Thoughts on the Miami game....

Oct 20, 2015, 11:21 AM

This game could well be the best game of the year. Miami is no easy out for anyone. They have proven thus far that they can play the game. A convincing win over Nebraska and a very close loss to FSU shows their abilities. I am not sure how strong they are in the defensive front and that will be very important. BC whipped us with their front guys but the 'Canes probably are not as strong as the Eagles. I am not sure that the Tigers are as solid in the offensive line as many of you believe. The coaches have done a good job thus far of hiding our weaknesses in the OL. Against BC the defensive rush against Watson forced him to get rid of the ball early and that resulted in passes that were almost on target ... but not quite perfect. Can Miami do that as well? I expect to see intermediate passes in this game. I am surprised that Seckinger has not been more of a factor this year. Perhaps he is still banged up. Renfro continues to show that he belongs and I look for him to have a big day in South Florida Saturday. Teams are starting to allow their linebackers to help on the screen passes and they are not as effective as they once were. Good blocking is a must on the screens if the skill guys hope to get free. I think that the running game will need to get going Saturday to help Watson. Passes to backs coming out of the formation have also been rare thus far. I really like Brooks in this role as well as Cain and McCloud. I am hoping Saturday will bring some new looks to the offense. The Miami QB is a very good player but Clemson is no slouch on D! Glad this is a day game. the Tigers are at least a ten point better team in the daytime ... and they will need to be Saturday. 38 - 27

Screen game doesn't have to be used to gain huge yards. Most of the time they are called to take pressure off of the O-line. If the LBs start coming through hard then you start hitting the screens to take the LBs off the blitz so they also have to start look for the screen. But yes on all other things.

I agree. Thus my statement that the coaches have done a good job! Other teams have attacked Clemson in a similar way. Boulware and Goodson are often forced into pass coverage on short underneath plays. They get lots of tackles in games and all of them are not at the line of scrimmage!

You can be respectful of your opponent without fearing them! I suspect that Dabo and Company ain't 'skeered' of nobody!

Agree with all of it. I saw where their leading tackler will not play this week so that will help. I think he played linebacker.

We Need To Limit Turnovers

Oct 20, 2015, 11:35 AM

their db's are ballhawks. against bc, there were many missed assignments on screens. particularly, not holding blocks long enough by backs and te's. miami will be jacked for the game. need to jump on them like irish. mac needs to be smart and not give up the big play because i think they will throw his way just to prove they can.

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

Has this Miami team changed that much since losing to Cincinnati, a team that scored 34 on them? I remember after that game, there were posts leaving little doubt that we would win going away. Now, all of the sudden, they're a Notre Dame or FSU caliber team? I mean, yes, they took a 1-2 Nebraska team to OT and they beat a bad VT team by 10 points. The FSU game is one of those rivalry games that always seems to be a close one. But, what has changed so much about this Miami team? I think we have the superior offense and defense. If our special teams is solid, we win with ease, which we need to do for confidence and rankings for the last half of the season.

I agree with all that's been said. Miami hasn't looked amazing by any stretch, and on paper it's a forgone conclusion. But paper doesn't play the game. I think, and I know the coaches will hit hard on this point, that it is important to remember we are going to get everyone's best shot. That means they are going to be doing whatever it takes to come away with defeating a top ranked Clemson program. You best believe that Al Golden is trying to scheme something up to pull a card from the Texas vs. Oklahoma game. His career is in serious jeopardy and pulling off a signature win sometimes buys another year to your tag.

Dabo and company are no stranger to this idea, and will preach that to the team. So much so we will come into the game feeling like underdogs and having to prove who we are, and that should be the answer we need. I can only imagine the hype that dropping in the polls has created in our locker room. All phases play well, we get the W, and hopefully in easy fashion.

But you have to respect the dire situation down in Miami, this is a must win for them and their coach. We will no doubt get their best shot.

"There's something in these hills and I suspect that's what it is - the ability of an institution through the unending dedication and greatness of its people - its administration, its faculty, its staff, its students and alumni - to impart to all it touches a respect, an admiration, an affection that stands firm in disquieting times when things around it give impressions of coming unglued." - Joe Sherman '34

Dead on...and to be honest, while I know many of you are angry about dropping in the polls, the reality is it doesn't matter at all right now, if we win out we're fine...I liked dropping because the last time we dropped the players were pissed and felt disrespected, we need to have that chip on our shoulder and feel like we're being counted out, not sure we've proven we can play as the 'big favorite' just yet.

That said, I hope ESPN has us on upset alert for every one of our remaining games...and knowing them they'll likely have us on upset alert against Wake as well.

Oct 20, 2015, 12:10 PM [ in reply to Re: Thoughts on the Miami game.... ]

You are correct, it is the same team...they were clearly not interested and didn't show against Cinci and the FSU game is a rivalry so they were at their best. They will come to play against us, without question, at least out of the gate (caveat because I think if we get up on them big early they may fold with all the coach hot seat, injuries, etc.); but they will come out with their hair on fire so we need to weather the initial storm, have no turnovers, and go about our business.

They have a ton of talent but have also had a lot of injuries, their QB is one of the best in the conference if not nation, but their OL is a dumpster fire and they've not had much of a run game. We should be able to exploit both and let Mack, TJ, Cord, and Tooty eat and do what they do on the back end. Miami will hit some big passes, no doubt, but we should be able to get enough pressure on Kaaya to force bad throws and get a pick or two. Their D is suspect against the run - yes their DBs are good and are ball hawks - but if we start chewing up yardage on the Wayne Train, they'll have to commit more to the box and DW4 should have a filed day hitting the mid-deep pass.

Point was made earlier, Miami has enough talent to play and beat anyone in the country if they play their best and are firing on all cylinders...this one make me far more nervous than NCSU for that reason.
