Portal solution?

I think we all agree one of the problems with the current state of college football is the massive amount of players entering the transfer portal. That will continue to happen as long as schools are willing to pick up those players.

Here’s my solution. When a high school player signs with college coming out of high school, the player and the university sign a contract that guarantees that student athlete will be provided with a four-year college degree as long as a student athlete follows certain guidelines, one of which is remaining with the team, going to classes, making grades; doing all the things a student is expected to do.

If the student athlete chooses to enter the transfer portal, the school that picks them up, has to sign a contract that would mandate that that new school has to guarantee that student athlete the opportunity to earn their college degree; so if the player is a bust, or is not adding value to the team, and even decides to quit playing sports, that new university is still liable to pay for that students college education.

I’m sure you can shoot holes in this 1 million ways over, but the thought here is putting some kind of financial burden and responsibility on the schools picking up portal players.

Would be curious to hear your thoughts.

I was going to suggest Mr Clean or Lysor

Make the portal a college draft like the NFL. PLAYER DRAFTED has to play for school that drafted hum or sit out a year. Colleges can trade with each other. At least the player that is recruited out of HS gets to decide what school he wants to attend. After that, they are just hunting for more money or playing time.

I still say model college FB after the NFL in all respects.

Just so long as the draftees don't have to take classes.

They came to play football, not play SCHOOL.

Our progressive, individualistic, “all about me” culture will not let any of this happen. Pandora’s box has been opened

It is timing and not transfers that are the issue but what other time could there be? Every team has 85 players that have heard all their life how great they are. Many, if not a big majority, players have little competition in high and are not prepared to sit on the bench in college. Players should have every right to look for a place to move to and try to fulfill a dream. Recruiting, dealing with transfers and keeping the scholarship numbers at 85 is just a huge task for coaches.

Two solutions.

1. Tie recruiting to graduation. Quincy Quarterback signs with Big Tech U for the 2024 football season. He counts as one of the 85 players until he graduates from Big Tech U or August of 2031, whichever comes first. If he leaves Big Tech U and enrolls in Large State U for the 2027 season he still counts as one of Big Tech U's 85 until 2031. And, now he also counts as one of Large State U's 85 until he graduates from Large State U or until August of 2034.

2. Quincy Quarterback signs an employment contract with Big Tech U. The terms of that contract, pay and length of service as well as the penalty for breaking that contract are explicitly spelled out in the contract.

#1 is using the principle that the purpose of an athletic scholarship is to pay for a college education. #2 is using the principle that the purpose of an athletic scholarship is to prepare the player for the NFL.

I have been proposing #1 for nearly 40 years.

The Universities are moving as quickly as possible to implement #2.
