Once one has retired, how long does it generally take to start receiving SS payments? I know someone who is in their second month, and has not yet gotten a payment.

you sign up three months ahead of your eligible birthday, as soon as the window opens up to sign up, you should get your check that first month. My wife and I both did. If you wait until the last minute, your first payment will probably not be on time. But, the first check will include the retroactive amount, if any payments were missed.

I just signed up for mine and didn't have a problem. The application is done though your online account. It does take a few weeks to get approved, so it is a good idea to apply the three months ahead of your request date like they suggest.
