It would seem that any HC making that kind of money would keep their program as a consistent top 5 program if they've done their diligence with seeking out and hiring the best of the best assistant coaches for the soul reason as to remaining competitive year in and year out as one of the top 5 programs in the country. I mean that is a gross amount of money per year for coaching a college FB team that should be expected to be a TOP 5 program without any excuses, IMPO!!!

I agree 100%. If I didn’t produce results that my boss expects out of me, I will get fired. Pay should be according to how the team is doing. I hope Dabo makes some changes in the off season to get us back on top of the mountain. I have witnessed teams at the top and how they have fallen from grace. Clemson is doing the same after making consecutive CFPs. It’s really sad when it’s your team. I have been a fan when we were having losing seasons. The program has taken a step back with the hiring of the positional coaches and promoting within. At least a change with the offensive coordinator happened but the team could use a better WR coach and possibly offensive line coach.

You don’t know squat about losing seasons. Your last losing season was 2010 when Dabo was in his second year. Before that, you had a losing season in the 90s. You have to go way back to the 60s and 70s to find consistently terrible Clemson teams.
We had Darrell Royal winning 3 national titles and then suffered through David McWilliams, John Mackovic and Charlie Strong. Try going to games knowing your school has more money and potential than about anyone in the country and you have no shot at winning because your leadership is a POS. Then, they name a street after him when he retires. Finally we have a good AD and the programs seem on the way up, but our fan base is a bunch of spoiled brats.
So, please forgive me if I don’t feel much sympathy for you having Dabo as your coach. I’d gladly take him.

Dabo is paid that kind of money because he transformed us from a perennial 6-5 or 7-4 ACC football program into a national champion—not once, but twice. And he did it by not just focusing on winning, but also on helping these often-spoiled, immature players become men with some values and a sense of what is right and wrong. No Clemson team under Dabo has ever embarrassed us with violations, or by taking players who are one step away from the hoosegow. (I could name such programs, but I’m sure I don’t need to . . . ) The late Al Davis, owner of the Raiders, had one piece of advice for his players and coaches: “Just win, baby.” Because of NIL and the Portal, all elite NCAA football programs are at a crossroads (just ask Nick Saban). For some, the decision is easy—just quote Al Davis. But for Clemson? Not so easy if we want to maintain the standards of our university and our head coach. It’s a tough one. And the issue is way more important than how much money Dabo makes.

Yes, totally agree and Dabo is the reason I am here. I was no Bowden fan, for sure.

You are correct that Dabo transformed the program...

6

Oct 4, 2023, 12:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Yikes! ]

but he did more than that. He transformed the entire University and, in doing so, the entire Clemson Community. Anyone with eyes and over the age of 40 who has visited Clemson with any regularity over the past 25 years can see the tremendous difference in the University and the Town since he took over the football program. Now, personally, I think the University has gotten too big for its own britches, but nevertheless...the new development at every corner, balloon in student population and bustling businesses up and down the streets are directly due to Dabo Swinney. Frankly, the Town of Clemson and every business in it owes him a debt of gratitude. He's worth every penny he is paid...and then some.

After getting drubbed weekly in the 1970’s after Frank Howard, when 49-7 losses were common.
I really appreciate Dabo, particularly after wandering in the wilderness for 20 years following Danny Ford.
One of the dumbest moves Clemson ever made was letting Danny Ford leave!
Letting Dabo leave would be twice as Dumb!

10 win seasons used to be a goal, now it defines a down year for our Tigers.

I’m all in for Dabo. Not another coach in the country I would rather have at Clemson, including Saban!

Go Tigers!

I realize that using the Portal is no easy task, plus it has the potential to undermine Dabo’s whole ethic, at least to some extent. And while I want us to be an elite, CFP program as much as anyone, I do not want us to become just another NFL feeder team (like Ga., LSU, Bama, Ohio State and, now, FSU). Plus, our perennial rival South Carolina, now under Shane Beamer, will have no qualms about using the Portal. So we have to adjust. And here is the name of just one player who is a reminder of that: Keon Coleman, the FSU receiver who killed us last week. He didn’t like the direction of the Michigan State program (they just fired their coach for ethics issues), so he transferred to FSU as Norvell began using the Portal to transform his program overnight. If Coleman had chosen another program (did we even try to get him?) then FSU would not have beaten us. That can be all it takes in the Age of the Portal—one breakout player. Dabo needs to do two things soon: (1) Hire an assistant with broad experience and lots of connections to focus on the Portal, longterm and short-term; (2) Stop calling offensive plays and turn the offensive program completely over Garrett Riley now that he is broken in to “the Clemson way”. Why else did we hire him? Let him pick his own assistants this coming off-season. Go Tiguhs!

