Sweet cornbread.

My wife straightened my poor memory out. She grew up in Tennessee and Louisiana. She told me that in her house sweet cornbread was dessert. It was never served with the main meal. The main meal either had corn bread or hoecake bread. And, she also was told the origin of hoecake bread was the fact that farmers used a hoe and cooked it over an open fire.
And, while we're talking about food, has anyone ever read the book by Lewis Grizzard on southern culture entitled, "If you didn't want grits why'd you order breakfast?"?

My family has always cooked sweet cornbread and we’re as southern as they come.
Y’all can say whatever you want ‘cause I don’t care…that’s how I like it. That’s how I make it.

Don’t listen to these fools, my family has been in LOWER state SC since 1695 and we eat sweet cornbread, but I don’t turn down salty cornbread either. The people on here that are whining about sweet corn bread either are compensating for only being 3rd generation southerners, or don’t make their chili spicy enough to need sweet cornbread.

In the South we do not put sweet in our cornbread or avocado on our toast.

It’s the best for soppin’ up pot liquor after the turnip greens is done et up.Don’t fall apart before you can get it to your mouth - and still has a little crunch to it. Hold a piece of it over your head and your tongue will slap your brains out trying to get to it.

I see what's going on here. Bret just trying to sow dissension within the ranks with a week to go. Trying to make you turn on each other. Don't fall for it.

Dadgummit! You must be Jethro Gibbs.

I've been a sleeper cell for over 20 years. I joined 8/31/03 and have spent 20 years lulling y'all into a false sense of security. Now, I've got my orders to respond to an innocuous post and use it to destroy the entire message board.
But, dadgummit, you're just to danged smart to fall for my scheming and conniving.
Luckily I'm a member of 23 other boards of other schools. They can't all be as smart as you.

Well, now that I have that figured out I am confident that is a picture of you on the grassy knoll...
And for the record, my Mom's cornbread recipe calls for just enough sugar to add a little flavor but not to push it to the point of sweetness. Best cornbread in the world. Anyone whose recipe starts with cornbread in a box with "Jiffy" or any other name on it is disqualified from the discussion.
