It helps to read more than just the headline.

The US Department of Energy has assessed that the Covid-19 pandemic most likely came from a laboratory leak in China, according to a newly updated classified intelligence report.

Two sources said that the Department of Energy assessed in the intelligence report that it had “low confidence” the Covid-19 virus accidentally escaped from a lab in Wuhan.

Intelligence agencies can make assessments with either low, medium or high confidence. A low confidence assessment generally means that the information obtained is not reliable enough or is too fragmented to make a more definitive analytic judgment or that there is not enough information available to draw a more robust conclusion.
The truth is they still don't know where it came from. Better luck next time!

why make the assessment?

Drips and drabs.

"The Space Force Threat Assment Office has released a statement that the recent spate of UFOs over the US and other nations possibly flew out of Muricelago's butt, but the spokesunit said they were warning that there was low confidence that this is what actually happened as it may have been something else."

Well, that covers one possibility.

The Department of Energy didn't release a statement.

This is coming from a leaked classified report.

The reason they make an assessment is because they have to. They continue to try to determine the source of the virus and that is their most recent assessment and confidence in that assessment, which still amounts to "we don't know."

In the end, it doesn't really matter where the virus came from unless you want to make political hay out of it. And as time goes by we're going to have better understanding of the nature of the virus, which may contradict earlier beliefs. That's how science works and it doesn't mean those earlier beliefs are lies.

Of course it matters.

Natural virus, isolated for study at Wuhan lab, accidentally released ….

… likely from human error. I can buy that.

Suggesting man-made virus intentionally released is a stretch based on various sources and China’s own response which created both societal and economic hardship in China. If China has a pre-devolved vaccine in large quantities, then the plot thickens.

Do you see a definitive statement in the quote...

that he could be right/wrong about?

“Ari, if you look at the virologists, not the people who want to politicalize this, look at the virologists who actually know about evolutionary virology and biology, they tell you it’s much, much more likely this was a natural evolution from an animal, likely a bat to another intermediate host, to a human. Until you know for sure, you have to leave open all possibilities. That’s where something like the lab leak type of a hypothesis comes about. You can’t rule it out right now, but if you look at the evidence, namely the historical and other evidence, it’s more likely one than the other. It’s more likely it’s a natural outbreak from an animal, although we must keep all possibilities open.”
