Serious baseball dilemma.

May 14, 2012, 10:29 PM

Take or swing away on a 3-0 pitch? It may be one of the best pitches to hit a batter will see all game. I'm torn on this one. Inquiring minds want to know.

I think it is necessary to give certain hitters the green light from time to time and not be soooo predictable. You are right, most times the 3-0 is grooved right down the middle.

It depends on the situation, but most of the time you take.

Hitting is so tough that even with good pitches you will make outs. You take 3-0, and will still see a good pitch to hit on 3-1. I would give the greenlight to swing on 3-0 if it were a situation where there was a man on 3rd with 2outs and your best hitter was up in a game where you were down 1 run, tied, or leading. If you were trailing by more than a run late in the game you play for the walk on 3-0 bc youre objective is baserunners, not just hits. There are other 3-0 greenlight scenarios, but thats the most obvious one.

I think a big problem is too many guys swing at 3-1 pitches. If Ive got a 9 hole guy 3-0, hes getting two take signs in a row before he can swing at 3-2. You figure doing that forces the pitcher to throw three strikes in a row after going 3-0. Im trying to get him to walk and get back to the top of the order with atleast a man on. I know that 2-0, 3-1, and 3-0 are considered hitters counts bc you sit fastball, but the odds are still in the favor of the defense getting you out.

TAKE. TAKE. TAKE.
And when the guy before you walks, TAKE THE FIRST PITCH THEN.
And if you're pitching and have the count at 0-2 or 1-2, DON'T THROW A STRIKE.
Sorry, just some of my pet peeves.

That 3-0 pitch is different than a 3-1. At 3-0, if a pitcher

doesn't benefit from a walk, getting that first strike is big, so there's a lot more pressure to get it started. At 3-1, the pitcher's got some juice from just having thrown a strike. I know it's a crapshoot to an extent with the bat on any swing, but it seems like I see way too many pitches just grooved right down Main Street, and too many good hitters watching the parade go by instead of swinging at a cream puff on a stick.

I say swing away. Experience suggests that way more often than not it's a strike right down the middle.

Take - always. What if the batter swings and accidently

hits a homerun? Then what are you going to do? That's a rally killer there...

:)

Or, hits a double ... those are more exciting.

They are going to get the automatic strike on anything close

May 15, 2012, 9:20 AM

so take the pitch. The umps have taken that hitters count and given it back to the pitcher.

Seems like no college ump is going to walk someone on 4 pitches and they aren't going to ring someone up on 3. I hate it, but it is what it is.
