Southwest Airlines making Spirit look like a luxury brand

Today they canceled my flight that I booked 3 weeks ago; and all of their alternative flights from CLT, RDU, and GSP that will get you to MIA or FLL in time for the game have been canceled or are full. What a bunch of worthless turds.

You mean the dude who graduated from Harvard and Oxford was a Rhodes scholar, served as an officer in the Navy in Afghanistan, and was a consultant for the most prestigious management consulting firm in the world McKinsey and company before entering politics? I suspect your issues with him aren’t with his qualifications. He was by a very wide margin the most qualified person in the last presidential election; if he was married to a woman he’d be our president right now.

Hahahaha. Bc education makes you a great politician. He did wonders as mayor of a small town. Joking of course. But absolutely zero experience as a qualified leader of anything.
Not saying he’s an idiot. But slow down on the “next president” talk.

It may be blamed on that (by him) but he’s absolutely completely unqualified to be in his current position: let along potus.

Of course they are full...it's Dec 27th and holiday travel is always a mess. Flights book up, as intended, in advance.

I don’t think any of the airline are worth a #### at this point

American made me sit on a runway for an hour and a half then shut the doors of my next flight as I was sprinting up to them. Made me miss the entire purpose of the flight. Even though it’s absolute garbage to offer someone a flight at a specific time and take their payment only to not deliver, I could deal with that.
It was the absolute churlish attitude of every employee in the airport on top of the fact that they refuse to even speak about compensating you for their error. I waited on hold for 2 hours to be told they couldn’t do anything and that I could file a claim that would possibly be looked at. All while i’m stranded 4 hours away from anywhere I needed to be. But airlines seem to be the one industry allowed to sell you something that they don’t even have with absolutely no penalty to them so why would they change?

Lack of competition is the problem ...
Dec 27, 2022, 2:35 PM
|
|
... the bigger airlines gobble up the smaller airlines so there is no competition.
In driving up to Clemson from Georgia on Hwy 28 ... right after crossing into South Carolina there is a saw mill that used to be thriving. We used to roll down the windows for the sweet smell of the lumber after being cut and there was a lot of activity in that area.
Then Georgia Pacific (I think) came in and bought the mill... and closed it down. There's no more activity there anymore and the little cafe and I assume other businesses around the mill have folded without the traffic from the mill.
I'm sure the original owners were given an offer they couldn't refuese and it must have been more cost effective for the 'big fish' to buy the mill than to have to worry about competition.
The airline industry has also consolidated to a point where competition is less than before and not only have prices risen, but customer service has gotten worse.

Delta did same to me. On another occasion, our non stop flight from ATL to Vegas stopped in Memphis to pick up two flight attendants. We were on ground for over 5 hours because weather was too bad to take off. That was my last flight on Delta.

Flight for tomorrow and offered to change my flight for free. However of course all of the other flights they offer are either also canceled or full. They’ve canceled 70% of their flights for the rest of the week while other carriers are only at 5%. Also of course any flight I book today with another airline will be at least 3 times the cost of the flight I booked 3 weeks ago.

Thanks, that makes more sense. Cancelations were at massive highs several days ago due to the impacts from weather, which throws off the whole system even if the weather is in another region of the country.
But you are right - Southwest is the only airline that hasn't really recovered from that disruption yet. Their two main hubs were in cities that were blasted with snow and they are struggling mightily to get back on track.
Have they offered a full refund of the airfare?

Yes they’ll refund the fare but their website is also hosed

And won’t recognize your reservation number or the link they texted to access the flight details; the app isn’t even updated with the cancelation. Their call center is so backed up you can’t even get in the queue all you get is a busy signal when you call their help line.

If you need to fly from CLT, your best bet right now will be Spirit. Probably the next worst airline at the moment in terms of reliability, but you can take a shot at it. It's gonna cost you $600-700.

Sneaky trick for holidays in the future. Buy a backup fully refundable reservation on a second airline. If your cheaper fare first airline gets you there, get the other ticket refunded. No help for this problem, I'm sorry to say. Southwest has melted down.

Perhaps you should’ve mentioned that in your original post.
Generally, flying low cost airlines gets you low cost experiences. Buyer beware.
Nonetheless, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this and hope you find resolution.

Delta is usually impractical from any city in the southeast other than Atlanta. Since you exclusively fly Delta I find it weird that you wouldn’t know that.

Cade’s parents rented a car when faced with the same issue - my kind of folks…OR maybe they don’t know to whine on Tnet when most of the country had some really rough weather. I mean, it IS all about you, right? Dang Coots went and messed up your travel plans…load Mama in the pickup and get down the road son!

I avoid flying if at all possible. I used to fly a lot for work and just got really tired of the lack of control you have on your own schedule. Sometimes you have to fly, but I scheduled this trip to Fort Lauderdale as a driving trip all along. 10.5 hours from Easley. Leaving about 7:30 tomorrow morning. My buddy that is coming in from PA is flying Spirit. Hope he stays on schedule.

If you live in SC/NC/GA it is probably faster to just drive. Only a flawless airport experience on both ends will get you door-to-door in under 8 hours, and the chances of that are not good these days. Did a training down there with a coworker. She drove and I flew. She beat me home by like 6 hrs.
