Wow . . . I don't begrudge Brad

I don't begrudge Brad pushing for various program improvements, etc. but the simple fact is that great strides could be made (and could have been made in recent years past) without said improvements, if we had done two very simple, straightforward things: (1) Have the team practice shooting and ###(n) near nothing but shooting (under duress, that is) on a regular basis, until they were having nightmares about shooting drills . . . until it had the effect of not having the chronic, frequent spates of absolutely abysmal FG percentages; and (B) do the same thing with rebounding drills; do it, do it and do it again, until rebounds are practically bleeding out of every orifice of your body, and you're waking up in cold sweats of nightmares of rebounding drills.
Yeah, yeah, I know, they practice such things already. Of course. I'm not denying that. Everyone does. But the unavoidable fact is that these two very basic fundamental aspects of the game are consistently chronic problems of Brownell's teams, and even without big bells and whistles improvements, we could do better.

NCAA rules govern the number of hours the student-athletes spend in organized team activities.
Since those hours are at a premium value to a coach, he spends them on team concepts, like team defense, the motion of the offense, breaking the press, etc.
Shooting and free throw shooting are skills that players can practice very easily outside of practice with no one other than an equipment manager to assist them. They are expected to do that.
If you want Brad to spend practice time going over individually practiced skills, you are asking him to either A) violate NCAA limits on practice time or B) eliminate some team activities from practice. Which do you prefer?
And BTW, did you notice that every highly proficient offense in the country had a long scoring drought during the NCAAT? ND, UNC, Kansas, Nova, Gonzaga, Duke...all of them.

i hear a lot of what tommy bowden said...(paraphrasing) "i know we lose a lot, but a bunch of other schools lose a lot, too". meaning: don't compare us to the best, compare us to the worst.
whatever.. i honestly never expect much from our bball program. just win on saturdays in the fall.

and tons of big bowl games against top level opponents and HOF coaches.
And then we hired several crappy coaches - like Brownlee - in a row and hung onto them for TOO long.
AND THEN we hired a guy with drive & personality & VISION - and he FORCED the improvements to be made through drive & winning & charisma & preaching the vision to ANYONE that would listen. He WILLED the vision into existence.
Brad is a doorknob.
And you aren't seeing this JK because you are a wuss and have me on ignore. You troll.

He didn’t explain a single thing that has happened that is suddenly going to make us a Final Four team. The new AD believes in him? JFC, it unbearable what a joke out basketball program under this guy is. We’re down two starters and an assistant coach but we’ll be better than ever because reasons. And don’t worry - even if we’re not we have the full support of the new AD so this sh*t show gets to go on forever. We all know he’s gonna limp into an NIT bid and win a couple games and get a 6 year extension and a massive raise out of it. Then he’ll miss the post season the next 2 years. But that’s completely fine with the Brad Brownell Bros and those of us that would like to pretend we might win something, anything of consequence before we die are the *ssholes

Idiot - Tommy never so much as won a division. What magic investment occurred between the end of 2008 and 2009 that allowed first year head Coach Dabo Swinney to win our first division title? It obviously couldn’t have been coaching. Has to be money spent. What facility was under a tarp that Tommy couldn’t access that Dabo did? What allowed him to, 2 years later, win the ACC title?
The real answer is absolutely nothing. It was solely coaching. The real investment wouldn’t come until after this point where he proved he had brought a significant change to the culture of the program. One that was worth investing in. Additionally, Dabo knew what he wanted. Brownell just had his presser and didn’t actually name a single thing that they’re going to do to improve the program.

JK, have you ever worked for anything? Or is it just given to you?
You don't just get investments and money because you say you want it. You have to earn it. Brownell hasn't earned it. You comparing him to football is ridiculous. You didn't see the massive progress in the football program in a very short time period between Brownell and Dabo? It was AFTER Dabo had proven progress and direction that the money started flowing.

Serious program investments have been made Brad, you’re a highly paid coach (top 40) you have a great facility. You’re just not getting it done in the win / loss column. Excuses about “investment” is just blaming the school for your lack of performance, it’s getting very old.
I’m sure you don’t know anything about this, but Clemson won a national championship with a very modest football budget I’m talking about in the 80s and dominated for years after that. The program fell behind yes, but there was tremendous investment under Tommy Bowden, and he still couldn’t win. That’s why he was fired bro. They backed up his lame talk about facilities, gave them to him, and he still couldn’t win. Same with you. We could turn Little John into a 25,000 seat arena and double your salary, and You still wouldn’t win squat.

