"They Just Wanted It More"

How often have we heard it said or read that "Team X wanted it more than Team Z"? I've never seen a "Wanted it More" meter or reference to any other means of determining that a particular team wanted it more. Many factors determine the winner and loser of a game and. more often than not, the stats reside on the side of the winner. It appears to me it's just another one of those clichés that game announcers and writers use to fill up time and space. Quite often it's an opinion reported as fact with not one iota of evidence to support their statement.
The cliche I place at the top, and probably one that will remain with us forever, is "he has a first down and them some". That "and then some" can be as little as a cat's whisker or the remaining yards for a touchdown. Well, at least there's a first down.

“Fifteen minutes could save you up to 15% or more,” or in other words somewhere between 0 and 100 percent.

Can "wanted it more" also be defined as "willing to do anything to get it"?
Like when Cleveland came back from the 2-0 and 3-1 deficits, Steph Curry's and Klay Thompson's guys were NOT willing to punch grannies or hurt the game of basketball. They didn't " want it more". They weren't "willing to do anything to get it."
So they lost, waited 6 weeks, then signed KD and....hurt the game of basketball.

And you can bet the house that that was the reason Clemson has 1st round NFL guys getting ready to walk into Dabo's Indoor Arena instead of NFL pre-season football.

No, there's no "want meter'.But there's also no "love meter"

"hate meter", "courage meter", "coward meter", "jealous meter", "honest meter", "lazy meter", "busy meter"...you get the picture...but there are certainly degrees of all those things; and often we can tell who has more or how has less.
I've watched a lot of sporting events in my day; and every now and then it's pretty danged obvious, even with out a "want-it-more meter", that certain players on a certain team just want it more than certain players on another team.
Which is may it a coach's, or general's or, boss's job to try to MOTIVATE their team's, or army's, or employee's desire.

I submit that what you've observed...

was the results of 'wanting it more,' during preparations. Imo, it would take a radical difference between how much two teams wanted it to be able to notice a difference. I suppose it's possible. I've seen teams give up too.

That is exclusively true in one sense.

Sometimes players get beaten by the game plan. In that case the coach on the winning team may have prepared a more thorough game plan because he wanted it more.
A player who goes to practice, film room and workouts early and stays to work longer may often contribute more that had he not been exceptional in those areas of preparation. When comparing him to opponent he may have wanted it more.
It is also possible that some players like Clowney didn't care. Imo, everyone wanted it more than him. As far as a team wanting a victory on gameday as you described, that's total hogwash.
They don't call football a competitive sport without justification.

Sometimes we associate "wanting it more" by the physical emotions displayed by the players. Some players, by nature, go about it in a more business-like approach without the "rah-rah". We tend to associate the "wanting it more" to the team that wins. It there is truly a "wanting it more" factor, I suspect there are a lot of those teams on the losing end when the final whistle blows.

A lot of announcers/commentators I noticed use the term more to save face. Compare the pregame predictions with the post game analysis you’ll start to see a pattern. If their predictions were right they will recap their earlier statements. If they were wrong that’s when all the generic comments start pouring out “they just wanted it more.”
