Clemson helmets, size matters!

Nov 14, 2022, 8:28 AM

Not the best quality picture but look at the size of the Paw on this old helmet. I love the size.

Is it me or is the Paw significantly bigger than the current size Paw?

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Paw is probably the same size, helmet is smaller, not as

much brain padding as current ones?

(And the paw not being at 1 pm is just WRONG looking!)

Paw is not at 1 o'clock ... unless they were supposed

Nov 14, 2022, 10:25 AM

to be at 12 o'clock so that the illusion of 1 o'clock occurs with their heads tilted forward.

"When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Saviour. He is well-taught who learns these two lessons." -John Newton

Here's two other pictures . . .

Nov 14, 2022, 11:01 AM

. . . one of them is a different style/shape, too.

It think the one you posted IS bigger than the current one. I don't just think it's the difference between helmet sizes today vs. then - although I think that is a factor as well. I think it's both/and the helmet size AND the tiger paw size.

The other picture I posted is the newer (current) style of the paw - and looks like it may be even bigger than the picture you posted - though from the angle it's hard to be sure.

That first pic CAN'T be right. TNet authorities say the Hill

Nov 14, 2022, 1:02 PM

was FULL in the 'old days". The Hill in that picture is just about EMPTY! Somebody's got some "splainin'" to do!

:)

Well, that depends . . .

Nov 14, 2022, 1:33 PM

. . . on whether you're talking about the OLD old days, or the NEW old days. No one has ever argued that The Hill was full in the 60's and early-to-mid 70's. It's the early 1980's up until fairly recently that folks are arguing about. And they're right.

Ok so I can speak to the Hill in the mid to late 60’s. I was in elementary school and always allowed to take a friend when we went to the Clemson games. My parents sat in the stands and the kids sat on the hill for $.50 admission. Would always come home with grass stained pants from all the shenanigans going on. Had a blast. We would meet my parents back at the car after the game and finish the KFC tailgate meal. ?

I like the streamlined one from 1939 - 1941.

Only a single white stripe back then. Maybe had to make it smaller for the additional two purple stripes.

I want to say those helmets actually had the paw made into the plastic shell if I remember correctly. Now they are stickers? Maybe it has to fit in an area away from the face mask and screws and different edges to get a good stick. I like the size Dabo restored after Bowden had shrunk the paw to almost smaller than the Nike swoosh on the jersey.
