some behavior issues and off-court issues, and although he became a solid contributor, he never developed into the player many thought he could. Johnson didn't contribute much at Clemson, and transferred to Auburn where he was not very successful either.
I believe that both Hall and Maxence-Prosper will develop into fine players. Hall fits in nicely as a power forward who is athletic, with skills inside but who can also step outside and hit threes. Maxence-Prosper is more raw, but still very talented and athletic. I hope he can be another K.J. McDaniels type who develops into a go-to player by the time his Clemson career is said and done.
I see Hall having a chance to start next year, and if not, at least get a lot of playing time. Maxence-Prosper might take longer to develop, but I still think he will get meaningful minutes next year at the wing.
For those of you who also keep up with basketball recruiting, what are your thoughts on these two signees?

Christie and Jurkunus, both top 100, Boogie, Wideman, and Jamison who were all rated between 100 and 150.
These 5 along with Buckner, Code, and Iturbe combined to complete, arguably our best team ever.
I feel we will have a rough year this year but the future will be much better in 20-21 and 21-22.

Appreciate your points Judge, but I don't think you are giving enough credit to Prosper. The fact that he is not even 18 and jumping up a class and still highly ranked as a 4 star says how much potential he has. If he decided to wait and come out in his original class 2021, he would be rated a top 50-60 player which is higher rated than Blossomegame, Grantham, and KJ. He has a lot more skill than any of those three at that same stage when they were 17 yrs-old. Give him just a little time to refine his skill and he will be a very good player. I'd be shocked if he isn't in the top 8 rotation next season and probably start before the season is over. Want to see how good this kid is, please watch this whole game at the NBA Academy Games from July in Atlanta where Coach Goins really started recruiting him hard:

Brad even mentions how good Prosper is at such a young age in the press release of his signing:
O-Max is an athletic forward with the skill set and versatility to play multiple positions at Clemson. He’s an extremely hard worker who is dedicated to improving his game. Our coaching staff was impressed by his talent and competitive spirit at such a young age and feels like O-Max has a very bright future in basketball

You are certainly more familiar with Olivier than I am. Glad to hear that you feel his upside is so high, and that he can make a difference early. Excited to see him play!

Judge, Clark Bynum came from a smaller school but I think I remember him being a McDonald’s all American. Wonder how he stacked out in overall recruiting in that era?

Clarke Bynum and Rickie Jones were both McDonald’s All-Americans. Dean Smith recruited both heavily.

I can’t remember the last time we had a true big man signee as highly rated as Hall. I wouldn’t consider Milt the Stilt to be a “big man” by trade as Hall is, so maybe Trevor Booker? Feels good to win a battle for a big time local prospect.
Haven’t seen much film in Prosper but he looks very athletic from what I’ve seen. “Good clay“ for the coaches to work with
Hopefully we can build on the recruiting momentum

His brother Devin was actually higher rated. Probably have to go back to Sharone Wright. Jamison also was pretty highly rated.

Thanks for the update. I've been hearing that Brownell is doing a good job with recruiting. Hard to have to compete in our area.

Great but you don’t have to throw off on former players in your campaign to diminish Purnell and try to make Brownell look better.

How is it "throwing off" on Jennings and Johnson
Nov 14, 2019, 8:48 PM
|
|
by stating that they did not become the players people thought they would?
It's a generally accepted fact that neither developed like their recruiting rankings suggested. That isn't a criticism of Purnell, but rather, it shows how inexact the science of evaluating high school players can be.
Besides, I don't need to go out of my way to criticize Purnell. His tenure at Clemson speaks for itself. He did a great job turning around the mess left by Shyatt. He used a pressing style to throw the opposing team off and help us be competitive against some teams we probably wouldn't have been otherwise. It was fun to watch. That style also had its downsides, which included lots of easy baskets for teams that figured out how to break the press, as well as a tired Tiger team when postseason play rolled around. His NCAA Tournaments speak to how far he brought us, while the failure to win an NCAA Tournament game coupled with some significant recruiting misses speak to how he likely did all he could at Clemson.
Purnell is a program builder, and for that, I appreciate what he did for Clemson. I don't appreciate how he left us in such a classless way. He also left some significant issues for Brownell to fix. Thankfully, Brad has done just that.

Purnell’s system was great for the sprint athletes, agreed. No much for the long haul and or strategic gauntlet of ACC league play. He picked his poison, but was never at CU for the long term.

USA Today ranked Clemson 8th in ACC and said the two signees can be difference makers. If you finish in the top 8 or 9 in the ACC in recruiting every year you should be a top 30-40 program in the NCAA. You have to develop these guys, and with other higher ranked players for the top programs go one-and-done to the NBA, you can be a very good program. That is going to be a key for Brad and his staff is develop these guys to keep getting better. Here is USA Today write-up:
