Andre Segovia close 2nd
3rd is a tie between way to many. Mentioned a ton already
Lukather Stapleton Mongrain is stupid talented Buckingham Jeff Healey was special...
Mostly seeing generational talent or path creators, then the derivative creations beyond is exciting.
I've honestly seen a ton of concert or studio guitarist that could probably slay many top names. The personality makes the superstar most times. There's tons of talent everywhere

Chet Atkins, one of the greatest country guitarist, ever Can’t think of his name, but the big guy that played lead guitar for Steely Dan.. The rif from Reeling in The Years was one of rock and rolls greatest. Prince. I’m not a big fan of his music, but he was very good..

I know he wasn’t an original member of the Dan, He was a studio musician. Jimmy Page said that was the greatest guitar solo he’d ever heard. Becker and Fagan were the founders.

Yeah. Once Clapton was asked what was it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. He answered, "I don't know, ask Prince." It's always personal opinion, but that one counts for a lot.

Each of these are great and there are so many that could be on that list. Greatest instrument for me is the guitar and then violin and/or piano.
I agree with the one poster about Prince. If you ever go to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, they have a short documentary film about rock music and Princs's guitar solo in "While my Guitar slowly weeps" was an iconic moment in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history. Give it a listen.

I didn't see this originally but YES -- this guitar solo was just so dadgum nasty.
Also, his performance at the Super Bowl some years ago still stands for me as one of, if not the best ever, at this point in time.

Hillwood CC?
A golf pro friend of mine used to take a group to Florida to play golf including Chet, Bill Anderson, Jerry Reed, and a few others. Chet used to take his “girlfriend” and act like no one else knew she was there🙂

…can’t leave off Tommy Emmanuel or Terry Kath. If we’re keeping the list to those we’ve seen in person, I’d go with those two and Mark Knopfler. Wait, add in Peter Frampton. Yes, I’m old.
As someone else said, there’s a lot of talent out there - pretty much impossible to truly judge.

Agreed. I still feel some hurt when I listen and think of the immense talent that died with them.
If you haven’t heard any of Leonid and Friends tributes to Chicago, you need to watch their studio take on 25 or 6 to 4. Channeling Kath on the solo. Eerily similar to Cetera on the vocals also.

Wanted to throw in a few more from my original 3 that I had the privilege of seeing. Lived for concerts during my high school and college days!

If you look back and include awards - Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Josh White, BB King, Eric Clapton to name but a few. As for ability at all levels and including acoustic, Clark (the claw), White (at Midnight), Atkins (backed up tons of artists).

Prince? He wasn’t even as good as the girl in his own band.
Plus, a 5’2” guy can’t be good at coaching Alabama, oh wait, Saban is a couple inches taller.

You can’t go wrong with any of those guys, but possibly Roy Clark was the GOAT. I might have said Jimi, but his life was too short, sadly. That stupid 27 club is overrated

Not naming anyone. But, to me, just being FAST on the geetar

doesn't make you GREAT on the geetar. Just because you can show off your manual dexterity does not mean you are making ear pleasing music. Just be cool, like this:

Prince is Greenville was unreal.
IMO Derek Trucks is the greatest living guitarist.

Always a fun convo, there are right or wrong answers. A million great players with iconic unique sounds. For my money, the player has to be a groundbreaker. Hendrix was from another planet and those were the comments from his contemporaries like Clapton and Townsend. EVH defined a generation. With all of his ridiculous technique, the guy could swing with every note. After that, it’s a murderer’s row of Page, Beck, Duane Allman, Zappa, Garcia, Gilmore, Winter, Guy and SRV. Too many to list. What a great problem!

The better question would be who are the 3 best guitarists you ever seen in person live!
