Public Service Announcement - UPDATE 5 Mon ( #26 ) Phx Bound Tigers

Jan 3, 2016, 3:18 PM

1. UBER is huge in PHX , Glendale, Scottsdale areas.
2. You will also see tons of cabs...(FYI, they dont like UBER)
3. This is Mariocopa County, home of "Sherrif Joe"
4. Toughest DUI laws in the country. Minimum 2 day stay in "Tent City" and about 10K in fines 1st offense.
5. THe area is great to have a good time, it is beautiful and the bar scene and restaraunt choices are fantastic.
6. There are places for great short and long hikes within minutes that are awsome if you have time
7. Museums are great as well.
8. I do not like the Zoo ...not that great but heavily marketed
9. Talieson West the FRank LLyod Wright estate is out here and has short and long tours. If you are an engineer , you should save enough to try and squeeze that in it is great , and one of a kind.

UPDATED (added from TMail inquiries )

10. Sedona an Grand Canyon make a FULL day trip , from phoenix. You can do both in one day, I high;y recommend springing for a guided van tour (not bus) and making reservations in advance. Both are Fantastic ! Save more time for Grand Canyon than Sedona.

11. Vegas to Phx is a very doable drive but be prepared for 4 hours of absolutely nothing to even look at.

12. I have been flying in and out of PHX to east coast for 5 years, this time of year it isn't cheap without the bowl, but the airport is huge. It might be worth flying a discount airline out of the SE portion of the country and coming in from the south florida or going north to Chicago or NY and coming in that way. Just a thought.

13. Desert Botanical Gardens (i know how this sounds but kids and ladies love it! You can spend as much at 3 or 4 hours there. Some of the plants make you feel like you are on a different planet.

14. Old Town Scottsdale famous saloon "The Rusty Spur "(Grown up stop)

15. MIM great musical instrument museum (budget 90 minute to 2 hours , unless you are really into musical instrumens) They have a lot of hands on stuff.(scottsdale)

16. The "Heard Museum" in Phx Indian Museum..budget at least 2 hours , some spend a full day

17. Kids might be to bored with Talieson West the FRank LLyod Wright estate. But the guided tours have two options long and short 90 minutes or 3 3 hours, I think.

UPDATE 2

18. List of Events
http://www.collegefootballplayoff.com/events

19. Overview of the stadium and it shows the Great Lawn.
http://nebula.wsimg.com/eb6a0cbc9c3c783f77bfdd30ea14c606?AccessKeyId=8C83B2CA5B2851A646DA&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

UPDATE 3

If you decide to spend a day in Old Town would

20] get to the Scottsdale area as early as you care to get up.

21] Eat breakfast in Old Town Scottsdale

22] Lunch in a fantastic Mexican restaurant for authentic food in Old Town "The Mission" (the table side Guac is to kill for) This restaurant is an 60 year old ex- church Mission.

23] Get a selfie taken in Arizona's oldest still operating saloon "The Rusty Spur" , you will be surprised how small it is , but this is "tourist thing that you have to do. If you go in there , you will see dollar bills tacked all over the wall. They pull those down once a year and donate them to the Childrens Hospital. It would be fantastic to see a bunch of Tiger Stamped $2 Bills covering that place . (gonna post separate post on Rusty Spur)

24] There are enough Galleries, tons of boutiqes, Watering Holes, Fine Dining, Casual Dining, and a Fashion Square mall that has all the 5th avenue stores etc, the Mall is a great place to make your wives happy and it can get you a extra couple hours in the watering holes. There are some great "dive bars" if that is your preference as well. If you do , please take note of bullets 3 and 4 above :) Everything in Old Town is within walking distance in old town and they have free trolly car shuttles, peddle cabs etc..

UPDATE 4 Grand Canyon and Sedona Day Trip

25] You can do the Grand Canyon by way of Sedona in a one day trip , but it is a full day. I used a tour company last year , when my kids were all out here. This guy was fantastic. There were 6 of us. What I did was bought a van tour that would hold up to 10 (because I already had 6 going) . In essence that made it a private trip. It cost me a bit more to pay for the 10 seats , but kept us from having 4 others that we didn't know. You might could hook up with other tigers to save a bit. It was great for me to have a private family guide.

If you do call them , please tell them you are Clemson, and mention EssoClub :) who knows maybe she will give you and me a discount to do it again!

Vaughans Southwest Tours,
our Guide was Princely Nesadurai (odd name but FANTASTIC)
Company ph number is 602-971-1381

UPDATE 5

26] $2 PAW STAMPED BILLS RUSTY SPUR SALOON

Great use of a few Paw Printed $2 dollar bills in Old Town

Any Tigers that make their way to Old Town Scottsdale on your trip, be sure that you swing in to the Rusty Spur Saloon. It is a historic Saloon , (very small place).

