Next Day Orange Bowl Observations:

Dec 31, 2022, 8:27 AM

OK, the game did not turn out like we wanted it to. Some reasons for that:

1) A common theme in our last three BIG bowl games has been that our offensive line cannot keep the defenders out of our backfield long enough to mount an effective passing attack. That was certainly on display again last night. Now, there has been turnover all along the line, but same results. So, is it strength coaching, blocking scheme, or just lack of talent. I do not know the reason, I only see the results.

2) Our true freshman QB, under duress all night, looked just like you would expect a true freshman to look in that situation. He got blasted all night, and kept getting back up and trying it again. He is a keeper. But, one critique I must make. He would not have developed that "backpedal bailout" move if it had not worked at some point. So, I must assume it worked well for him in high school. It will NOT work in college, as the defenders are too fast. This will be painfully evident on film study, as well as physically for Cade when he wakes up this morning.

3) Once again, for the most part, our much vaunted defensive line could not get pressure on THEIR QB. Yes, we got him on the ground some, but for the most part, he was standing back there looking around, and picking us apart.

4) Back to OUR offensive line, for those who cry about "why didn't we run it more", the game turned early on our inability to gain less than two yards to keep drives alive, SEVERAL times. In short, we couldn't run it when they knew we were going to run it, and we couldn't throw it much on rhythm at ANY point. All that comes back to the offensive line.

5) KNOWING Cade had no time to throw, where were quick slants, jet sweeps, ANYTHING to slow down the bullrush of Tennessee? Offensive play calling, as it has been for most of the year, was just not well done last night. We were fortunate to get out of that game without Cade having to spend the spring rehabbing a major injury, as many times as we set him up to be blasted to the ground.

Other than those things, the night was just peachy. Except for the blown defensive coverages that led to easy Vol scores, of course.

:(

Well said

We are very lucky Cade was not injured with all the hits he took.

He will grow from this very excited about him.

The other points you laid out need to be addressed and have been evident all year.

Let's Go Tigers

We also gave up 6 chances for field goal points.

1 fake FG try
3 missed FG's
1 FG try at the end of the half when Cade ran
1 FG at the end of the game when Cade threw the Int.

That's 18 points

The most frustrating part of your observation is #5. We pay our coaches way too much money for them to be a part of the problem.

They are NOT part of the problem, They are the Problem!!! We played against a 10AC team that was not more talented than our Clemson team. Our problem right now is coaching, and if our HC do not fix the problem that he himself created, going into next season will only mean our team will have the very same problems that Dabo created for those men, and like it, hate it, or get pisssed off bc someone voiced what the problem is, don't blame the messenger, blame the person/persons who created the problem bc they felt they had an ingenious idea that he came up with over everyone else. The most important thing that was overlooked with Dabo's idea of growing his coaching staff at Clemson, and I believe that he made an honestly mistake but, will he correct the very mistake that he made, and the only admission I would expect from Dabo would be, is to say that things didn't turn out the way that he expected them to, and that he feels that it's best that he changes direction for the upcoming future of Clemson FB, and we wait for his presser that he has replace Goodwin and Streeter with experience for the future success of his FB program.

I believe that if Dabo was to do, he would gain respect from around the country, even with the people that hasn't cared for Dabo since the day that he was hired as our Head FB coach. I will also confess again that I was one of not very many that cheered for Dabo when Terry Don appointed Dabo as our new HC bc everything that I read about Dabo, he had been successful, and my thoughts were why not as a HC bc all he had to do as a HC was to hire tons of experience to be his assistants, and he did, and it worked well for him leading the way. But Dabo done what most successful people do when they beat the odds. He went too far out on the limb to prove that he was a better Xs and 0s FB coach than he was, and he would train his staff to be as successful as he has been as the leader/CEO of Clemson FB, and he went too far out on that limb, and it broke, but it's not too late for a net too be placed under him before he hits the bottom.

Is Dabo compassionate enough about the program that he led to the top, is he willing to change direction of a wrong turn he made, or will his stubborn streak that has reared its head cause him to lose everything good he has done at Clemson. I don't know, what I do know is that everything good he's done at Clemson don't have to end, and it won't end if Dabo proves that he isn't afraid of change, and he makes the necessary changes that will put Clemson FB back on course, but he will have to make those changes soon even if it hurts.

Terry Don Smith was willing to suffer the consequences when he made his decision to hire Dabo as the new HC, and Dabo should do the same with his hire of coordinators last spring. Humans can't go through life without having to live or die by the sword, and this is just another of those times in Dabo's life, it won't be the first, and it won't be his last, or at least I hope not. But I do feel he can continue his success as the HC at Clemson....