Do you know why?
Because you are making stuff up.
Who said that 16-15 is good? Answer: NO ONE!
Brad and Neff have both said that this past season was disappointing. Nobody is happy with a 16-15 record.
Stop creating straw men arguments just so you can criticize them and find more to whine about.
The program needs your support. If you can’t see that our coaches and players work their tails off, and have overachieved based on what they should’ve done given the pathetic support for basketball at Clemson, then you simply aren’t paying attention.

Here's this stupid statement, yet again. When will you realize that "support" does not mean unwavering confidence and acceptance of mediocrity? It does not mean being content with 12 years of repetitive problems. "Support" is also found in encouraging progress, trusting in change, and addressing challenges in ways other than "rinse and repeat", easy-button decisions.

If you want to talk about facilities under Danny, that was a different era but we had very good facilities then. They were dated by the time Bowden was hired.

Then how do these tiny schools make runs deep into the NCAA tourney every year?! Villanova is the school with facilities that are on par with no one. Yet they field a final four team very often. What about UNLV under Tark? Sure, he bent the rules. Loyola Marymount had a juggernaut for a while. St Joesephs, and powerhouse Gonzaga all do more with less. Any team coaches by the Drew family do well with less. Buy in. Coaching. Recruiting. Einstein said insanity it doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. The same thing here is Brownell. Perennial loser. Facts. Hire a Drew. Hire Saint Peter’s coach. Hire anyone who has the fire to build a program. Clemson has a wealth of facilities compared to the aforementioned schools in this post. Sick of hearing excuses. At least OP put is int the tourney and competed. His teams were scrappy. If they shot free throws they could have been really good. There is NO reason we can’t be competitive in basketball at Clemson. BB is NOT the answer.

Tickets are expensive and hard to come by for the Final Four, but that’s a nice gesture by BB.
I’d settle for making the Dance on a semi regular basis and finishing in the top 4 in the ACC.

I'll never be happy until we've made it to the final 2, and coming away from that match up on top as the National Championship winner. With all the losing our basketball program has done over our history as a D-1 basketball program, anything less than the NC, only means we are still losers, never being a winner in Basketball!!!

I wouldn't call him a loser, but he will definitely not take us to where we would all like to be. I'm ok with being in the top half of the conference most every year. If we do that, we will get into the NCAA tournament most years and may even win a few games in the ACC tournament.

I do not know Graham Neff but he did not become the AD of a huge department by not knowing what is going on. If Neff thought he could find another coach who we could afford and could do a better job than Coach Brownell, he would have made the switch. What every fan has to understand is we are not a Duke or a North Carolina and will not magically become a Final 4 team just by finding a new coach. Can and should we be one the 68 teams that make the tournament, absolutely and it has to happen this season.

I’m not speaking to Neff specifically but you do not understand how bureaucracy and large, public institutions work if think people don’t advance without knowing what’s going on. Athletic departments, in particular, are often good ole boy networks and because of their unique nature have very little in the way of real prerequisites. People with zero relevant experience have been promoted straight to AD - look at SCar. And lest you think that’s an exception LSU did the same thing years earlier. The captive nature of their primary audience (fans) allow even terrible ADs to remain in place for years. Most donors simply won’t stop donating for risk of losing their place in line.

Leave it to the experts here to complain about what Brad said.

I’ve read for years here how Brad has no vision, no goals for the program. Then when he lays out his vision publicly, he is met with smirks and jokes.
The key here, as I’ve been screaming for years, is that our goals must be commensurate with the AD’s investment in the program.
You haven’t heard much in the way of public comments from Brad about his goals for the program before now, because the willingness by the administration to invest accordingly hasn’t been present. But now it is.
This is going to be fun!

Lol. “Me Go Final Four”. What vision. What forward looking bravado. What’s actually happening to enable that? Don’t ask stupid questions. We just want to now.

Phil Jackson could win on a dirt playground court because he can COACH. Brownell could not win in the Staples Center because he can’t COACH.
Easily over half of Clemson losses come from not knowing how to play or bad decisions by BB. The rest of them come from other teams having better players that play with a game plan.

Umm, Phil Jackson only won when he had the likes of Michael Jordan

Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant.
How successful was he when he coached the Knicks? LOL!
Gregg Popovich was really successful when he had David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Tony Parker. How’s he doing since then? LOL!
Talent matters. How do you get top talent? You invest in the program. You make sure you have the best facilities and the highest paid coaches - you know, like we did with our football program to get to the top.

