Terry Don Philiips stayed on as AD...

Would he have let Brad Brownell go past that 7th or 8th season before the sweet sixteen season or even till now?
He was the one that hired Brad Brownell. but he also hired Oliver Purnell before, and hired Brad to keep the program at the same level. Would think he would have had more pressure than DRad?
Remember also was the one that let Tommy Bowdan go and really think if DRad was here he would have let Tommy Bowdan stay on because of how he handled Brad later on, and his history of keeping mediocre coaches at Ga Tech.
Interesting philosophies on ADs...

Man that’s a tough question because we are 4-5 years past the 7-8 you are talking about and we know how that has gone. I would like to think something would have been changed or made better. I really do not get the contract extensions. Not sure when and how many he has had but dang you are basically saying keep doing what you are doing.

TDP didn't fire Dabo after a 6-7 campaign, and football has WAY higher expectations than men's BB.
This year -- I'm not so sure and I can see both arguments (I mean, who couldn't, especially if you frequent the boards at this point).
However, my question is...who are you bringing in if you fire BB?
Like it or not, dude has left his mark on Clemson Men's BB.
--Beat UNC at their house (NO OTHER COACH DID THIS) --Sweet 16 Appearance (First time since 1997) --Winningest Coach of All Time (Yes, I know it's not a tall mountain but he's at the top)
Again, I definitely can understand the frustrations here -- he's basically the Tommy Bowden of BB but with a Sweet 16 (so NY6 in Football Equivalent?).
I just want to hear who they actually would consider and not just "anyone" or some outlandish claims like a Rick Barnes return, taking a chance on a Bruce Pearl-type figure just for the hype, or luring Jay Wright from Villanova [or insert some big-name coach at a well-known basketball school because...well, we're Clemson].
My guess is if there's not a sure thing or something that is going to resonate/gas up the fanbase, outside of the Clemson BB team nose-diving or major fan support loss, he probably gets one more year.

Mendeve , I know. Butchered his name but Colorado st coach. @nctigs talks about him and I have to agree, it's very impressive. And he's been around awhile so runs a clean program.

JDS you have clueless all to your self. Never any actual data to back up your need to be the new lead apologists for Brownell.

It’s well known TDP handpicked Coach Swinney and both have acknowledged many times they would’ve gone down together if it didn’t work.
If you give someone as much time as Brownell has been given then the 3 accomplishments you gave as an example is pitiful.

who are you going to hire is always the question I never get when folks talk about coaching changes. My guess is we’ll hire the best candidate who is willing to come here. And it’s not like Neff has to hire Phil Jackson to exactly energize the program more than it is now.
The one thing we know is how far Brad will take us. Being scared of what someone new will do is not a reason to accept the way it is now

Dabo's 6-7 season was in year 2 as Clemson's head coach, was one year removed from a trip to the ACC championship, and would have been the start of his way out the door if he didn't turn things around quickly in 2011.
Dabo also spent half of the 2010 season with his best offensive player for that season (Andre Ellington) on the sidelines due to injury.
Dabo also had the #1 WR class in the country committed for 2011 with Nuk Hopkins returning as a sophomore who had come on near the end of the season. He was turning his biggest weakness from 2011 into a major strength.
Dabo also had a major staff change in the offseason, which is something that commonly buys a football coach at least one extra season.
The question about Brownell's situation would be more like if a Clemson football coach went 7-5 or 8-4 for 7 seasons and then dropped to 6-7 with no recruits on the horizon to hint at a marked change in results.

Terry Don probably doesn’t give Brownell a $5 million buyout after the NIT in year 4 handcuffing us to him financially. That is the biggest blunder since it forced us to keep him after years 5 and 6 when he should have been fired for sure.
I’d also be curious how the year end discussion goes after year 3 when the team completely quit. That was DRad’s first full year so he was probably in evaluation mode

The ADs answer to the BOT and there is a fine line for pressuring a coach to win or get fired and maintaining integrity in their approach to recruiting and running an honest program. I think our BOT value running a clean program vs winning at all costs. I think there is a real amount of apathy toward BBall overall from the University community so they are very patient with a basketball coach compared to Football.
Clemson is a great spot for a coach to take advantage of that patience....a little Dabo'in would make some coach a legend in BBall. Heck most of you look at OP that way and he was not a "good" coach but he got some flash and that is all anyone remembers. But he still did not move the bar for the program.
It may be past the window of opportunity for Brownell considering how long he has already been coach, but if he cannot change himself to recruit better he surely needs to hire a Dabo type personality that brings in the players.
An interesting analogy is the FSU program. Their Head Coach has always bee a great recruiter but is not as good in scheming game plans and game management. He had talent but they were still up and down. He goes out and hires an older assistant and since then that older guy runs the timeouts and gives the players their assignments. The Head Coach steps back away. Interesting situation.
Brownell needs some of that.
