I don't hate it. I think it's better than the 4th and 12 thing they do in the XFL.

Don’t see how it wouldn’t and that is the huge flaw in the idea.

4th and 20 is a bit too far no? maybe 12-15 yards instead? And on their own 20? I'd say 35 yard line but those are the only changes I would make, the rest sounds interesting.

I agree with you. 12 yards to gain from the 35 would be awesome.***

I would be willing to spot the ball on the 30 or 35, but I still like the 20-yards-to-gain because retaining possession after a score SHOULD be hard. Gaining 20 yards (or an automatic first down) on one play is still far more likely statistically than gaining possession on an onside kick, and bears a great semblance to the rest of the modern American game than the current scrum. You don't spend 10-15 minutes in practice on this singular thing; now you can use that time to work on plays that will pick up 20 yards, which is something you might try to do plenty during the season.

There were 34,136 plays ran last year. 56 of them were onside kicks (1/10 of 1% of all plays--one in every thousand plays). THREE of those resulted in the offense retaining possession. Around 5% of tries.

Do you know how many times teams ran a play for more than 25 yards in 2022? 922 times. Not many of those were 4th and 20 plays, but you understand that gaining 20 or 25 yards in one play is far more likely. That's why I like 20 yards to gain. Even if it were 30 yards, and you were behind and this was the only way you could extend the game, I think teams would opt for it over an onside kick.

4th and 20 is a little much

4th and 10-15 is just right IMO from the 25 is fair IMO.