Wrong. Cart before horse. Again. You never address how the mid-majors or "lesser spending" majors have consistently better teams than we do. The lack of talent is a recruiting and development issue. That's on Brad.
Clown.

It's not what he said but what he didn't. How? Nothing was said about what would be different from the 12 previous years. With who we have next year, we will likely have a good year for Clemson. Doubt that we sniff the Final 4 but we will probably make the tournament.
If we miss the tournament, but have major injuries should Brownell be fired? The buck has to stop somewhere. There has been investment in the facilities and program. Since he hasn't won, it just wasn't enough.
I don't doubt his desire. Just his ability. He's a good guy. So was Ken Hatfield. Sometimes you just need a change.

There are jokes because it's out of character. He's always tried to temper expectations and talk about how we were a little better than we should have been. He fell into that trap a little today as well.
I think it's a good thing that we are hearing a vision and trying to move the focus to the future. He needs to make an effort to spend a little time talking about the future whenever he speaks to the media.
It seems like previously, there was alignment with the administration and the coach that mediocre was the standard. With a new AD that has changed. We'll see if the coach can adapt to the new AD's vision or maybe as you suggest this was Brad's suppressed vision all along.

Wasn't on board? The renovations to Littlejohn weren't paid for with Monopoly money. His pay is pretty darn good for his successes.
I guess you didn't watch the Tourney since we weren't in it. It's a shame. You could have seen the St Peter's students showing up in there high school gym to beat Kentucky, Murray St, and Purdue before finally losing to UNC in the elite 8. I guess if they had invested like Clemson they would have run away with the title.

Brad raised a ton of the money for the new facilities himself.
Apr 13, 2022, 9:37 PM

The administration said that he would have to raise funds if he wanted them to get behind it.
He did. And you know what our administration did? They downgraded the plans, because they are CHEAP.
I know our football loving fans think we spend a lot on basketball, but we don’t. The new facilities are nice, but it’s not like we set the standard for facilities in college basketball. They are good but not great facilities. And there is plenty more we need to spend money on besides facilities if we want to be a consistent NCAA Tournament team.
Since you say facilities don’t matter, we should stop spending so much on Clemson football. Right?!?

The dirty secret is that Larry Shyatt is a better coach than Brownell. How many pro teams and national championship winning coaches do you think are gonna be clamoring for Brownell if/when we finally move on?

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha! Wow, that was hilarious! I want to make a gajillion dollars next year but my previous 12 year track record indicates my chances to do so won’t even equate to making a rounding error of it! And my plan to get there is a version of the plans I’ve used all 12 of those years!

I liked his opening statement and his responses for the most part. I think he did a good job of recapping the season. He also did a decent job of explaining the culture and attitude of the program that has resulted in consistency. He also acknowledged that the level of that consistency hasn't reached his expectations. He then went through the roster to build some excitement on the guys we have coming in and coming back.
Brad needs to stop trying to defend the past. He brought up several different stats that all seemed to show that we are about 7th in the ACC over the last 5 years. He went on tangents about how hard it was to get to that point. If he cut that out his responses would have sounded so much better because he followed that by talking about culture and getting to the next level.
It seems that there may be additional staff changes coming based on some of his comments. There may be more support for assistant coaching salaries coming. It seemed like a point of emphasis. I guess if we are committing to bring in top tier assistants, we need to have openings.
I think there was an effort especially in the opening statement to change the narrative from "We haven't been that bad considering the circumstances" to "We have a culture that we are using as a foundation to get to the next level"

I’m with you…how much longer can we ride the “wait til next year,” “it was a rebuilding year,” “we’re fighting the NIL in recruiting,” or “we are just plan getting beat on the arc.”
When is anyone being Brad being held accountable and not given an extension and another chance going to end. As a fan base we have to demand more from that Neff guy and administration.

Hum, let me make my answer "Loud and clear"; First off lets not even discuss the "Final Four" .You have to make the Tournament first. Remember it's the "Road to the Final Four". In order to make the Tournament you need to win, in all likely hood 20 games. In 12 seasons Brad's team have won 20 games 4 times or .333%. In order to make the Tournament you need to finish ,say no worse than 5th overall in the conference. Brad's team have done that 3 times or.250% Finally, in order to make the Tournament you need to win the ACC Championship ( or at least get to the semi-final game) and Brad's teams have done that ZERO times. So I would say Mr. Brownell has his work cut out for him. I sure hope Mr. Neff has seen these statistic's
