OK, OK. I can't wait til tomorrow.

Thanks for your kind words in my other post.
In my old age, I've learned that fans everywhere have a lot of similarities. They are never satisfied. And, the solution is nearly always one of two things - fire the coach or change quarterbacks.
Now, a few random thoughts from a Nole perspective about the game.
Mine: 1. Our OL and DL both played above my expectations.
2. Mike Norvell is very creative in scheming formations and plays to get RBs into open territory even with inferior talent on the LOS. (I have no idea how he does it, but ha manages to get several plays where the play has 3 guys blocking two, or two blocking one.) You would have never convinced me that fSU would have 200+ yards rushing and average 6 yards per carry with a long run of only 25 yards.
3. Alex Atkins (OL coach) is doing a good job making chicken salad out of chicken feathers. He's getting the most out of what he has on OL. (Side Note: He came to FSU from Charlotte. Maybe that is why Charlotte has struggled so badly the past two years.)
4. Why wasn't Bo Collins targeted more last night? Was he even targeted once? Is he in the Love Shack? Is he injured.
5. Norvell has built a team where the guys buy in. They play hard. They don't quit. They had every reason to fold and go through the motions after Clemson got up 34-14. But, they didn't. They would have 2 years ago. They might have last year. But, not this year.
I was texting with a few Nole friends during the game. When FSU went for the fake field goal someone texted, "What was he doing? Why do that?"
I replied, "Act of desperation. He sees what is coming. Final score: 55-14." Every person agreed with me.
I have no idea how the final score was 34-28. I know FSU didn't quit. But, what happened to Clemson O and D? Did they get conservative? Did they play a lot of guys? Did they just get a little complacent expecting FSU to accept defeat?
Bottom line: FSU played better than I expected at the beginning of the game. Clemson adjusted and the game started going as I expected from about midway through 2nd quarter. I was not surprised when the score became 34-14. Fom that point on, everything surprised me.
I checked a couple of message boards, and listened to a post game streaming commentary (warchant tv on youtube). Here is a compilation of what was said by posters during and after the game:
Fire Norvell and hire Deion Sanders. (I won't go into detail of all the reasons they gave, but that was the majority opinion.) Just so y'all understand my position - That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The only thing more ridiculous would be to hire me as the DB coach.
I checked a Notre Dame board, just out of curiosity. This is the board (uhnd.com) that praised ND staff when they hired Freeman. They raved about how much better ND would be with him as coach rather than Kelly. Consensus now? Fire Freeman. Stupid hire. We hired a recruiter who can't coach. We'd be better off with a coach who can't recruit. We're gonna be mediocre or worse until he's fired. Admit your mistake and fire him now.

I just put this elsewhere, but here's my thoughts.

At the end of the 3rd quarter. Down by 20. 14 sec or so left and FSU decides not to run a play and instead let the 3rd quarter end. Norvell and his players were ready to call it quits, and get out with any further embarrassment.
Unfortunately Clemson gave FSU their fire back by giving the ball right back after the beautiful goal line stand. A short field. A defense that didn't get to rest. FSU scores. Then our offense goes conservative (I can't help that Streeter says it didn't). FSU gets within 6.
Luckily(Skillfully) we recover the onsides kick to seal the deal that 15 minutes prior was already sealed with a nice, fat, shiny bow.

Funny, I just rewatched the 4th quarter. To my eyes, what Streeter said was true - we stayed aggressive - and it nearly cost us. After the goal line stand, we go 3&out passing on 1st&3rd downs - leaving at least a minute on the clock that could have been bled. The next drive we go down the field primarily running, stalling out only when we threw the ball and had the false start.
On a related noted, despite the success, I did not like the flee flicker. I want to take an opponent’s will to win away. You don’t do that by gimmicks, you do it by asserting your will and have the realize they are powerless to stop it. Blow them off the line and hand the ball off.

Yeah both of those throws were by 2021 DJU and missed by a mile. His accuracy is still inconsistent.

Lol that had me chuckling but a good post Bret. The firing Norvell talk is about the most insane talk I've ever heard. You know as well as I do that dumber stuff can be found right here.

