Texas could be planning to make a run at Tanner or Holbrook

A Gamcock co-worker who usually knows what is going on with the chickens mentioned this on Friday. His attitude is why would anyone want to go to Texas with all SCar has. I laughed and said, 'The Money'. The chickens are not concerned, cause they think Holbrook=Tanner.
I really don't care, because what happens at SCar will not fix our problems. Only Jack can do that.

But you'd have to pick one and HOPE he turns out as well as Tanner. Just bacause you can get anyone, like you say, that won't automatically make them successfull.

Texas just resigned Garrido for a couple more years, but he is making nearly double what Tanner is, so the money is there in Texas

Texas... obviously they just resigned Augie.............
Honestly... think it would take a really "special" deal to get Tanner or Holbrook. I am talking about more than just $$ here... Both coaches seemt to be comfortable in Columbia, and both are making a very nice living..... Holbrook rumored to be close to $300k (for an assistant baseball coash!!.) Tanner is pulling down about $750 with incentives.
Tanners wife has family in columbia and Holbrook has young children that have been integrated into the school system.... BUT, Holbrook has to aspire to a major HC job so he may get a pay day he cant ingnore.?? But, what BIG TIMe program is lookiing for a head coach now??

Holbrooks base salary was raised to $176000 after he turned down Tennessee. His bonuses amount to less than $20,000 even if he hits all of them. Way less than $300,000. His wife is from the area and from what I understand they have a special needs son and do not want to relocate. But, if something isn't formalized for Holbrook as a coach in waiting with a reasonable time line, they aren't going to swat away big money forever. Texas would make the Tennessee offer seem like chump change if they decided Holbrook was who they wanted. $176k is good money if you can get it, but not the kind of money that can permanently secure the future for you and your children. At some point very soon, USC is going have to figure out how to move Ray towards the AD position or lose Holbrook to another school. Either way, one or the other will not be on their sideline within a few years.

I have a relative who lived in Holbrook's old neighborhood. He just moved out and got a house on Lake Murray. His wife is from Columbia. I don't think one of their sons is special needs but one did have cancer a few years ago.
SCAR started winning national championships a year or two after Holbrook got there so he has obviously made a difference. Prior to SCAR he was at UNC when they were going to Omaha regularly and I think they played in the championship series once or twice while he was there.
Holbrook is a UNC grad so he's an ACC guy. Those on this board rhetorically asking "who is there to go get if Leggett is fired", well the number one choice should be Holbrook. I have met him and he's a very nice guy; also his wife is pretty hot.

Holbrook would be my first choice if anything was to happen with Leggett, but I assume that Holbrook will have his own head coaching gig long before that happens. And I'm not one looking for Leggett to leave. As far as Holbrooks son was concerned I just knew their were some issues and they were comfortable with the arrangements in Columbia where they have family support available in addition to whatever resources the city has. Palmetto Richland has a top flight peds oncology department so I can see why someone with a child with a history of cancer would be hesitant to move.
UNC played in back to back championships while he was there. He's been in 5 CWS finals in the last seven years. Incredible.

Brad, I just checked your info because I didn't think any college baseball coach made $1.6 million (double Tanner's salary). Garrido makes $900,000 and he is the winningest coach in NCAA Division 1. Tanner may get bumped to $900,000 if he wins a 3rd, so I'm not sure what will get Tanner out of Columbia because it is unlikely to be a money issue.
Here is a c/p from a Texas article written in 2012:
Compare that to Longhorns’ baseball head coach Augie Garrido’s $900,000 salary. Garrido, the all-time winningest college baseball coach in NCAA Division I, has won seven regular season conference crowns since taking over at Texas in 1998 and four Big 12 tournament titles. In his 14 years in charge of the Longhorns baseball program, he has made seven College World Series appearances and won national championships in 2002 and 2005, winning national coach of the year awards in each of those years.

Don't think it's about money with Tanner.
He makes a lot of money- and I don't see him leaving to try to be a baseball coach for another 5 years for a little bit more money.
South Carolina would match any offer he received if he was really interested in another job.

his wife's family is in Columbia.
His home for 15 years now has been in Columbia where he's a legend.
He makes a lot of money as one of thei highest paid coaches in college baseball- and if he wanted more- he'd get it in about 10 mins.

Wouldn't be much of a pay increase, and whatever increase there is would be negated by the higher cost of living in Austin compared to Cola. I know Austin is a bit above the US average for CoL, most bigger cities in Texas are. Cola (and most of SC) is pretty far below the US average, with obvious exceptions (immediate suburbs of Greenville, the coastal cities). Not sure how much more the CoL of Austin is than Cola, but that could be a difference as well. I know that is why my parents want to retire to SC. For 300k, they can get a house with the same square footage as our current one in PA at about 60% the price. CoL is definitely something to consider when taking a new job or moving.

regarding Tanner.
Coach Tanner is one of the highest paid baseball coaches in the country - easily - and if it's only about money- we'd gladly and easily make him the highest paid if that's what mattered.
He has a brand new stadium that could be expanded if he wanted - and has obviously reached the top in college baseball.
Tanner's coaching baseball days will be at South Carolina.
Chad is like any other great assistant- if a great job came along, he'd of course have to consider it.

there is no reason to do so unless there is a significant reason to do it.
He makes $650,000 a year- and has received nice raises ($100,000 in 2010) in the last 2 years.
Since the stadium was built, he hasn't even remotely flirted with another school.

Might be time to give Holbrook the dreaded head coach in waiting tag to keep him.

I think there is truth to it- but Hyman doesn't believe in Head coach in waiting deals- at least formally.
I think Tanner would like to eventually be in administration. But no idea when. I don't see that right now.
What most people don't know is that Coach Tanner is absolutely loved by other folks in the athletic department - from coaches to office staff. He has a history of taking the time to really talk to folks - from the higher ups- to the support staff.
One of Ellis Johnson's favorite people in Ray Tanner. Ellis even tweeted the other day about pulling for Ray and South Carolina.
I think we'd love to have Chad as head coach. I know we have tried hard to hang on to him. But if leaves for another school in the meantime, I think we'd try to hire him back when Ray decides he wants to do something else.

I've seen their parties at the hoodlands. Wouldn't surprise me a bit (although it would surprise me if there were no girls involved). They might love each other as much as two heterosexual men could possibly love each other.

Like I said, it would surprise me if there were no girls involved in the bath. Their girl to guy ratios are fairly ridiculous. I would say at least 5+ to 1 during football season.
