I guess there's no point in trying then

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/06/upshot/when-beliefs-and-facts-collide.html?

Once people’s cultural and political views get tied up in their factual beliefs, it’s very difficult to undo regardless of the messaging that is used.

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” Isaac Asimov

"As a result of surveys like these, scientists and advocates have concluded that many people are not aware of the evidence on these issues and need to be provided with correct information. That’s the impulse behind efforts like the campaign to publicize the fact that 97 percent of climate scientists believe human activities are causing global warming."

There was once a scientific consensus that the Earth

Jul 7, 2014, 10:41 AM

was flat. The brightest minds for centuries all agreed the Earth was flat. Observations bolstered these views. They lacked the data to form a clear picture, nonetheless you could be burned at the stake for thinking otherwise because there was a political motive as well. Sounds familiar.

Few see the irony in global warming zealots calling skeptics Flat Earthers.

As a skeptic, you have to ask:

How did the Earth get as warm, (and WARMER) in the past than it is today?

If I am to believe the Earth is getting warmer because of anthropogenic factors, what were the factors that led to warming in the past?

If (human) carbon is the culprit, and the laws of thermodynamics still apply, what recourse is there other than reducing combustion and heat to a level that can not sustain current levels of human populations?

Why do you hold such a theory that we will survive long enough to kill ourselves off from carbon emissions and resulting global warming, given the current population's exponential growth coupled with other more rapid and probable mechanisms for mass death such as viruses, bacteria, volcanoes, or even meteors?

And what possible political motive could there be for blaming the most successful nation/government/economy on Earth for destroying the planet?

There is a lot of room for skepticism....

that was waaaay back in the 1970's.

Same cause though. Funny how they didn't try to mask the political connection back then.

There was never, ever, a scientific consensus that the Earth was flat.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

Many people did believe Earth was at the center, but not 97% of scientists. Shortly after the modern scientific method was developed, the Copernican model was adopted despite some religious objections.

Meanwhile, over centuries we have not seen a scientific reversal of that cosmological shift. If we did, it would shake our faith in the notion of scientific progress.

And on and on. H. Pylori causes most ulcers. The guy that discovered that was certainly swimming against a huge wave of 'knowledge.'

This myth is great, Eratosthenes not only proved the earth was round around 250 BC, he also figure out the circumference of the Earth.

Yes, this is true, and his method was ingenious.***

Dang, so close! The earth looks like a flattish circle, but actually it's a sphere. It should have said "he that sitteth upon the sphere of the earth."
