My spring observations

Apr 9, 2016, 10:16 PM

-The defense needs more time. They were good, but definitely could have been better. The offense will likely be one of, if not the, best in the nation, but our defensive players looked very undisciplined at times, especially in the beginning. Joseph was surprisingly good. I was impressed.
-Sheusseler looked GOOD. I wouldn't say great, but definitely better than he has looked. In a little worried that this is an indictment of the D backfield, but he made some great plays.
-Bryant isn't close to ready. He's a work in progress. He can run, but he reminded me of an unpolished Tahj. He was run first the whole time acne kept overthrowing receivers. He has room and the tools to improve, and I believe he can get there.
-Special Teams coverage was deplorable again. Add the game progressed, the players were able to tighten down, but this could be a glaring weakness again.
-Both sides of the line looked very good. I hope to see continued improvement here and I believe it could still go up.

Am I crazy or is this how others felt?

the defense will be just fine, there were great individual plays from the soon to be starters at corner and our front 7 was sort of limited in what they could do in there. It was pretty impressive to see them split in half and still dominate on both squads. Linebackers looked solid with some flashes of stardom from Lamar. I think we will actually be a lot better at linebacker this year, but there is definitely some concern at safety. I did not see anything from them today that stood out. It is an average group at best.

Olines looked more than solid and should pick up where they left off. Once again, keeping Watson healthy is the key to our season. I definitely see us as run first with the ability to take the lid off when needed. Gallman will put up monster numbers again.

Do you think Wiggins will be able to help us out at Safety? I like Jadar and Van, but there will definitely be some opportunities for teams to attack us vertically... if they have time to throw the ball.

without a doubt, but we are a couple injuries away from serious issues. I am not sold on van, he whiffed on a couple of tackles today and size is an issue. We absolutely have to move some bodies around IMHO, but then again I do not get paid the big bucks. I know the staff had know way to predict the defections, but look through the last few recruiting classes and it should come as not surprise as to how we ended up here. Fortunately our front 7 looks as good as ever. i was very impressed with the ends today, no worries there.

Wish I could have been able to make the trip to the valley and see it myself. I agree. We are very thin. Not sure what the answer is at safety... or if there really is one for the upcoming season. Glad we look deep and talented everywhere else. Thanks for your insights.

the biggest take away is this will be a record setting offense, and the Dline is scary good. Lamar and Dextar Lawrence were home runs.

What did you think about Shaq Smith, Chad Smith, and Muse? Sorry to ask for a bunch of analysis. Just haven't heard much about these guys and would really love to be close enough to check things out on my own. Anyway, if you have a few minutes, what did you think of these fellas today?

i would have to watch again, all three look the part. they all made plays. lamar was a heat seeking missle but looked lost in space. he is what venables would call "nosy" Physically smith reminds me of stephone anthony.

Coaches called plays to test on both sides of the ball and for the most part i am pleased with what i saw. Line of scrimmage was great on both sides, and wayne is for real! Nick is definetly the # 2 guy but if 4 goes down, so does the chance for a natty. Choice is by far the next guy behind wayne and isreal can sling the football, his size is a problem with three tipped passes. But if trevion could catch two easy passes he could have been the hero. Boulware still gets lost and overshoots on running plays but we have quality depth at lb again. Shaq, lamar, and chad will be good ones. Wiggins is small for safety but he plays big and will more than hold his on when he comes back. Denzel looked more comfortable than the others at safety and he seemed to have to a good feel of it. Jadar scares me as he looks lost alot. Muse seems like a good fit physically but looks lost as well. Special teams looked the same, no one gets off blocks and bad angles. I am not sure what they are coaching them to do, but everyone runs straight to a blocker instead of evading and going to the ball. I think its a coaching issue myself. I rewatched it when i get home and the coverage team is not filling the lanes, and our only kicker does not need to be taking those hits.
Add mike and deon to offense and lookout! Baylor may be the only team that can keep up. There was a few plays that need to be ripped out of the playbook and every time we got in the red zone we ran the same plays, need some creativity. Our depth in d is much better and our line should take some heat off of the dbs, i hope. Joseph and smith will fill goodsons shoes nicely. Coach V will have them ready!

I think your close. I thought nick looked exceptionally good and I don't think the secondary made him look that way. He was putting balls in some tight places. Kelly likes to run and they would have had to do more than touch him today he would have made some pretty good gains with his feet.

I think all in all we gonna be pretty darn good

Just like there. I left it misspelled because my phone decided by "love" I clearly meant "line."
