The Doomsday Playoff Scenario
Nov 8, 2017, 8:53 AM
|
|
This is entirely possible, so here it is: Jawja wins out but loses to 'Bama. ND wins out. Clemson wins out. OK wins out. Wisconsin wins out.
'Bama is in.
Who else gets in? This scenario scares me a little bit. I'm thinking Wisconsin, fraud that they are, may jump us as an unbeaten P5 conference winner. That leaves 2 spots open.
Thoughts?

the defending National Champions will trump (no pun intended) either the Sooners or the Badgers.

In that scenario, Bama is in. Wisky is in bc they won’t leave out an undefeated P5 conf champ. ND is in because they have the “best loss” (not counting UGA loss to Bama in SECCG). And then it’s us and OK. I think UGA gets left out, fairly or unfairly. And between OK and us, as much as I hate it, the way Mayfield is playing and leading the Heisman race, they may get the nod. This scenario scares me - glad I don’t actually think it’ll pan out like this!!!
GO TIGERS!!!!

No way they will be leaving a team that has beaten 4 or 5 Top 25 teams and defending National Champions off the list. I think ND may end up being left out because they do not have the final matchup at the end of the season like the rest do. Look at Oklahoma last year. They were jumped the conference championship weekend because they did not have a championship. Go Tigers. Win we're in.

a 1 loss conference Champion (Clemson) gets in above 2 one loss non conference champions (UGA, ND).

They need to grow a pair

And exclude the Irish. Their resume is pretty strong and they bring a ton of viewers. However, they need to compete for and win conference championships in the current format.
with this line of thinking...they get pushed into the ACC sooner than later.
Following the conference champions matter to its logical extension...
Bama Clemson Wisc. OK
The but but but .....
if a 2 loss team puts it on Wisc. in the championship game....then ND gets in. They are the fat girl you ask out when the hotty stiff arms you.

Well said. That’s the foursome that looks most “right” to me. But, the love fest with ND, despite their ducking a conference, seems to continue...

Say a 2 - 3 loss big 10, pac12, acc champion with ND, UGA, and Bama winning out (minus SEC champ game). That might, might force the committee to put in 2 SEC teams and thus would be a nightmare scenario. This is the only way the SEC gets 2 teams and a tough call for the who gets the fourth spot.

Everyone is assuming that UGA is going to beat Auburn this week. The one thing that Auburn has going for them is they are very tough against the run. UGA hasn't proved to anyone they can beat you through the air and their defense gave up 28 points to Missouri, So not sure their offense can outscore Auburns offense. That game will probably be the best game this weekend. GO Tigers.

I really don't think Wisconsin is getting in no matter what. 1st I don't think they will win the big ten and 2nd even if they did win out, they would end up beating a team in the Big Ten Championship that will end up with 3 losses. The conference is definitely much weaker then a lot of "Experts" thought after last weekend. Clemson will get in if they take care of business.

Getting in.
I have an issue with 2 teams from the same conference getting in.
That is t he only senario that would irritate me.

I don't think Wisconsin gets in at all

They just don't have the wins to justify getting in over 1 loss teams. I'm surprised so many on here think the loser of the SEC championship gets left out.
If UGA and Bama win out the regular season, I think both will make the playoff regardless of the SEC title game outcome. (Unless maybe it's a blowout)

In your scenario, if Clemson wins out with a couple of convincing wins, they will be in playoffs.
