Some ole notes made about Woody Hayes..

8

Aug 16, 2023, 5:39 PM

* He coached 27 years (1951-1978).
* Record of: (205/61/10).
* Win 3 Battues (1954, 1957, 1968).
* Won 13 BiG Titles.
* Died: Age 74.
* Eulogy given by: President Nixon.
* Hated to lose.
* Visited Troops in Vietnam War Zone.
* Spoke at Clemson after punch & packed IPTAY meetings.

A minister said at funeral that Woody’s life should not be looked upon solely as scrambled incidents: such as, Side line markers destroyed, disassembled caps, stomped watches & spectacles, chair tosses..

OR 5 seconds of outrage at end of the 1968 Gator Bowl loss to Clemson!

Miss the ole Coach after seeing so many weak-kneed & pansy coaches today~

Woody also punched the Ohio State player who tried to intervene at the Gator Bowl.

and said nothing about it. I bet they chatted after the game and decided that was their story and they're sticking to it.

Woody lived a life to be admired. I really respect what Woody accomplished in his career and have absolutely no issues to his hard nosed approach to coaching. However, Woody was out of control his last few years. He also punched an ABC camera mam about year before the Clemson incident.

I agree that Woody was out of control. OSU kept him around too long, knowing it was happening.

I remember Lou Holtz once saying

That he would be remembered the same is his former Mentor Woody Hayes, for ending his career with a fight against Clemson.

He was unpopular with admin, as they claimed he had too much power, and got his way with the professors making sure his players did not fail...

Don't care how many games He won. IMHO there should be no place in college sports for the likes on Woody Hayes and Bobby Knight.

Respected and by most accounts well liked by his players.

Also the forefront of integration of african-american players and coaches by a major program. Recruiting and starting african americans in larger numbers than his predecessors and others. IIRC, the first black coach on woody's staff came the same year that Clemson had their first black student athlete ever.

He got fired as he should have for the punch, but that's not the full story.

I have met many players who played for him. He was a tough hard nosed coach but to a man they all loved him. As far as speaking I know he called charlie bauman (the Gator Bowl slugee) during spring ball to ask how he was doing but never apologized that I have ever heard. I have family that went to Oh St (not proud of that). I find it typical of the school the football building is named for Woody. They are win at all costs and that they are somehow better than all the rest of us. They are not ND arrogant but theirs is a close second.

Wait, I want to make sure I read that correctly...

Woody Hayes spoke at a Clemson IPTAY meeting, after the punch?

Was this years later, or was he in a disguise?

I never knew this, and frankly shocked he could get out of Clemson alive, much less even get in.