Well said, Keithlove. Many current Clemson fans didn't live through the 25 years of mediocrity under Coaches Bowden, West and Hatfield. Nor do they recall that as fun as the Danny Ford years were, Clemson exited that era on probation. Not exactly a proud moment for our program. Meanwhile, under Dabo's leadership our Tigers have been in the CFP playoffs 6 times with 2 National Championships. Any fan who is disappointed by that record is more than spoiled. He and those around him have also done this while building a program and a culture which is a model of respectability. I have not been thrilled with the results of the past two years either, but am not even close to giving up on Coach Swinney. Some adjustments will be necessary as the portal, NIL and conference realignment change the sport that we all love. But Clemson will adapt and be back without compromising the character of our program. For those not patient enough to wait that out, feel free to think about who else is available to take the wheel - Urban Meyer is still out there. Jimbo Fisher and Brian Kelly likely will be soon. All of the above are sleezebags. As for me, I will stick with Dabo.

We made the most important change needed - QB - and the offense is vastly improved and improving.

That’s all we need. That and stop giving the other team points and missed kicks.

That’s it.

What's inexcusable is his reluctance to accept NIL for players while raking in an 8 figure salary when he can't keep a team in the top 25, let alone top 10 or top 5...

He could choose to graciously step down without a huge buyout if he can't get the Tigers back into the top CFP

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely false.

You made that story up based on… nothing.

We don’t have any “reluctance” for the NIL. We were one of the first programs to build a state of the art NIL building and operation on campus.

How long have you been following Clemson?

Who would you hire to replace him, Clemson man? I'll hang up and listen.

It's always risky to replace a legend. Ask Nebraska, or USC and I mean the real one in California. Washington Huskies had Don James, what have they done since besides the one playoff blowout. Notre Dame and Ara Parseghian.
Good luck with that replacing Dabo business. Luckily for me, I can walk away, but the rest of you will be stuck with the aftermath.

Well, there is a few assistant coaches on our staff that I would keep, but yes, the house does need a good spring cleaning, but there is huge amount of our fan base that believes Dabo deserve a huge break for what he has done over the last decade. But I see it as he has been well rewarded for the job that he done, but I also feel that as the paycheck grows, so should our FB program without ever jumping in the back seat for no one!!!

Spring cleaning? Lol. Who do we need to fire and why.

Please be detailed in your why.

Hint: we have two losses and neither of them are due to a single assistant.

Tyler Grisham - Our WR corp, while one of the highest rated in the country, have consistently been atrocious at blocking, aggressiveness and fundamentals since his hiring.

Austin - our OL should have improved much more than it has. We have 2 of the best backs in the country and consistently get stuffed on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 by much inferior teams.

Kyle Richardson - In way over his head and our TEs have not become the game changers as expected.

Goodwin demotion - Should be DC only and not coaching on field.

trajectory of the program, if you told me 10 years ago that we'd be sitting at 3-2 with the second highest paid coach in the country BUT we were just coming off an insane CFP run with two titles.. I would 100% take that every time.

So is he overpaid for the performance the last 3 seasons? Absolutely. But has he also earned it? Absolutely.

Obviously, this sentiment won't last forever if the trend continues to go down, but I don't think we are at that point yet.

It is hard to remain hungry and flexible when making those very large amounts of money, especially with such massive buyout numbers.

Considering our overall program budget is just

4

Oct 4, 2023, 11:45 AM

outside the Top 20 overall, Dabo may very well be the best value in HC salary-wise seeing as how he has delivered us Top 15 or better season ending, along with 6 CFP appearances, 11 ACC Championships, and 2 actual National Championships over the past 12 seasons, and a stocked roster as usual gearing up for more.

With basketball being a Top 50 program budget yet averaging 75th place at season's end over these past five years, it's helpful to know how to put things in proper perspective when coming across a stat like this.

Go Tigers! Go Dabo!

Ask yourself how much revenue, both directly and indirectly, Clemson University, the town of Clemson and the state of SC have incurred through Dabo's tenure as our HC. Studies have been conducted on this and the number is in the Billions. I'd say he has more than covered his annual salary with significant room to spare.
