Yes, he did. But at the end of the day he was not a very honorable man but a very snide, vindictive one. Sorry, for his family though.

Disagree. I think he stuck to what he believed regardless of what his party was pushing. You don't have to like it, but he spoke from the heart, always.

McCain was a political opportunist par excellance in DC. He made a name for himself there by stabbing his conservative colleagues in the back repeatedly.
He went through a lot in his life. I respect him for that. But he is not near the top of the list of respected veterans on that score, because of how he lived his life once he was in DC. He was a petty, sad man in those DC years.

It's not that. Its more that he could not be counted on to do what he said he would do, and was always an opportunist. He was a persistent DC backstabber of the GOP. Which is the ONLY reason the Left revere this man now otherwise they'd hate him and spit in his face too just like they did all the other returning veterans.

I feel bad for you. You say "He made a name for himself there by stabbing his conservative colleagues in the back repeatedly" but never stop to ask yourself whether or not the conservatives deserved that vote. To me, "turning your back on your party" often times means sticking to your core beliefs even though the party in which you most identify with doesn't fall in line with your core beliefs. If you truly believe in a cause, why would you ever kneel to the party line? Isn't that what America is all about? Freedom of choice? How can you, as a true American, ever stand for a politician voting with a status quo that they don't believe in "because the party told me to"?? That seems contrary to every value our entire society is built on.
To me, while I didn't always agree with him, McCain was a good man. Based on your posts, you're "a good lil boy", a dog who just does what he's told with no independent thought of his own. It's certainly not too late though, if you decide to think for yourself at some point you can become a man. Until then, you sound like a coward.

Which is the conservative party? You have liberal and conservative. Always have and always will. Goes beyond the US even. The two ideologies are as old as democracy really.
So, who represents conservatives? Whoever it is, it's not John McCain.
The likes of John McCain, and his position in the GOP and in the Congressional power structure, explains EVERYTHING about why our current President is Donald Trump. Russians notwithstanding. But that can't be the message, so Russians.
Loled at the independent thought comment.

I think people are overblowing how much he didn't vote with his party...even with his "enemy" Trump, he still voted with him 83% of the time, and something like 87% of his entire career was voting with his party, which isn't all that much lower than the 91% average.

He would have been voted President. He wasn't. He was a DC opportunist who might would have become President had he maintained the honor he exhibited in the military. He didn't. That sadly taints that portion of whatever legacy he leaves.

From things I have read about him as a younger guy he was a prick and everyone hated. He was a silver spoon guy that thought the world revolved around him. He was also a poitical hack. That said its always sad when someone passes. Prayers for the family and hopefully a cure for the big C.

Winning the illegal alien vote in CA doesnt count towards the Presidency. Also, the rules are...you have to win the electoral college, not a popular vote. This is not majority rule. It's a republic. So, technically, Hillary didn't come close.

he refused an agreement for early release as a pow in Vietnam because he wanted pow's that had been there longer released first. Which in turn made his misery as a pow last 5 1/2 years, two of which were in solitary confinement. he was so badly brutalized his arms were permanently damaged.

Clempson93, You are clearly a bitter man because you think voting exactly on party lines is how matters are handled! Frankly you have no idea of the example of standing upon his underlying convictions regarding America as a whole. Clearly constructive criticism is reasonable, but your attitude is beyond decent.

Met Lindsey Graham at the gym the other week in Greenville. I was honestly shocked at how small he was. Must have been a photo op for him.

and found him to be a hypocrite when it comes to words versus actions, but certainly respect the man for his decades of service to our country.
Thoughts and prayers for his family.

He was a liberal who stayed elected in AZ. by somehow sticking an (R) by his name. He passed and will be buried with honors I'm sure, but he often did not have the country's best interest in mind (illegal amnesty). He is a prime example of why no one should be able to serve in Washington more than 8 years.
As far as his military service, I respect and thank him for what he did as I'll assume he served the United States with honor.

But the trash in this thread shows what the GOP has really become. I will enjoy watching it’s continued demise.

I’m with you Alex. A man has passed and people can’t put politics aside. Whether you agreed with him or not he was a man of character. If you are so polarized by politics you can’t keep your mouth shut in times like this, I feel very sorry for you

Some persons herein have no character themselves based upon the poor example they set by their self serving political comments which is especially sad considering what McCain’s colleagues and actual opponents have to say in honor of his legacy as an American.
It is a sad circumstance when posters have no dignity toward an American who ultimately wanted what he believed served his country despite political differences. McCain’s family would be deeply offended by some ill considered words from posts in this thread. Put your personal commentary aside and mourn the passing of a victim of a horrid disease if nothing else.

Maybe this whole thread should have been posted in the Politics and Religion section or the Amphitheater. Definitely not football related...
But since we are here... Lot of John McCain "was a genuine hero" talk and John McCain was a "dewsh" talk. Like Dabo always says - things aren't always as good as they seem nor are they as bad as they seem. John McCain led an extraordinary life but he had his share of baggage too (basically crapped on his first wife). He was far from perfect but also faced things that very few of us can imagine.
No doubt the next several days will be filled with tributes and breathless hero worship - is it deserved? I frankly don't know as only those that directly served/interacted with John McCain know the real story of his time in the military and as a POW. I've always given McCain the benefit of the doubt on the POW stuff and tend to believe he served as honorably as most other American POW's in those God awful circumstances. McCain's cellmate seemed to have a high opinion of McCain's service in the POW camp so who am I to dispute that? I hold all those guys in high esteem for their service and suffering.
So the majority of my judgement of John McCain is based on those factual things I can discern of the man through his very public life as a politician. In that portion of his life, I'm not particularly a fan of the man and think he is a prime example of the need for term limits. Some of the things he has done to keep POW/MIA records classified is tragic for those families who simply want to know the truth. See the following if you are interested:
https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/mccain-and-the-pow-cover-up/
In his capacity as a member and Chairman of the SASC, his rhetoric, legislative and voting record can be summed up as "there's not a conflict he doesn't want to send our military into, and there isn't a veteran or military retirement benefit he doesn't mind cutting to pay for it." Like I said, as far as McCain's political career I am/was not a fan.
I will pray for him and his family - an extraordinary life that has now ended and I truly hope he is resting in peace.

I support moderates on both sides. McCain is the only politician that I ever gave money to. I thought he was a good man. No matter whether or not you agree with his views, Clempson93’s comments are disgusting on the day he died. RIP to an honorable man.

“I like people who don’t get captured.”
Isn’t that what our $cumb@g President that you all love said about this American? A POW! The most famous draft-dodger of the modern era, our President, said this. Indefensible. You people truly are deplorables.

it was sort of a weird marriage of Pogo and Mike Judge.
Pogo: "We have met the enemy and he is us".
Mike Judge: The first 3 minutes of the movie Idiocracy....
