I would only support a 9 game schedule

Oct 5, 2016, 7:24 AM

If we were a 10 team league and you played everyone.

In fact, since it went playoff and expansion is inevitable, college football should consist of 8 leagues with 10 teams each. Champs of each get in.

As it is we'll get 5 champs and a committee voting for "wild cards".

Meh.

We are so close with divisions and conference championship games. Big 12/10 had to go and screw it up.

I think the fall of the big 12 and the shift to a power 4 leads to ND being forced to move into a conference to have access to the playoff. The 4 championship games become round 1 of the playoffs. The questions then become conference size (16, 18, 20) and how the money is dispersed? Those won't be easily answered.

funny thing is ...

I like the Big12 structure. I HATE the unbalanced schedule and lopsided competitiveness of the divisions.

Playing Miami or VT or whomever from the coastal once very 8 years or whatever that ends up being with a 16 team "conference" is frustrating to me.

I get it, the drawbacks that 10 teams give you from the manufactured championship game scenario as a "playoff first round", reduced money and hype.

However my preference is to make the regular season king within conference.

Perhaps they could schedule game dates to arrange late season match ups between the top seeded teams from the previous year would likely produce exciting and meaningful late season games. Vs the current cluster when and if we play FSU early son either can recover in the rankings from the loss

Oh I completely agree, but 8 team divisions gives you the same outcome.

7 regular season division games

1 instate money maker for the smaller schools

3 out of conference games against the 3 other power conference (allows seeding of playoff teams)

1 conference championship as the 1st round

4 team playoffs with 1 team from each conference

Ok but your division is your conference.

Confusing subject line but for all intents, the guys in the coastal are only slightly more relevant to us than Nebraska. If we only play them on a rotation of home and home once a decade than we aren't in the ACC for football. We are in the Atlantic.

It's only slightly less annoying in basketball.

I think we will see something along those lines in the future. The first domino to fall would be the big 12 dissolving. Once those teams are taken up by the conferences, I think the it will shake out into 4 major conferences with with 2 divisions each. We will then see the division winners play in the de facto round 1 i.e. conference championship games. Round 2 will be similar to the current bowl game/playoff scenario with the championship game as is. The potential sticking point will be how to work out the money and what number of teams will be in this new scenario i.e. 64, 72, or 80.

I'm in the minority in that I actually like the current 4 team set up. It creates a tremendous amount of interest and buzz. Right now no conference is locked in to the playoff. If any conference were to beat itself up they could be on the ouside looking in. I don't see that happening in the ACC other than a potential upset in the ACC championship game.

I hope you notice the time of my post following your comments on the PO first round being CCGs. I must have been typing at about the same time as you.

In that post I extended the concept and added that I believe The Big 12 didn't want to expand based on being able to have a bigger slice of the PO money with fewer teams. If we believe that to be the case then it naturally follows that their slices of the pie are greater than those with more members.

If that is the case then economics would make it very difficult for Big 12 teams to be poached. However, the SEC is certainly in the driver's seat when it comes to money. If Texas or OU left it would probably fall apart. If somebody wants Texas they can have it as far as I'm concerned. They are almost as bad a diva as ND.

We're just about structured well enough to view CCGs as...

Oct 5, 2016, 8:17 AM

the first round. If those greedy Big 12 teams would go ahead and add a few more teams to their league we'd have five power fives. For all practical purposes the PO committee would only be selecting one 'wild card.'

I'm hoping against that conference. I'm hoping they achieve parity and beat each other up so they'll get left out of the playoffs a few times. The greedy basterds just do not want to split the PO and TV money into smaller slices. If they don't get PO money for a few years perhaps economics will sway them to add a couple more teams.
