On game Day

Nov 21, 2021, 11:41 AM

I always enjoy walking downtown and compare what I see now compared with the town of Clemson that I enjoyed in the sixties when I was a student. There is a BIG difference. There was ONE place within walking space in the entire village where a poor country boy could but a fourteen ounce Old Milwaukee for thirty cents and that was Nick the Greeks. I bet some of you elderly Clemson gentlemen can validate what I have just said. No beer and no girls and I still loved the place. And still do.

Recruiting was very much different in those days. It didn’t become a subject that was even discussed until several years later. Many of you remember when the local publication “Orange and White” became a staple for Clemson fans
I couldn’t wait for the next issue. I vividly remember in the late 70’s that there was movie theater in the building now occupied by Coach Ibrahim’s sports shop that had a marquee on top like most theaters did in those days.
There was a “recruiting message” on the front that said ... Dan Marino. We want you . The rest is history as he went on to Pitt and became a hall of fame quarterback in the NFL. Look where we are now. Recruiting gets as much attention as the games.

CLEMSON has certainly caught up with the times and is now among the leader in most college sports.

To Foresttiger:

My freshman year was 1967. There were girls in school ... but not many.

My favorite places downtown were The Study Hall -- awesome bar -- and the Red Carpet Inn, now Tiger Town Tavern. But I am not sure the Red Carpet was open my freshman year, I think it was the next year when it arrived. Would love to hear from someone who knows.

As different as downtown is, it hasn't changed as much as campus.

got there in '64.agree with everything you said.nick served the 1st beer this baby-faced 17 year old had at CU.will always have a special place in my heart for our school.can't explain it to others who didn't go there, especially during the 60's.wish i could visit more often, but for family considerations i live too far away.but every time i do get to visit,my heart and mind get flooded with memories of fun times and lifelong friendships.CU will always remain one of my best life choices.'nuff said.

No one has mentioned Dans. Without question it was THE place to be in the 60’.s I went every Sunday evening to watch Gunsmoke .. Dan had the only tv in town! There was one tv on campus that I am aware of and it was in a lounge above the loggia. Correct me if I’m wrong It’s been 57 years for me.

Might have been Bonanza. I’m not sure.
