Defense 2012

Jun 22, 2012, 10:05 AM

I am sure Veneables is a great coordinator. He was a great hire by Dabo. There are a lot of expectations for he and his defense to strenghten our team. We know his scheme will be different. Will he be enough to change our mental toughness and make us a bone crushing defense that others will fear? Will we have the agressivness of an Alabama or other teams at that level? What is the opinion of T Netters?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

fewer reads means quicker decisions which is good.

Jun 22, 2012, 10:11 AM

he still can't tackle for them, but i prefer an aggressive player who is freed to think less and play more.

Rome wasn't built in a day

I think you'll see big improvements in the defense this year, but I don't think they'll be dominant. They'll be dependable and they'll get stops when it really counts. With an offense like ours that is going to force them to be on the field a TON, that's all you can really ask for.

Re: Rome wasn't built in a day

Jun 22, 2012, 10:26 AM

I agree. I realize the DC can't make the tackles, but I just hope he puts a little fire in them. The systems should provide them the opportunity to play free. We need them to be dependable and just make the opponents earn and work for every point and the offense should be able to take care of the rest. Although I hope that in the long term he builds a culture among the defensive players that they take every gain against them personally and just make the opponents pay on every attempt. We need that mental toughness and pride through out the whole team. We have the athletic ability at almost every position. I often think that may have been Danny Ford's strong point, just the toughness that he pounded into his teams.

He certainly can't be worse than Steele. But with Steele's fundamentals (or lack thereof) I expect he will need at least 2 years.

I think you will see marked improvement from the LB's for sure, more reactionary. Hopefully the Dline gels quickly, I believe the corners and safeties will be fine with the experience they are getting going against our Offense. The big question for me is, can we get push up front from the Dline? From the detail BV was showing in the spring practices and his intensity, I think it will be a much better product on the D side. It will also be a big help that the DC isn't puking and passing out on the sidelines on gameday! Doesn't instill confidence in your players!!!;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Venables seems to think like Chad Morris

Jun 22, 2012, 10:22 AM

Simplicity is the key. Teach great fundamentals and let the players think less and play more. Once you have their minds clear of too many things then they will execute the little thing, like tackling, wrapping up, etc much better.

That being said we lose a lot of talent on the DL from last year and are thin at DE. It'll be a struggle early on as we get the young players experience, especially playing Auburn so early but I expect the D to improve as the year goes on

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats my thought too

Jun 22, 2012, 10:28 AM

Time and again you see simplified schemes do well in college. It's not like these kids have more time than they did in high school to learn complicated schemes. If anything, it might be less. We have the athletes on both sides of the ball who can make plays if schemes don't get in their way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's very important that your coordinator recognizes

Jun 22, 2012, 10:36 AM

tendencies in the opponent and adjusts for them, too. I think KS tried to fit his square peg into a round hole sometimes. Case in point: GT. I could be dead wrong, but KS seemed too arrogant to allow for a completely different approach to an unusual opponent. Seems to me, he took the attitude "my system will work against any offense as long as the players make the right reads and do their jobs."

All I ask of the D this year is to get off the field

Jun 22, 2012, 10:23 AM

when we've got 'em in 3rd-and-long on a consistent basis. It drove me nuts all last year when we'd give up a big play on 3rd-and-long. You could see the energy leave the D and a score was practically inevitable.

Agreed. If the defense holds on 3rd and longs and the offense converts on 3rd and shorts, I'll be one happy camper.

I'll second that. Last year's problems in a nutshell.+1.***

That, too. Failure to convert short yardage on O has been frustrating for too long.

3rd and long failue and get off the field are not the same

Jun 22, 2012, 11:12 AM [ in reply to All I ask of the D this year is to get off the field ]

Steele had a style that was more man coverage / read react up front (that did not get to the QB mind you). Leads to more big plays without good LB play, which is what we got. From what I understand about BV is that LBs are still the key (he has a little more to work with than Steele did) but more of a zone secondary and attacking upfront. I am thinking less big plays and more 7 or 8 play drives that fizzle out at mid field. The difference against a team like Ga Tech is that in Steele's system we have 3 guys trying to figure out if the ball was handed off to the FB before reacting. FOr BV, it is one guy stuffing the FB and the other two each attacking their preset assignments.

Of course, I may be full of ####

Jun 22, 2012, 11:18 AM

If you are giving up 7-10 a game, you win almost every game. Hell if we give up 17-20, with our O and we win them all. But a dominate D give the O the short field all day. I loved through the Woody years and the Kirkland years, and I will take that D every day of teh week

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Auburn showed that a very good, but not great defense can

Jun 22, 2012, 10:32 AM

win if you have an explosive offense playing fast. We don't have to take a huge step forward to get to that level.

Re: Defense 2012

Jun 22, 2012, 10:43 AM

Good points on here...I read one that mentioned just being dependable. This is key, especially regarding 3rd down situations. How many times under Steele and Koening (sp?) did we give up the 3rd down situations. Cut those in half, and the D will be fine.

Another good point is that this D will be on the field a lot. The Offense will score quickly and often, meaning the D has to be on the field most of the game. If they can be reliable, we'll have a great season. I think with this O and all the weapons, the D just needs to be above average for us to have a great season. Once the D in dominant, in addition to a high powered O, watch out!

Does anyone know if there is talk of using a 3-4 scheme? Seems like we have questions on the D-Line, and lots of talent at LB...is it just me or would having 4 of those LBs on the field make more sense than just 3?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And next season we'll have some DEs who can play OLB

Jun 22, 2012, 10:45 AM

in the 3-4, as well. That may be when we start seeing a lot more 3-4.

Jun 22, 2012, 11:02 AM [ in reply to Re: Defense 2012 ]

From what I understand about BV's D, he will use a 3-4 from time to time. It's not strictly a 4-3 every down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For a 3-4 you need an dominate DT to force a double team

Jun 22, 2012, 11:10 AM [ in reply to Re: Defense 2012 ]

We don't have that this year and I believe the 4-3 is fine with the athletes we have and are bringing in. Though I do believe that Venables will run a little 3-4 from time to time

If we got a kid like Adams to come, you go 3-4 and crush the run with our young LB. Still have nightmares about Mount Cody

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we are on the verge of having a great defense.

Jun 22, 2012, 11:04 AM

I think our defense will be improved this year, simply due to the addition of Venebles. I think LB play will be greatly improved under him, and I expect that to make a significant difference in the overall result. We may be a bit thin in some spots, but hopefully some young'uns will step up. I don't know if we'll quite be there this year, but we should be better.
