Quick Thoughts on a South Bend Trip

Nov 6, 2022, 9:53 PM

1. Campus is stunning.
2. People were insanely polite and friendly.
3. Stadium and atmosphere were fantastic.
4. Tailgating was way rowdier than I expected from a school perceived as staid. And basically all the tailgating occurs in one massive lot.
5. Town is meh. Large sections looked like the town that time forgot. Sort of like Anderson in the 60's. We did enjoy Sun God Brewery in Mishawaka.
6. Checked it off my bucket list. Can't imagine I'd ever go back. Between trying to line up flights so you could drive over from Chicago with others in your party on different flights and having to negotiate what seemed like 60 miles of war torn roads leaving O'Hare, it's too much trouble for me. Today my morning started at 7 am and I just got home at 9 pm. Included a drive from South Bend to Chicago, two flights, and a drive from Charleston to Columbia. Nonetheless, glad I went. I think if I went back I'd drive the 12 hours, get there in less time and get to skip TSA and Chicago traffic. And the drive would take me through the heart of bourbon country.

Or take the direct flight from Greenville to South Bend. Made all the difference, well, except for the game itself!

Agree with all your points, though, on campus, people, stadium, and town.

By the time I booked

Greenville direct wasn't an option. Columbia has directs at 6:30 am and 5:30 pm. Those just didn't suit me. Didn't want to wake at 4:30 or start the drive from O'Hare at 6 pm.

We just got home too. And I agree 100% with your comments. We did drive. Took 12 hours with a couple of stops from Easley. Aside from the game it was a great trip. And now I’ve been there, done that but I didn’t buy the t-shirt. And I don’t see myself going back either. No bad feelings, quite the contrary - my opinion of ND fans has changed for the better. But I have more things on my list that will come well before making this trip again.

In 1979 my then 9 yr old Son & I drove it from G'viille

in 12 hrs I believe, went into stadium at 5pm on the Friday stadium walk-thru with Danny Ford & team and next day we all got a victory so ride home was priceless & seemingly fast!

Thx to all of you for showing up, supporting team & giving it a go at a beautiful campus & iconic venue!

Go Tigers!

I was there in 1979 and thought the fans were great. At that time they were a little older on average and some told us they only got 3 or so game packages since alumni were more nationally spread. I hope you got to visit the Convocation Center to see the trophy cases. In 1979 it was amazing to see the 4 Horsemen, National Championship and Heisman Trophies!!

And the fans wanted to know if we could get Charlie Baughman to run by Dan Devine!

We just got back as well. Flew into midway and drove over from there. The campus was nice and the ND fans were not obnoxious. I didn’t find them as nice as A&am fans but they were fine. Definitely wouldn’t go back but glad we were able to check it off the list.

I definitely didn't get as good a meal in South Bend

Nov 6, 2022, 10:57 PM

as I got from Snow's Barbecue in Lexington, TX in 2018.

Sounds like our sentiments exactly.

We were in the next to last row, upper section corner of the endzone. The wind was cold. Campus was nice. Stadium was unimpressive. Don’t need to ever go back.

I'm with you. We had 50 yard line seats in section 110 but were up high. That wind was crazy! It honestly didn't slow down until the game was almost over. I was unimpressed with the stadium as well. They are proud of their stuff that's for sure.

I thought tailgating was blah compared to Clemson. The place looked like a landfill in the parking lots.
