Sports you followed as a youngster that are now almost irrelevant...

For a date reference, I'm 66, HS & college was in the 70's.
Boxing was huge back then. The Heavyweight division was the best ever... Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, Holmes. The championship bouts were international events. Before ESPN and PPV and all that, you had the 3 networks. Usually your only chance to see these fights was a replay on The Wide World of Sports a few weeks later. Gomez, Monzon, Duran, etc in the lighter divisions. It was "cant miss TV". The golden age of boxing. Now I have no clue who is who, and haven't for many years.
I used to follow drag racing closely, and most of my buddies did, too. Big Daddy Don Garlits. The divisions like Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Roadsters. Not much NHRA on TV then, so you bought mags like Hot Rod Magazine and others I can't remember. And you put up the posters on your bedroom wall. It just seems like it was a big deal back then...
And I could be wrong, but I think the Olympic Sports were followed more closely. Maybe just because I was a sports freak and at that impressionable age. I guess nowadays, it appears the NFL & NBA dominate all sports coverage and talk shows.
I'm sure NASCAR will be up there for a lot of folks, but I was never a big fan.

Well for me it would be nascar. I started off a Bobby Allison fan then Davey Allison then when he died Mark Martin. Then my job had me working a lot of Sundays and when Mark Martin retired I just never picked up another driver. Plus now it seems they have changed so much it’s not recognizable to me anymore so I haven’t been interested in a decade or more.

Hagler, Leonard, Duran, Hearns, in that order, for me.
Duran permanently tarnished his legacy with the "No Mas" fight. It was so completely out of character for him, and his image never recovered.
The first round of Hagler / Hearns is the best boxing round of any fight in any weight class that I have ever seen.
Leonard was a great fighter, but it was obvious that the boxing networks at the time were trying to build him up to be even greater than he actually was. Ratings, ratings ratings. Everyone was searching for the next Ali, in any weight class, and they tried to anoint Leonard as such.
Hearns to me was an anomaly. He must have had hydrogen for bones, to be as tall as he was and still make lower weight classes. He was a good fighter, but my memory of him will always be him dancing like a puppet with the strings cut, just before Hagler took him out.

plentiful as cheap Rolexes on a New York City street corner. And, fighters started ducking other fighters. Even Sugar Ray Leonard, great as he was, ducked Marvin Hagler until he figured Hagler was old enough, and had lost enough skills that he could handle him. He was right, barely.
And, the Heavyweight division just lost all talent once you got past the Mike Tyson era.

Definitely boxing…..but I’ll still go out of my way to watch high level boxing.
One of my favorites from back in the day was Ernie Shavers. If he landed a bomb the night was over. He was Tyson before Tyson.
I’m a big Terence Crawford fan. Highly skilled but likes to fight and I love that he’s mean. He’s had a couple of fights where I swear he carried the opponent extra rounds just to a punish him.

actually cars similar to ones you could buy off the showroom floors. Nowadays, all the bodies are forced to be the same, with only decal differences between brands.
There are no real "personalities" in it anymore either. The closest thing is Kyle Busch.

Unfortunately one sport that is about to be irrelevant is college football. Four postseason games on top of a regular season schedule?? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

NASCAR made the mistake that all professional sports are making now. They priced themselves out of the market. The fan base used to be your average everyday guy and now prices are for the upper middle to upper tax brackets. Maybe they make just as much money now without the hassle of full stands at race tracks.

I would agree with the boxing. But I cannot watch golf these days. Maybe a little of each of the majors, but week to week? Not a chance. All they seem to care about these days is how far can he hit it? Launch angel? Ball speed? Apex? WGAS. But like they say, "They don't show bunts on Sportcenter". What I want to know is can the guy play? It was far better entertainment to watch guys like Ballesteros and Tiger. They can hit it all over the planet and still shoot 65!

I wouldn’t say tennis is “irrelevant” but its popularity has certainly waned, at least in the United States.

Tennis and Boxing. Tennis was huge in the 70’s, 80’s and into the 90’s. Lot of American stars. Couldn’t wait to watch Wimbledon July4th weekend. Really just know of Federer, Joker, and Nadal now. Back in the day it was Ashe, Connors, Borg, Tanner, Nastase, McEnroe, Lendl, Wilander, Edberg, Becker. Later it was Sampras, Courier, Chang, Courier, Agassi.

Definitely was WCW wrestling or the NWA. Watch cartoons and then on to wrestling. Never liked WWE though. I tried. I would go back to saying baseball, boxing, tennis and billards. My father was a major influence on the last one. He toured with Brunswick for a couple years and had pictures of him playing Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats, among others.
