Opinion: FBS vs. FCS games. Will They Survive?
May 1, 2023, 6:20 PM

What do you think?
Being that the playoff will be expanded; do you think teams will worry as much as much about having a super robust schedule?
CFB has no pre-season games and you never really know how a kid will perform when the lights are on.
I personally like the "lesser opponent games" to begin the year!
I dislike them at or near the end.
Win your conference or be one of the most dominant in your conference. In conjunction with perhaps 1 loss to a powerful playoff opponent. And, you still get in.
Are you all of the opinion these games A. will go away? And then (B) should these games go away?

When the NCAA is removed they will become spring and preseason games… we are not far from it.

I don’t think so, not with a 12 team playoff. It gives plenty of room to lose a game or even two and still get in.
Personally I think they should go away. It’s not competitive and not interesting other than getting to see a lot of time from the backups. The upsets every blue moon are great but it doesn’t happen enough to justify keeping them.

The FBS is headed towards being split into two. The Haves and the Have-Nots.

It's good for the FCS schools bc it allows them to get a 'decent' payday....
But also, often more times than nought, the FCS teams are waaaaay overmatched by FBS schools...
Size, team depth, talent, etc....

Got it. But, do you think they will live on? Or do you think they will soon be a thing of the past?

Its not Clemson's job, nor should it be, to ensure Furman, Citadel, Myrtle beach Tech, etc keep their programs alive.

Instead of having maybe 6-7 teams fighting for 4 spots, you will have 30 fighting for 12 if that is the number. If there are more teams in the Playoffs, strength of schedule will be even more important.

VB - I want to agree with you, but I can't. Why? Well, now with fewer spots the ACC has a perceived lower strength of schedule than Big 10 or SEC teams; FSU and Clemson have gotten in.
Cincinnati has gotten in and Nobody is going, "Oh their strength of schedule was so awesome"!
L.Y. there was serious talk of LSU getting in with 2 losses; with 4 teams in the mix!
In short, I see it differently. If things stay how it is, you want a few ranked quality opponents - then you want to dominate or at least win somewhat convincingly in the games you should win.
Do that and there should be far less worry about politics and what region of the country you reside coming into play! All the West coast teams saying, "their is a East coast and South bias can just shut it up"! Bring your champion. ACC; bring your champion. Heck, AAC bring your champion. Big 12 and so on and so on. Be ranked in the top 12 and you give yourself an opportunity in other words.
And, VB over the years there have been many suspect teams who, "did not have anything close to resembling strong resumes in terms of S.O.S who were ranked in the top 12"! That's an easy Google search away.
So, can I summize you think the FBS vs. FCS games should go away? In favor of a stronger FBS opponent?

I say get rid of them during the regular season and schedule them during spring or summer camp. Given that the FCS schools now depend the money they get from these games in their budgets, charge admission and let the FCS team keep all or an agreed upon portion of the gate. If they go to this, the state legislature should make a rule that Clemson and SC be required to schedule only in state schools.

HC's love weak opponents, as many as they can get, and AD's love non-reciprocal home games. Conference affiliations & obligations notwithstanding, look for SEC teams and Clemson to continue to schedule weak sauce.

Not that this was only about Clemson, but I really like the way Clemson schedules and defend our scheduling philosophy at every opportunity.
That said, I expect FBS vs FCS games will go away.
I'd rather play an in-state FCS school each year than plan a G5 school that has no appeal to our fans. I mean, Troy? Louisiana Tech? UConn? MAC schools? I'd rather host Furman or S.C. State than these schools. If we're going to play Sun Belt schools, why not Coastal? (Not just because they've been good, but because their fans will come.)

Or Georgia Southern go into "The Swamp" and run the football on that "OH so VAUNTED, SEC Speed Defense" with Jerrick McKinnon.
Or Jacksonville State beating Miss. St. Or San Jose St. beating Arkansas in "ye ole SEC nobody plays football but us country"!
I'll miss that too!
You forgot about App St. going into Columbia and beating the Shameclucks!

FBS vs FCS should have gone away a long time ago

Yea yea, I get it, was great fun to see Citadel beat the coots, etc, but by and large the games are laughably uncompetitive and pointless. A legitimate D1 program is better off scrimmaging against itself than playing most of these FCS level programs.

I think they'll still survive

B10 tried to eliminate them a few years ago & ended up walking them back.
Big schools are still gonna want an easy game somewhere along the way. & w/ the expanded playoff, probably lessens the argument against them given not just taking more teams, but schools knowing if they win their conference & rank in Top 25, their spot is almost assured.
Also for FCS schools, those games give them a financial bump & w/ all the avenues (conf networks, streaming, etc) it gives them exposure.
Think the big change should be ensuring they're early season games (no 1 should be playing a FCS school in October or November).

I remember that.
The thing is; Nobody in the country; no matter what conference: "talking about you SEC" isn't scheduling cupcakes!
No disrespect intended in calling the FCS teams cupcakes either.
But, with no preseason to judge how well your team has gelled, to me this is the next best thing!
It has benefits other than some of the things mentioned here.
And, I agree with you, I thik they'll survive.

athletic departments, the NCAA should allow those games to be played as paid preseason scrimmages, as many of those smaller schools depend on those $$$ for a huge chunk of their yearly budget.

I agree 76er.
TBH - I think CFB needs "1" single-solitary preseason game and these FCS games could be it.
1. It would be a big pay day for the FCS school.
2. It wouldn't hurt a FBS schools S.O.S.
3. For the player safety crowd; "you do know the team would just replace a scrimmage amongst themselves" with this, right?
The players wouldn't have to play anymore than they are now or take any less hits.
And, it's good for both schools for different reasons!
