RJ Mickens very high on Klubnick in an article on TCI …

3

Aug 21, 2023, 2:29 PM

… this sort of praise should probably carry more weight than normal coach speak.

Coaches are in the business of building up their players and generally anything they say is coming to us through a filter of orange colored positivity.

For a veteran Clemson defensive back (whose play is measured against Cade every day) to insist that Cade Klubnick is the best QB in the ACC seems like a particularly encouraging statement given that it must mean Klubnick is having a great deal of success against our DBs.

I don’t recall any of this kind of talk coming from our defenders last fall describing DJ.

This is the article I read that really has me concerned about our defense under Wes Goodwin. This never would’ve happened under Brent. Never!

Well if history repeats itself Dabos defensive guy will have a top 5 defense in year 2 lol.

Im worried though im really not a fan of Goodwins bend but dont break mentality, im hoping that he lets yhe front 7 get busy and be disruptive again now that the defense shouldnt have to win the game (with help from shipley)

Brent’s first season was not all that great.

Aug 21, 2023, 8:13 PM [ in reply to Re: RJ Mickens very high on Klubnick in an article on TCI … ]

Clemson ranked #46 nationally. Gave up 25 points per game.

Did you just compare Brent in 2012 with what he had to work with to what Wes Goodwin had in 2022? You didn’t right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes I did. I showed you a factual statistical comparison.

You need to quit trying to use Brent Venables overall Clemson career to denigrate Wes Goodwin’s rookie year.

Brent’s first season was not all that great.

He grew in the job.

Brent’s defenses had plenty of ups and downs throughout his time with Clemson.

He couldn’t figure out how to defend a shovel pass against Pitt. His guys gave up 35 points to a terrible SCAR team. Just a couple of examples.

… and Venables had great players on that 2012 defense

Vic Beasley
Grady Jarrett
Carlos Watkins
Deshawn Williams
DJ Reader
BJ Goodson
Stephone Anthony
Bashaud Breeland

As good or better than what Goodwin had last season. 13 total defensive players went to the NFL off that 2012 team!

You do realize all but Bashaud Breeland were freshman or sophomore’s that weren’t really contributing yet for Brent? All but Breland were still on our teams in 2014 and some in 2015 whenever they really contributed. Come on dude

You really are desperate to make your specious point.

Aug 21, 2023, 10:45 PM

Brent had plenty of talent his first year. You can stretch it and poke it and prod it any way you want, but it still comes out the same.

Brent’s defense ended up 46th in the nation his first season.

Wes Goodwin had the 25th ranked defense last year.

I get it … you don’t like Dabo’s choice for defensive coordinator. You think he made a mistake. That’s your privilege.

But he has not done worse than Venables to this point, in fact, he’s done bette.

You can’t change it, so you’ll just have to accept it for now.

One also has to make the point that when the offense struggled as it did, it has an impact on the defense.

Wes Will Be Better In Year Two.

I don't know many people who doesn't improve after going through "whatever it is" after doing it the first time.
Wes will be no different.
Something as simple as how he signals in the calls may be the difference; you never know.

Due West - I agree with you. BV had plenty of talent his first year!
I would also add this: "he had been a defensive play caller at Oklahoma" prior to Clemson. Wes had never done it. Never.

Like anyone; you learn and grow from failure. I wouldn't exactly call it failure for Wes - it just wasn't Great.
I look for year two to be far better than year one.

Klubnik is going to be a great one. Way too much stock is being put into Tenn game and spring game by the doubters. both games he was missing key talent and playing behind second team or beat up OLinemen.

I agree. Cade has all the tools you want in a qb. Sometimes you can have all the tools and still not work out for whatever reason, see DJ. I don’t see that happening 2 qb’s in a row. I think Cade is mentally tough. And maybe not this year But I feel Cade may get Clemson there first heisman winner ever!
