Question for fans from the state of Alabama...

Apr 9, 2016, 8:04 PM

Looking for suggested route from Clemson area to Tuscaloosa that does not involve going through Atlanta or 285. Advise/suggestions appreciated.

Not from Bama, but looking like that is not feasible. Maybe

you ought to just try and hit ATL at off times. Early in the morning or late in the evening you can breeze right through there.

it's takes longer, but beautiful to go through the NC mountains, through

Walhalla, Clayton, Hiawassee, Murphy, Ocoee, Cleveland, I-75 to Chattanooga.
From there it's Interstate 59 to Bham, I-20 to Tuscaloosa.

I hate the ATL traffic bad enough to often take that route to/from Huntsville, AL to just enjoy the winding roads. Avoid if raining, or if prone to motion sickness.

^^^When I lived in B'ham AL and traveled from SC, I used the above route often when riding my motorcycle, but never in the car. Too many winding roads. Just not as much fun as on the bike. I'd recommend the other poster's suggestion of going thru ATL in the off hours (if there is such a thing).

One other suggestion is to take the lower leg of I285 (towards Augusta) to get to I20. Traffic is always better that way IMO. That's just based on my personal experience. Watch for cops though - they love to write tickets.

Georgia 20 cuts across toward Rome before you get to Atlanta, but it is really not any faster. I'd take the over the mountains route mentioned above, or just go on into 285.

I cut across TN to AL from Asheville, NC once.

Never again. Knoxville was mess. Added hours vs taking 120, however.

My only advice-

I lived in B'ham for many years.

It is 20 West, no matter if you go 285 or cut through Atl to I20 by way of 85/75.
