the commission missed its date for police reform, but it probably will come soon.
What do you think should be reformed in current police practices? Do you think there should be any at all....everything is fine as it is?

I think the Capitol police officer that shot an unarmed woman should be outed on social media, tried for murder, and the family should get at least $27M. Now let’s go burn some ### down, I need a new pair of Brooks.

Instead of spending millions upon millions on specialized reform training for officers, wouldn’t it be much cheaper to have criminals stop committing crimes? I mean the laws are not just suggestions, they are called LAWS! Hence don’t break them and bad sh@t won’t happen! Geez you people!

Yes, I’m proposing we pay criminals to not commit crimes! That’s exactly what I said! Wow! I’m surprised you caught on!
When do you people begin to use common sense and quit following sheep? The greater Quantity of law abiding citizens = the fewer law breaking citizens (criminals). The fewer criminals (Law breakers) = the less need of police officers ( Law Enforcers ). The smaller the need of Law enforcers = the smaller the funding amount needed for “specialized” training ( or whatever the heII that means).
If this does not make sense to you guys maybe I can find someone in elementary school to provide translation.
My proposal is help educate others ( especially our own children) about self awareness, respecting others, and the consequences of breaking Freaking Laws and acting like fools! Yes! I said Fools!
I have taught my son that everyone is equal, skin colors do not matter and that racism, hatred and violence can be found in everyone and it would be wise to not get sucked into the war mongering media. I also taught him he should use good judgement when choosing friends no matter what color. Most importantly I also instructed him that if he was to encounter a police officer, guilty or not, freaking comply with a yes/no, sir/mam, say nothing that maybe incriminate Call me at first chance, I will acquire legal guidance and I will be wherever you are located in less than an hour.
It’s not that hard to teach your kids these things. How on earth would you not have common sense to practice these things knowing what has happened when people do struggle/ fight or run from the police? It’s like walking into a field of land mines. You see others have made it through unscathed and some aren’t so lucky. Why risk?

-End training that teaches to view every citizen as a potential enemy and eliminate "rather be tried by 12..." mentalities.
-No more military equipment or wannabe military attitudes. If an officer puts a skull logo anywhere on his uniform, he's fired. Basically, no more Billy Bad ### cops.
-More training for high-pressured situations and training on putting egos in check.
-No more SWAT teams to deliver warrants.
-Make body cam footage more accessible to the public.
-Better mental evaluations.
-More training in general but also more pay. Make it harder to be a cop but better compensate those who do become one.
-No more predatory traffic enforcement strategies.

And at the heart of all of that, these entrenched police unions that do not allow for any kind of accountability.
Despite how vociferously anti-Trump I am, I am no liberal. Unions are a cancer. You get one, your company's dead, it's just a question of time, and the same is true of police, because at that point, there is no accountability, no incentive for quality, and what sets in, at every level, is a culture of corruption and complacency.
Yes, rank-and-file cops deserve representation and some level of protection; their jobs are tough and there's no doubt the challenges they have to negotiate on a daily basis can be many. But just watching Derek Chauvin casually snuff George Floyd on the street as the crowd screamed at him to stop - and watching his three fellow cops just watched indifferently - you got a sense of just how impervious to consequences some cops truly feel. And Chauvin was a guy with eighteen complaints in his jacket over the years.

Agreed, and, to this point...
It's amazing how conditioned some in the public have been to blindly support police at all corners. Even the most ardent right wingers who claim they hate unions will fall in lockstep with the BS pushed by police unions. There were people on this board cheering for Chauvin to get off because... I dunno, support police at all costs?

I agree with both of you, good points. I’d add getting rid of qualified immunity. Make depts update the Brady list, along with having external independent investigators (not cops) for excessive force complaints violations and the like. Leave issues that are ‘internal’ for internal investigations A duty to act when officers see other officers doing things they shouldn’t be

Catahoula, I would add that since so many police also server in the military, once they return from over seas maybe have a years waiting period before they go back on patrol. Add to that a strong mental evaluation during this year long period.

Any reform at the national level will be clumsy, cumbersome, expensive, counterproductive and driven by politics more so than effective community policing.

I agree, it's gotta be case-by-case.
Some police departments are fine and really don't need much.
Some need to be ripped out by the roots, like they were in Camden, NJ, and completely started from scratch.
The biggest thing, I think, is there need to be some common tools to evaluate this, and there needs to be a lot more public-driven discourse on the subject. People know. You know good policing when you see it...and then you know bad policing when you see it, and it's not hard to see.

Beat cops should have to go through periodic psychological evaluations. Something they all have to do, so that there is no stigma around it.

I’m okay with that as long as a percentage of citizens of all color submit an periodic physics evaluation.

I would definitely be good with that, especially if you have a job related to physics that could kill someone. I'm definitely not a "defund the police" sort. And in most of the cases I've seen over the past few years, I think the police were justified in defending themselves or the public. I think policing is a very stressful and dangerous job, and the police are humans too. So, I think speaking with a counselor, that is trained in this area, would be helpful. If it is periodic and mandatory, then there would be no stigma attached to receiving some mental health one might need for such a high stress job where there is very little room for error.

What are we measuring now and what will we measure after reform to see if it actually worked?

More funding/training especially with regard to hand-to-hand situations. I listened to an interesting podcast where a certain precinct paid for brazilian jiu jitsu lessons for all new recruits who wanted it.
The results, according to him, were fewer injuries to both the cops and the suspects and more confidence on the cops part to handle situations that turn physical (thus resulting in fewer choices to go with either less-than-lethal or lethal routes)
