Jboyboyd, I disagree on this one. Without the error in the 3rd, Jake would have had a 3 up 3 down inning. He would have had 3 shutout innings. In the 4th he had walked 2 but had 2 outs when he left. We should have been able to close that door for him with no damage. It certainly wasn't the outing we'd hoped for, but he did strike out 5 in the 3 2/3 inning stint. He will have a better outing next time. He fell into the same confidence problem today that Charlie, Clate, and Brody have fallen into this year. They have the physical gift. It's just the mental part. They simply lack confidence. Confidence is what allowed Matthew in the 1st game of the FSU series to approach the home plate umpire on the road and ask for help with the mound conditions (ump asked grounds crew to come out with bags of dirt and fill and pack the hole - the FSU starter was struggling with the same hole during the previous 1/2 inning but he didn't have the confidence to ask for help). Confidence allowed Matthew to ignore the FSU coaches and croud when they yelled balk and to ignore the distraction of the batters stepping out. Confidence is what allowed Zach to shake off fast ball signs to get to curve ball signs yesterday.
Jake had experienced enough success that he was there - you could see his confidence growing each start. Then we had some fielding issues and Jake had some grip issues and he made a bad play. And just like that, the precious commodity called confidence was shot. Wait until next start. He'll be back in top form. :)

We have 3 quality starters:

Crown - If I'm starting a team, he is my first pick.
Erwin - Quiet, efficient, consistent
Jake - Stud who is just now getting into pitching shape

Top relievers in my mind are:

Krall - He just consistently gets the job done.
Vetzel - He has ice in his veins and has no fear.
Bostic - Hard thrower. Just needs more a little more control
Barnes - Has been coming along as of late.

Lets just get to a regional and lets the chips fall. It's all we can do and I think we can do some damage. I believe in this team and this pitching staff.

I think, if you look closely, Jake's numbers are pretty good. The low hits typically more than compensate for the walks in his starts. No doubt he was struggling to find the plate Friday. The only thing that I know of that produces confidence is performance (confidence boosts performance which boosts confidence which boosts performance which...). Brody only allowed 3 runs in his first 3 games (21 innings). This culminated in the 9 inning shut out against USC. The next week things blew up against NC State, he had a horrendous start, and I would argue that he's had a confidence problem ever since. Charlie came in for 10 Wofford batters and was perfect for his 3 1/3rd. We've seen some of that magic of late. Just like Jake and Brody and Charlie, we've seen Clate get it done. I know they all have the tools. I have seen it. It's just consistently getting in a possitive place mentally. Maybe we need to hire John Smoltz's psychiatrist - he sure changed the trajectory of Smoltz's career.

I do agree 100% it is a mental state.
