Time To Wake Up

I see alot of people complaining that football is now “all about the money”.
Wake up. Football has almost always been about the money. This is an entertainment industry. Players go on the field and perform so that you and I can be entertained and pay money for that entertainment. Granted, there are lessons learned along the way.: Discipline, teamwork, etc. But this is a byproduct of the specific program the players are in. Football as a whole is pure entertainment. Coaches and universities have been making money off of this from the beginning. Let’s not get angry now that the performers get a cut of the ticket price.

Spider,
I call bullyshit on your bullyshit. Back in the 60s and 70s lots of marquee players had part time jobs for which they got paid royally - and never had to show up. Their have been boosters and gamblers willing to pay athletes since there were athletes.

Right, but that was done to make sure they played for the team the person paying wanted them to play for. And they played every game.

Anytime you add money to compensate amateur players, you done f’ked up the whole situation. Just my opinion. And yes I’m an old soul. And body.

Seriously. That's like paying slaves! Why would ever want to pay the labor? They should be grateful!

It’s not labor if you love the game. I played collegiate sports. If you are on scholarship, you are being paid. No one is Forcing them to play unlike your slave reference. Jeeezzzz.
Do we need to pay high school players also?

Also, explain the phenomenon of walk-ons. Guys who want to play so badly that they PAY THEIR OWN WAY, put in their blood, sweat, and tears and almost never step foot on the playing field.
One step up are the 80 or so scholarship players who know they have zero chance of ever getting into the NFL. They know they are good, but not that good. Good enough that they are willing to play a game they (probably) love for a scholarship and some small perqs.
We've ruined the game for all those kids so that the 3-5 players on teams that are draftable can get paid early.
Not to mention all the athletes that are in non-revenue sports. Why are athletes on the track team or the gymnastics team or the tennis team, who were clearly not being exploited for the TV money, somehow different that the football players?

Rock,
If high schools were making billions and billions of dollars on football - then I would have to answer yes.

But what about notoriety. Best high school football in the state. Best players we can pay. Schools don’t pay the players. So the high school’s income is irrelevant. Boosters and nil money!

I think a free college education is a little different than a slave.

So what is a College Education worth?
Dec 16, 2022, 4:56 AM
[ in reply to Re: Time To Wake Up ] |

For a regular SC resident Clemson undergrad the estimated cost per academic year is $36,210; for a non-resident Clemson undergrad that number increases to $60,154 per academic year. So a 4 year Clemson degree costs $144,840 for a SC resident and $240,616 for a non-resident to obtain. Of course those costs increase if the student attends summer sessions in addition to a regular fall and spring semester schedule. Those costs don't include tutors, stipends, world class gym memberships and the many other extras a scholarship football player receives.
So before we refer to football players as "slaves" perhaps a little perspective is in order. A scholarship football player is being provided a lot of compensation through their athletic scholarship for their amateur labor - including those whose labor never plays a down in a real game. There once was a time where there was some value attached to an athletic scholarship but unfortunately a free college education isn't even part of the "fair" compensation discussion these days - it's all about cold hard cash.
But rest assured - if the push to turn college athletes into college employees comes to fruition you can bet the IRS is going to re-discover the value of a "free" college education. Once the IRS gets involved, it won't just be sports agents these amateur athletes desire but tax attorneys as well while leaving some of the less popular athletes to find they can't afford the "free" college education.

The SCOTUS ruling used the flawed premise that athletes were employees, thereby the NCAA rules that applied were illegal because of employment laws. But they were not and are not employees (yet).
If/when they become employees (and form a union), they will learn quickly about what the taxman demands. All the things they are accustomed to are taxable fringe benefits. They will be subject to state-by-state jock taxes, where 1/Nth (where N is the number of games played) of your income is deemed to have occurred in the state that the game was in, so you end up having to file income taxes in 6 or 7 states every year.

People that watch on TV think are the ones who really make the money role in.
They don't realize that the football game is not the product, but they are the product.
The fans watching on TV are being sold by ESPN and others to the advertisers.