I haven't been happy with Streeter or Goodwin, but I believe that there is some middle ground. I feel like Dabo and both coordinators need to admit to having a large amount of fault in the season not being better. They then need to admit that changes need to be made and do some serious self-evaluating in the off season.

Unlike some people, even though I think the hiring of Streeter and Goodwin was a mistake, I believe that they deserve at least one year to prove that they can adapt and grow as coordinators. Maybe I feel this way because we all know that their jobs are nearly as safe as Dabo's. Regardless there needs to be an understanding that there will be change in philosophy or next year there will be a change in staff.

I have serious concerns that I am going to be told that I should be satisfied with 11 wins, and that we were only a few mistakes by the players away from having a better season. I don't care if I should be or that I am spoiled, I am not happy with 11-3 and we have the talent to afford a few mistakes by players that are not tied to coaching and still win.

When I played basketball years ago, we constantly told our teammates, "My bad," admitting that we made a mistake. I just have not seen much of that out of this coaching staff, leading me to wonder if they understand that everything, in fact, most things, are not the fault of the players.

We did not seem to use much motion before the snap to get a better matchup or see how they’d play us. Maybe we did and I missed it. Did the coaches simplify the game plan?

When do we use motion? I thought that approach went away several years ago.

It brought back memories of QB we had that wore jersey #10, he got off the ground more times in that one game than he did his entire Clemson career, I think it was the game against LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. He took a beating, and he had different results than poor Cade had last night but, I have to say that I was proud of the way that Cade held up bc, they were definitely trying to end his night.

To address the OL play:

Dec 31, 2022, 8:56 AM

This was their worst game collectively. UT DL lined up in sprinter stances and went hair on fire all night. It’s tough to constantly block that pressure when the play calls did not make them pay for the aggression. There were a couple of throw backs, and Cade’s zone reads were great, but nothing sustained. A screen or TE short slant to the middle (throw it where they kept coming from) would have helped and would have made the blocking a little more easy.

Our short runs maybe would have been more successful with mafah back there. Shipley had a great game, but on short yardage, it seems like you need the big dude in there.

From an OL technique standpoint during pass pro, we did a bad job keeping shoulders parallel with the line, tending to focus in on one guy that was shaded - that leads to turning to the side and turning your back to the hole you just created by focusing on one guy.

Rough night for sure.

Absolutely - and Putnam comes to mind on his double-teams against the DT over our RT. He had no recognition of the gap he was leaving and of the LB crashing through it until it was too late to do anything but holler "Look out!"

That is a progressive function of:

1) Recruiting at RT
2) Development at RT
3) S&C at RT
4) Speed and agility
5) Development at C
6) Speed and agility at C
7) Scheme
8) Coaching
9) In-game adjustments

All of the above point to coaching.

I have wondered as well why Mafah does not get the ball more on short yardage. I think Mafah should be a much better compliment to Shipley than he is utilized as. The young man is a beast.

I'm still ticked at that ridiculous Drew Swinney fake

Dec 31, 2022, 10:12 AM

I know Dabo wanted to try to let his son have a minute of glory in his last game, but that was inexcusable. They can do that sort of thing versus Furman not in a major New Year's Six bowl.

To be fair, he choked and didn’t pitch it. That was a going to be an easy first down if not a touchdown. I still didn’t like the call regardless. Let your kicker settle in early.

With the D line I just wonder how much of it is scheme. When you are going against an offensive line that is physically equal to you, you can only expect to do so much lining up and going head to head 4 against 5. You are not going to do but so much without stunts and blitzes.

We certainly don't lack talent, which puts most of the shortcomings on the coaches. Goodwin deserves more than 1 year, but if he doesn't grow up quickly as a coach then he needs to go back to being in the background.

Goodwin is playing with Venables poker hand. If he can't recruit when those players are gone, we're going to be screwed.

There needs to be some honesty here…great post btw…It’s a coaching and talent issue at key positions. THE only saving grace for Klubnik last night is the fact he’s a true freshman and inexperienced…His decision making at times last times was very poor…made poor and ill advised throws…read the RPO incorrectly…bailed on what little timely pocket he had to let play develop…He’s got some major improving and developing to do…and to be honest it downright scares me that Streeter is responsible for that.

OL talent is bad…particularly at center and LT…Will Putnam is as a bad as a gets…I’m sorry but he needs to move on…McFadden thinking he will man an NFL roster is comical. Next year will be the key to see how developed guys like Tristan Leigh are…Austin has a haul coming in so he’s got his hands full…

Outside of Antonio Williams, there’s zero talent at the WR position…This has to change soon
