QB situation in the ACC

37

Oct 2, 2023, 11:31 AM

It feels like we have been facing nothing but "old" guys at QB in our opponents. So I wondered how the QB situation in the ACC was going to stack up in the coming years. Those schools that have been rolling with these 23/24 year old QB's are going to have an experience gap (unless they find an experienced transfer) next year. It also looks like quite a few will probably lose guys to the NFL draft. It's also quite enlightening to see how many of the current starting QB's are transfers.

By my reckoning - here is where the league stands:

FSU - Travis - 6th yr (Transfer) [0 years left]
NC State - Armstrong - 6th yr (Transfer) [0 years left]
Pitt - Jurkovec - 6th yr (2 x Transfer) [0 years left]

Syracuse - Shrader - 5th yr (Transfer) [0 years left]
Louisville - Plummer - 5th yr (2 x Transfer) [0 years left]

GT - King - 4th yr (Transfer) [RS + COVID = 2 years left]
Miami - Van Dyke - 4th yr [COVID = 1 year left]
UVA - Muskett - 4th yr (Transfer) [COVID = 1 year left]
Wake Forest - Griffis - 4th yr [RS + COVID = 2 years left]

Duke - Leonard - 3rd yr [1 year left]
UNC - Maye - 3rd yr [RS = 2 years left]

Clemson - Klubnik - 2nd yr [2 years left]
BC - Castellanos - 2nd yr (Transfer) [2 years left]
VT - Drones 2 yr (Transfer) [2 years left]

My guess is that Leonard, Maye, and probably Van Dyke all bolt for the NFL after this year. If that is the case then UNC, Duke, FSU, NC State, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, and Miami will be starting new QB's next year.

Everything I'm seeing tells me Clemson is going to be well situated with an experienced QB for the next couple of years. We have a young team getting a lot of playing time this year which I think bodes well to once again make some championship runs over the next couple of years.

That is crazy.
It raised a question about QB transfers. So I did some recon. Of the Power 5 QBs with the most yards, 12 of 15 are transfers.

Will those teams losing QBs break in first-time starters or just hit the transfer portal again?

Good question...

I guess it depends on how these teams feel about their backup QB's and what they are offering on the recruiting trail.

IMO - the portal is not a sustainable model for getting a quality/experienced QB year over year. At best the portal is a gamble because the really good QB's are usually happy starters at their current school. There is a reason most of these QBs are in the portal and its not usually because they are best player at their current school seeking a payday. Most transferring QB's are not like Caleb Williams and schools like Louisville, Pitt etc... aren't known for being top dollar NIL payouts.

I'd rather be in our situation of growing a QB behind a starter than having to rely on hitting the portal QB jackpot every other year for that key position.

A good number of those transfers are not in Yr1 in the new program or are playing sub-P5 so while 12/15 is statistically accurate, it doesn't tell the whole story. I would even add Sanders as an exception to the rule as he moved with his coach for Yr1 as was the case with Williams last year. Also, outside of USC, OR, LSU, and Oklahoma, most of these schools can't land a 5* from HS recruiting. For those wondering, Cade is 34 and DJ is 64...

Yr1 (5):

Shedeur Sanders (CO), Davis Brin (GA Southern), Haynes King (GT), Mikey Keene (Fresno St), JT Daniels (Rice)

Not Yr1 (7):
Michael Penix Jr. (WA), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Caleb Williams (USC), Dillon Gabriel (OU), Jaxson Dart (Miss), Taulia Tagovailoa (MD), Bo Nix (OR)

Not Transfer (3):
Brayden Schager (HI), Carson Beck (UGA), Brady Cook (MO)

Clemson locals have noted this as well. Interested in where Maye projects in NFL draft.***

QB play in the ACC and PAC are very good this year and no surprise those are the 2 best conferences right now.

Looking at not only the ACC QB's who will be gone next year but other good teams in general who are losing QB's Oklahoma, texas, washington, oregon, southern cal, i would mention s carolina but i said good teams. add onto that miami, unc, fsu, notre dame, duke.......Clemson should be positioned to go very far next year.

Doeren is getting the future started at NCSU. He benched Armstrong.

What in the world happened to him? He was SO good for a couple of years at UVA.

At this point, 2024 "looks" to be a significant year

We do lose some key pieces on the defensive line, but plenty of talent continually flows through the program.

With Cade/Tyler/Antonio/Stool(Betancur)/Randall/Turner and young receivers who looks like they may be ready right from the time they hit campus in Wesco & Moore. Plenty of studs at RB and I honestly think either Ship or Mafah comes back next year for another go at a championship.

The defense likely to lose Makuba & Wiggins, depends on health status and how the year goes. I see plenty of talent on the field with the young guys.

I can see 2024 being a very good year but again, that is why the play the games. I certainly had us at 5-0 at this point in season and here we are 3-2. You just never know