BretFSU, your team does not give up but your fans sure did. Maybe they need a refresher course in supporting their team and not looking like Coot Fans. This has been a hard three game set so, hopefully, your season will get better. Wish you luck!

FSU fans are just like other fans. Even after we came back and had a slim chance to win, some still want to fire Norvell.
"If Josh Huepel can beat Bama in year two, why can't Norvell beat Clemson in year 3?"

committed the most accepted penalties in their entire history. They played a sloppy game. UT played a great game, but played a much cleaner game than Bama and got the W for it. Still - that's the most evenly Bama has been matched against someone in a while. Great game to watch and not really care who wins!

I’d keep Norvell over Deion too. Deion was a great player but he’s a pompous jack a r s e.
Notre Dame fans are the original spoiled, entitled fan base. They live on history because they haven’t been relevant in a very long time. I really hope we go up there and turn that place orange and curb stomp them.

“What happened to Clemson O and D” We tried to have a civil discussion asking the same question and instead spent the whole day calling each other whiners, ungratefuls and haters. The truth is no one knows what happened but I wouldn’t discount a valiant FSU effort and not quitting. They wanted to win that game they just didn’t have the horses

Allowed blatant holding by fsu OL, but called it on Clemson. Gave Travis just enough time to make a play or escape.
I don’t know why our OL couldn’t open a hole except for one play when FSU D was tired.

the other team was holding all game and it wasn’t called.
It is posted here after just about every game.
Let me guess, it’s part of the ACC and/or NCAA conspiracy against Clemson?

Can he turn it around? I dont know, but you have to wonder if he will be given enough time to even find out. This season has been a disaster. Not sure he survives another next year.

FSU lost the game the moment Norvel decided to pass on 4th and 2 instead of handing it to Benson. If yall stuck with the run I'm not sure Clemson leaves with a W.
The scheme was bad vs that zone blocking, wide splits on the DL and LBs lined up too far outside to fill cut back lanes or plug any lane inside. Norvell made several bad calls that cost his team the W.

I think the "never give up" mentality is one of the hallmarks of a great program. The abilty to keep the kids focused on the ballgame rather than the score is way harder to do than to say. I think Noprvell has reinstilled that mentality at FSU. It is the most substantive sign I see for the return of FSU football.

You had said earlier that your RT was a weak link on your OL. Did he exceed your expectations? Because I was watching early and we weren't getting any pressure on the QB from there that I could tell. I quit watching when yall were pushing our line down the field.
Did the freshman play or did someone else ?

He played better. But, by the 4th quarter he was getting beat on a regular basis.
Watching the first half, our running plays were almost always to the left side of the line, away from him, so that helped in the run game.

I hope for FSU they keep Norvell but as a Clemson I'd be okay if the ran him off. That guy has done some work and if given the chance he is going to make FSU very competitive. I shared in the frustrations others expressed about our curious strategy for the second half if 3rd and the 4th quarters, but FSU has something strong going on.

Dabo doesn't blow teams out this time of the season.
Oct 16, 2022, 11:31 PM
|
|
His goals are to develop our bench building muscle memory, developing skill and maturing them emotionally with resolve and resilience. He also wants to play starters less and less as the bench shows up on the field which limits their minutes on the field and lowers the probability of injuries.
He is willing to allow our defensive bench to give up huge chunks of yards to back them up to the goalline and put them under that pressure to harden them. If he thinks the game is on the line that's even more successful. Dabo manufactures adversity unlike many coaches who will run up scores with starters on the field to scratch and claw their way to the best ranking possible. Many times it's about self preservation. Some are just buttwipes like Spurrier and Saban.
If your goal is to win the last game and expect it to be the final Playoff game you might see the logic and reasoning behind these nail biters. I admit, it took me several years to relax during early games, Lord knows we lost a few, Pitt, Cuse and maybe a couple others.
Last season was different. We got whipped more than once and Dabo didn't have to manufacture adversity, adversity was wearing the #5 jersey.
I would not have taken FSU and the 3.5-4.5 points but I wouldn't have given FSU 12 points and taken Clemson either. I was a bit concerned when your team jumped up with two TD before my bladder got full.