People sign and tack dollar bills on the walls , as well as put up license plates from dang near everywhere. Anyone have an expired vanity Clemson Tag to bring :)

Anyway, once each year, the Saloon takes down all the dollar bills and donate that money to the Children's Hospital.

It would be FANTASTIC to see a bunch of Paw Stamped $2 bills on the walls of the the Rusty Spur for the better part of a year.

Local country musicians play guitar and sing starting about 1pm everyday, anyway . Its a walk in have a drink or bottled beer hear a song get a picture and mark it off the bucket list.

Fill them up with $2 bills guys. By the way, you can just about by a bottled beer for that there.

http://rustyspursaloon.com/

and welcome Mr Overton!

-Esso

I will keep updating this stuff , if you all want me to. If it is too much...just give me the ole hint..I have lived out here almost years and just super hyped to see so many tigers in the neighborhood!

Are there different locations to head for re: Grand Canyon? Are some closer and some better? What about tours of the Canyon? Is Mesa closer to Canyon or further than Phoenix/Glendale?

TIA

To try and answer your questions, we went through Sedona spent about 2 hours there, very cool. Then went in the Canyon from the north which our guy said avoided a huge amount of traffic at the particular time we going (May 2014). Then came out from the south. Dude new every where to get best shots, and made the trip fantastic. I am sure that some may prefer to rent a car and go on your own. That is good too, I have been told. Issue may be that you spend all your time looking for where you need to be.

You can do the Grand Canyon by way of Sedona in a one day trip , but it is a full day. I used a tour company last year , when my kids were all out here. This guy was fantastic. There were 6 of us. What I did was bout a van tour that would holdup to 10 (because I already had 6 going) . In essence that made it a private trip. It cost me a bit more to pay for the 10 seats , but kept us from having 4 others that we didn't know. You might could hook up with other tigers to save a bit. It was great for me to have a private family guide.

There are also lots of big bus Commercial tours that I do not recommend.

He picked us up at my condo 7am (Scottsdale)and got us back to the condo about 10pm , they will pick up from all the major hotels in PHX /Scottsdale/Paradise Valley(mesa is about 30 minutes away, they probably would ..don't know) . The guy that was our guide was super. He knows how to get into and hits all the great photo spots. We did a day trip that combined Sedona , on the way up...and then the Grand Canyon. Very full day. No wasted time looking for right spots etc. Spent about hour and a half in Sedona.

If you want the company name, TMail me , I can only recommend them from our experience but it was great.

I hope this link works! To a pic from my families tour.

Re: Public Service Announcement - UPDATE 3 Phx Bound Tigers

In addition to the above be sure to consider:
- Cave Creek area north of Scottsdale. Really touristy but still a fun place if you like that sort of thing.
- Downtown Tempe and/or Chandler. Both a lot of fun with a lot of newer stuff. Nothing outstanding but still cool places to see and eat at.
- A trip out to Fountain Hills to see the massive fountain and just a little bit of the desert.
- Hike up South Mountain, Camelback Mountain or Squaw (Piestwa)Peak if you are into climbing/hiking.
- Flagstaff is a few hours north of Phoenix and a really cool (COLD) day trip if you want to see snow, mountains, big forest, etc. Take a coat, the high temps will be in the low 30's.

I would not advise an attempt at a one day trip to the Grand Canyon since you'll be on the road for many hours and tempted to not spend enough time at the Canyon itself. Make it a two day trip on the way to Vegas and you'll enjoy more time at the Canyon.

Sedona is cool and if you're going there you should try to route yourself thru Jerome and/or Prescott. Jerome is a "not miss" if you're going to drive in the NW part of the state.

Want to ski? Flagstaff ("Arizona Snowbowl") and the White Mountains ("Sunrise") are both great little places to ski and should have plenty of snow by now. A trip to the White Mountains is always fun.

Wild West? Head southeast to Bisbee and Tombstone.

Enjoy.. I wish the weather would be better but it'll be what it will be...

Good list. The rusty spur doesn't have anything to do with the coots does it?

LOL , not as far as I know !

Even South Mountain Park is worth doing.

Jan 3, 2016, 4:10 PM

Just to experience the cacti, various reptiles, and great views with a totally different terrain from what one experiences back East.

Was out there a few years ago for a family wedding and did the canyon and Sedona over 2 days (stayed in Flagstaff) and visited South Mountain Park. Saw some crazy lizards and a road runner, which was cool.
