With the talk of Wilkins to d-end

Jul 11, 2015, 11:19 AM

Anybody think we move to more of a 3-4 this year?

No way we have a proven system that works and these guys have been in it for year. If Wilkins can play SDE then that will just make us that much better.

From what I hear, Wilkins is already better than Dodd with much more upside.
He's a man among boys, and just wait until he has a year of serious weight training.

Wilkins-Reader-Watkins-Lawson would be a dominant 1st team line if Wilkins lives up to the hype. Running backs would just take a knee instead of running into that wall. My question is: is the Wilkins to DE experiment just because we are worried about DE depth and he will move back to DT next year? Getting one of your best players on the field any way you can?

3-4 is less common in college than NFL...

Jul 11, 2015, 1:11 PM

You need a deep group of veteran, smart LBs, and a boat anchor at nose.

Young college LBs have a hard time picking up 3-4, because it requires more decision making. And 340 lb nose tackles don't grow on trees. The talent coming out of high school is just easier to use in 4-3.

3-4 is a great pass defense once they are coached up to stop the run. It is more confusing and less predictable for passing offenses.

Has Clemson ever run a 3-4?

I believe we ran a 3-4 against GT in 2010

Worked pretty well against the option.

That would be great news if he Wilkins is talented enough to play SDE (at 300+ pounds no less). That would give us the opportunity to leave Huggins inside, and give us some decent depth across the defensive line. I like this development. To the above poster, I would imagine ultimately Wilkins will be a career DT since we do not run a 3-4. He will likely add more bulk and strength during his time here, and will be a war daddy in the middle. But if he really balls out at DE, who knows.
