Track: Cope Wins ACC Title

Feb 26, 2022, 8:15 AM

BLACKSBURG, Va. – On the second day of competition at ACC Championships, Daniel Cope won the ACC Championship in the weight throw with his toss of 22.28 meters. That mark not only brought him the conference crown, it is also a Jamaican national record in the event.

Alison D’Alessandro set a school-record of her own in the women’s pole vault, clearing 4.11 meters. That mark is .07 higher than her previous record which was third in Clemson history.

Dashinelle Dyer won the men’s 60 meter prelims with a time of 6.62, moving him up to seventh on Clemson’s all-time list. He will compete in the finals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Cameron Rose will join him in the championship race following his prelim time of 6.75 which earned him one of the eight spots.

Dyer also advanced to the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with his time of 7.95. Three Tigers in total will compete for the 60 meter hurdle championship, as Devon Brooks and Giano Roberts will join Dyer at 1:50 p.m., comprising three spots in the eight-man field.

Tarees Rhoden and Andrea Foster each won their heats in the men’s and women’s 800 meter, respectively and will both represent the Tigers in their finals. Rose and Guinove Joanus each qualified in the men’s 200 meter dash and will account for two of the eight slots in Saturday’s championship race.

Trishauna Hemmings will participate in two finals tomorrow, as her season-best time of 8.17 in the 60 meter hurdles pushed her into the championship heat. She will be joined by Antoinette Van der Merwe, who earned her spot with a time of 8.40, at 1:30 p.m. Then, she will make her way to the finals for the women’s 200 meter dash as her 23.97 was enough to qualify.

Courtney Williams was the lone Tiger to qualify in the 400 meter, posting a 54.97 and earning the last spot in Saturday’s championship race, while Kenya Thompson finished in a three-way tie for second in the women’s high jump, clearing a 1.78 meter bar.

“Today is what championships are made of, as we had some big performances, including an ACC champion,” said Program Director Mark Elliott, overseeing his ninth indoor conference championship meet with the Tigers. “We now have to focus on Day 3, which is the biggest day as it relates to points.”

Action on Saturday will begin at noon with the men’s shot put and conclude at 4:50 p.m. with the men’s 4x400 meter relay.

I'm sorry, but having the pole vault and shot put listed in

meters just takes away from the sport in my opinion. I mean...4.11 meters just does not project the same mental image as does 13 something feet. And no sir, I did not put it in my calculator, but I guess 4.11 meters is somewhere around that.....

So, the 'weight throw' is

the shot put? Makes sense, I guess. I wonder what they now call 'the hammer,' if that is still a track & field event.

I saw one of the unaware event distance judges get hammered once. It was awful. He had to be carried from the pub to the cab to send him home. ;)

I have no idea what the weight throw is...I just assumed.

Maybe it is the hammer throw. And I have no idea why they would change the name. Wasn't it about 24 meters which would be about 75 feet more or less....so that seems like a shot put to me...And I think I would have to throw it 5 times, all put together, to toss it 75 feet.

Confused is this track and field? Or what is this. Thought we had shut that down.
