The 40 time the most

over rated physical measurement in football. You can either run or you can't a 4.4 or 4.33 is very subjective and can't be verified the way it's timed. If the NFL standard for 40 times, strength, and height and weight made good football players the Oakland Raiders would be Super Bowl Champs because that is what they draft by every year and it's why they keep getting high 1st round picks.
Look at the 49'ners under Bill Walsh, or the NY Giants under Bill Parcels, and New England under Bill Belichick they never had high draft picks, but they win.
Look how quickly Bill Parcels turned Dallas around and how quickly it went down after he left and he didn't use the NFL standard for his draft picks. He drafted players he make plays he didn't care about 40 times, height, weight, or any other standard.
The 40 time is so over stated how many times during a game does a player run 40 yards? DL,OL,LB almost never.... How many times does a WR, DB, RB, and QB run 40 yards at top speed in a game not many. The game is mostly played in a 20 yard box.
A 4.6 40 guy who catches a pass behind a 4.4 40 guy who bits on the route will not catch the 4.6 guy if he only has 20 yards to go and needs to make up 5 yards....... Speed in the 40 is way over rated and the winners in the NFL know this and draft play makers. This just my observation that you see the same teams year after year drafting high in the draft and getting beat by team full of 3rd and 4th picks like the Seahawks....

fastest 40 time ever and he has like 2 good years? Now he can barely stay on the roster. It's about a lot more than speed in a 40-yard dash. And football speed is a lot different than 40-yard dash speed.

Yes, but we still love to talk about Jacoby being so fast.

It really doesn't matter though. Clowney is a DE. He is also a freak of an athlete and runs a fast 40. But obviously you don't have to run 40 yds really fast as a DE.

It's freakish that he ran such a good time. That's incredible. He would beat about 98% of the posters on this board in a foot race. The problem is that a 40 yard dash itself has nothing at all to do with him being a good defensive end. His 10 yard split can indicate his jump off the ball, but if Clowney ever has to run 40 yards in a straight line down the field to catch a WR, RB, or QB it's because there was some kind of blown assignment. We all saw him do just that once or twice in his high school tape. Again, not bashing him. He's a freak athlete, but I didn't have to know his 40 time to see that he was one of the best pure athletes out there.

right, I guess teams should not look past a receiver or back that runs a 4.9 40

Not a clown fan, but for a pass rusher speed in the 40 won't hurt. His poor showing in the bench press can be corrected.

40 time only matters if you know how to use that speed...
